I am a Special Education teacher. I grew up in Ashland, Oregon, but have lived most of my life in Hawaii. My favorite reading/listening genres are history and historical fiction.
I loved The House on Tradd Street and The Girl on Legare Street, but I believe The Strangers on Montagu Street is my favorite of the three in this series. I listened to the entire book in just a little over 24 hours - and it's not like I didn't have anything else to do! I admit to being somewhat surprised by how much I enjoy this series. I usually listen to history, or historical fiction. I am a West coast person who has never even visited Charleston. But when I listen to Aimee Bruneau's excellent narration I can feel the sunlight, smell the flowers, and picture the neighborhoods so clearly. I felt a little sad as this book neared the end because I doubted there would be a 4th installment - but I was thrilled to hear "to be continued" at the closing.
If you like a touch of the paranormal that isn't so scary that it will make you hide under the covers at night, this series is just right. There is romance, but it's not overwhelming. Brava Ms. White!
I would listen to this whole series again, and especially this book! I can listen to Aimee Bruneau read in her melodic Southern voice for hours. The story itself is intricate and merits the extra attention of another read.
Karen White does such a great job in painting a creepy picture. The description of the Montagu house and the ghost in the turret will stick with me for a long time.
My favorite scene was right after Nola's meltdown, when Melany was trying to comfort the poor girl and Jack sat in the other room listening. It was so sweet and heartfelt.
Yes. I found myself doing extra dishes and folding extra laundry to give me an excuse to keep the earbuds in my ears!
The third book ends with a big question mark! I will be waiting anxiously for book four!
This is the third in Karen Whites "House on a street" series. All are equally good, easy to listen to, not difficult to get in to.
A big part of the story is the renovation process of historical houses, very interesting. I very much enjoyed the ghost story aspect, and of course, there is a romantic thread throughout. All in all difficult to pick out a "best" bit, however, I did really love that I found it interesting
I can't recall reading anything that might compare, in storyline or setting.
Except maybe it compares to a few books where the female main character behaves in a predictably annoying manner, making silly choices that lead to the duly foreseeable trouble or misunderstanding, no, didn't like that aspect
Incomparable, could listen to her reading the Financial Times.
Lovely voice, each characters voice and manner pleasingly conveyed
Yes it was
Mystery, suspense, humour, nothing too heavy or distressing? I do so hope there will be further books featuring Melanie and the Houses
History, mystery, modern day life with humor all in one! I love that this book is part of a series.
Excellent narrator! I search to find the books that she narrates and download them.
This is my first read of Karen White. I enjoyed this book so much I want to go back and read the two books that precede in this series.
I love a good book, but never have time to sit and read. Audible is wonderful for people like me. Even though my kids think I am a nerd for always having my headphones on, someday they will wish their college books were on audible!
I liked this book so much, I have the others ones Karen White has written on my list to purchase.
Happiness is a good book!
Great ghost story, one in a series. It has great continuity & wonderful characters. Somewhere in the book the writer kinda lost the original characters individuality, not a lot but enough to make me go hmmmm. But still a great book.
I enjoyed the first 2 books of Karen White's. This was like the next installment of mystery and ghosts.
The first 2 books she wrote
The use of many voices. All were very distinctive and I thought fit the characters..
Occasionally I like stories that are different, this one has the slant of seeing ghosts, Even though a lot of the story was predictable, it held my interest. It was a fast read type book
Thought the story was good and the acting very good. Suspenseful and rewarding. Would recommend fully. Can't wait to read the next one in the series.
Listen on people!
Have started Part 2 now. If I do not put in my 2 cents, before the end of the book...I will go on to the next book and forget it. So, I felt compelled to say right now, that I really like this book! Storyline is good and has kept me very interested.
Try it, you'll like it.
