The Things We Do for Love | [Kristin Hannah]

The Things We Do for Love

The youngest of three daughters, Angela DeSaria Malone was always "the princess" of the family, a girl who thought she knew how her life would unfold. High School. College. Marriage. Motherhood. That was how it had gone for her sisters, her cousins, her friends. But it didn't work out that way for Angie. She and her husband tried desperately to have a child; year after year, their perfectly decorated nursery remained empty. Finally, their marriage collapsed under the weight of lost dreams.

Publisher's Summary

The youngest of three daughters, Angela DeSaria Malone was always "the princess" of the family, a girl who thought she knew how her life would unfold. High School. College. Marriage. Motherhood. That was how it had gone for her sisters, her cousins, her friends. But it didn't work out that way for Angie. She and her husband tried desperately to have a child; year after year, their perfectly decorated nursery remained empty. Finally, their marriage collapsed under the weight of lost dreams.

After the divorce, Angie moved back to her hometown and rejoined her loud, loving, slightly crazy family. In West End, a place where life rises and falls in time with the tides, she will find the man who once again will open her heart to love . . . and meet the girl who will change Angie's life.

Lauren Ribido lives in a rundown apartment in a bad part of town with a mother who cares more about her next drink than about her daughter. At 17, Lauren knows that her aspirations in life may never come to pass.

From the moment they meet, Angie sees something special in Lauren. They form a quick connection, this woman who is desperate for a daughter and the girl who has never known a mother's love. When Lauren is abandoned by her mother, Angie doesn't hesitate to offer the girl a place to stay.

But nothing could have prepared Angie for the far-reaching repercussions of this act of kindness. In a dramatic turn of events, she and Lauren will be tested in a way that mothers and daughters seldom are. Together they will embark on an intensely moving, deeply emotional journey to the very heart of what it means to be a family.

"Listen with a box of tissues"

I have over 250 downloads in my Library and this is by far the best one. Able voice performer Susan Ericksen delivers a fine performance as she articulates the hopes and dreams of two women, one a 38-year-old who appears to have lost everything, the other a young unwed mother-to-be who never had anything.
I could not put this audiobook down. The characters felt so real. The story line was believable and interesting. I don't know how the author did it, but I felt the pain of Angie & Lauren, could smell the food of the restaraunt, very heartfelt and touching. All around well-developed characters. Sometimes decisions we make are out of emotion and not necessarily the right thing. This book shows the realistic side of emotions and bad choices we might make. So many facets to this story. It's not your typical book that you can guess how it ends! Just make sure you listen with a box of tissues.

    "Good story...predictable ending"
    Any additional comments?

Enjoyed the story very much....no complaints at all. I am usually bad at predicting how things will end, but was able to figure this one out midway through. However, it did not change my enjoyment of the story.

    "Emotionally stirring but quite predictable"

I love Kristin Hannah's writing style, and the combination of that and the good narration kept me going in this book. There were a lot of genuine emotions in it that I could relate to and I cried a couple of times. However, I could sooooooooo predict the way the story was going, and some parts dragged on forever, to the extent of being repetitive. Still worth reading if you like a book that will make you sad then lift you up gradually! And again, writing style and narration were great

    "Disappointed In This Book's Ending!"

Great story, great characters, great narration..,horrible ending. I felt let down at the completion of the audiobook. Not Audibles fault, however what was the author thinking of? After listening to fourteen hours I expected more substance from the ending...much too shallow for me!

Hallmark movie in book form. The story line was predictable, with a few twists. Definitely need tissues at the end.

"2nd Greatest Kristin Hannah book so far..."
Would you consider the audio edition of The Things We Do for Love to be better than the print version?

No, Susan Ericksen is my favorite audiio book performer.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was Angie because she seemed the most like me. She was loving and caring but, a little neurotic too.

What about Susan Ericksen’s performance did you like?

She is just an amazing reader. She has a way of changing her voice just a little between characters so you can tell the difference.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely but, it was too long for that. Perfect!!

    Any additional comments?

I disagree with the other reviews that said that the book was predictable. I found surprises around every corner in this book.

    "Wonderful!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Oh Yes! The story goes through so many emotions and ends the way I expected, but it is a truly wonderful book. A true love story, family love story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

My favorite part was when the husband comes back and how he embraces Lauren.

    "Wonderful Feel Good Story"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would absolutely recommend this to a friend. It is a great feel good read that keeps the reader captivated throughout. It is a beautiful story about the meaning of love and family.

Who was your favorite character and why?

That is hard to answer because there were so many characters that I related to and each had their own very valuable place in the story. I could understand the intent and motivation of each character with each decision whether I agreed with the decision or not.

Which character – as performed by Susan Ericksen – was your favorite?

The performance was fantastic and I think she did a wonderful job of expressive reading, differentiating each character beautifully.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, sometimes things happen in books that leave me captivated and wanting to read more, but also needing to digest and process the information. There were times when I wanted to walk away and process the events.

    Any additional comments?

This was one of those books I was sad when it ended. I felt so intertwined with the characters that it felt like I was walking away from friends. The main character Angie was on a journey parallel to other characters but it was exciting to see her through that.
