Publisher's Summary

Dear Listener, Douglas Sherbrooke, Earl of Northcliffe, is a man besieged. He must have an heir. Thus he must first provide himself with the requisite bride. Alexandra Chambers, youngest daughter of the Duke of Beresford, has loved Douglas Sherbrooke since she was 15. Unfortunately, it is her sister, the incomparable Melissande, he wishes to wed. But life never ladles out what one expects, and Douglas finds himself wed to the wrong sister. If having an unwanted wife isn't enough, he is also plagued by The Virgin Bride, a ghost that is reputedly seen in the countess's bedchamber. Does the willowy phantom really appear to Douglas? Does she speak to him? I hope you enjoy listening to the exploits of Alexandra and Douglas as much as I enjoyed writing about them. You will see them again in The Hellion Bride. --Catherine Coulter

What the Critics Say

"Anne Flosnik seems to have a wonderful time with this romance, reading in staid, unemotional tones that fit Douglas's attitude about marriage. As hot-blooded Alex discovers lust that quickly turns to love, Flosnik's reading engages the listener right though to the luscious conclusion." (AudioFile)

    "Slow Moving"
What disappointed you about The Sherbrooke Bride?

I felt the story was extremely slow moving. I had not problem pausing this audio book and coming back to it a few days later.

What was most disappointing about Catherine Coulter’s story?

Personally I did not care the way the author portrayed the role of women. Even though Alexandra has occasional boughs of assertiveness they few and far between. Additionally I didn't care for the way the hero, Douglass, was portrayed either. I felt it was a little over the top on domineering. Last comment, for me the book contained too many sexual scenes.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Anne Flosnik?

    Anne's performance was fine.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment definitely.

    Any additional comments?

I listened to book 1 and 2 of this series and I'm done! I'll try a modern romance from Catherine Coulter before I give up on her completely.

    Story
"Misogynists & superficial-ism tucked in story"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes, many things. First I don't care the time period, I don't believe in anytime and any class it would be accepted on repeated occurrences for a group of six or more people to berate one sister in reference to another sister's beauty over and over. I found it offensive to the story. Once the character accepts and grows to admire and want to keep the woman as his wife, I find it hard to believe for a very long time period for him to repeatedly be so cruel towards her appearance when he obviously is fond of her. Also, he repeatedly talks of her sisters beauty even after he is committed to his wife. The most effective, admirable and interesting character was Sinjin, the little sister of the offensive brute.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was good. I was surprised I stuck with it after there were so many disturbing aspects to the story. I suppose the constant disturbing parts were for psychological effect or something.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

It was adequate. I do think that other narrators could do it better. To qualify that statement, I am picky about narrators and feel some are good at some types of stories, accents and gender differences. I have favorites I buy books because they are masters of narration.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No. I have read and listened to various very offensive topics and material however, the degradation by family, friends and strangers of the main character was not necessary to the story. The message she is not as pretty as her sister and other pretty girls was beat into the ground.

    Any additional comments?

I did finish the book. The ending was charming but......... I bought the second book before I listened to this one. So I will try it. On a separate note the main characters are developed. Some of the more complex points of the story are quickly skipped over. I did really like her book, Split Second and a couple others. Maybe mass producing effects the short comings of some of her books....
This is the longest review I have done, possibly because I hope the author will read it.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Sherbrooke Bride to be better than the print version?

Not sure - didn't read the printed version

What other book might you compare The Sherbrooke Bride to and why?

I think they all are the same somewhat - but this was an entertaining story.

What about Anne Flosnik’s performance did you like?

It took some time to get used to her male voice - I wasn't to happy about those but otherwise I love the performance.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes.

What made the experience of listening to The Sherbrooke Bride the most enjoyable?

Watching Doug change the way he feels about Alexandria.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Alex of course, so hidden by her sisters beauty.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The beginning was hard to get interested in, but as the story goes along I have grown quite interested and find it hard to stop listening.

    "Coma inducing"

I firmly believe books like this are why there are "do not resuscitate" clauses in living wills.I kept up with as long as I could and finally after several hours had to abandon ship. It might have gotten better, I can't say but after about 7 hours I wanted to kill all the characters in this book for wasting my time. If your having trouble sleeping you might want to give it a try.

    Story
"so awful , I can hardly find the words!"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The dialogue was like bullet points from a powerpoint slide deck. There were silly lines and sometimes the characters said things so out of context that I was confused about what was going on. I have never stopped listening to a book, but if this one does not get better I doubt I will finish as it is so boring..
Yes, I had to stop reading to write this review, I am so disappointed

What could Catherine Coulter have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I really expected a lot, as her reputation is very good and this is my first of her books. I don't think I will read another one.
The hero was so mean and nasty. After rejecting his bride, he decides to make her "blissfully happy" by accepting her. Even his mother tells her that she is not wanted by her husband and that he will never want her. I don't know how even the strongest heroine would be able to go on with this constant criticism. It's just too much....

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Not sure, as the story was boring and slow . Even the best narrator would have trouble.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I actually think the story: married to the wrong woman, but possibly turns out to be the right one is a great story line. It's just too much negativity heaped on the heroine by the hero. It makes me hate him to the point that nothing , even a good come uppance , could change my mind about the book.

    Any additional comments?

I was really looking forward to getting into the catalogue of Ms. coulter's books, as I have heard good things and read great reviews. I am very disappointed. I had"saved" her books for the last as I thought they would be some of the best..not so!

Wasn't a great book or story but good enough. The misogynist male characters were a little much but I guess that's what it was like back then.

    "Better than her latest work!"

I have read that Catherine's old work is much better than her new work. I agree . This book is better that her new ones. The story was good but the dialog was wired and silly at many occasions !!!! The narration was good . Actually the best performance I heard for Anne Flosnik so far. I liked it :)

    "Fluff"

I enjoyed this book for what it was , Fluff . I didn't expect some great novel when purchasing it . This is the kind of story you would find on the Lifetime movie channel . So if you just want some fluff romance this is the book for you . I will purchase the whole series just to past the time away in the evening while crochet ..

    "Disturbing"

I was put off by the contempt "The Hero" consistently showed for Alexandra. And the weird, controlling relationship between her sister and her sister's husband "for her own good" was really disturbing. The writing was good, but I just didn't feel comfortable with the interactions of the characters.
