The Shell Seekers, the classic novel by acclaimed writer Rosamunde Pilcher, is now available in audio. This epic romance has sold over 3.5 million copies to date; her other bestsellers include Winter Solstice, Wild Mountain Thyme, and Coming Home.
Set in London and Cornwall from World War II to present, The Shell Seekers tells the story of the Keeling family, and of the passions and heartbreak that have held them together for three generations. The family centers around Penelope, and it is her love, courage, and sense of values that determine the course of all their lives.
Deftly shifting back and forth in time, each chapter centers on one of the principal players in the family's history. The unifying thread is an oil painting entitled "The Shell Seekers", done by Penelope's father. It is this painting that symbolizes to Penelope the ties between the generations. But it is the fate of this painting that just may tear the family apart.

"The Shell Seekers is a deeply satisfying story, written with love and confidence." (Maeve Binchy, The New York Times Book Review)
This 24 hour book is a wonderful story. I would read it 2 or 3 times again.
It is my all time favorite book.
However in Canada we cannot get the unabridged version. This45 min is not worth purchasing.
This short version was well read - very good
I hope others will ask audible to try to get the entire book.
It is a family saga in Cornwall. And it is very hard to put it down.
Listening to audiobooks is a guilty pleasure. I travel a lot so listen to about four per monthly. Biographies are a favorite.
Mauve Binchey's - similar style
Wish you had the unabridged version of this as it's one of my favorites. The abridged doesn't do it justice.
An old friend.
Warm and lovely reading.
It's fantastic for what it is. Wish I could get the unabridged version. Redgrave is superb.
From the book (not audio) reviews, this is an excellent book. The 600 page book condensed to a 3 hour audio book is a total disappointment.
I think I've finally learned my lesson and will not listen to abridged books any more.
I suppose there was not enough time to really develop the characters. The family dynamic was there, but just passed over so you got the idea, but not enough to be really invested in them. I will read the book to do this author justice.
Narrator, Lynn Redgrave did a fine job.
This is an excellent book but it looses a lot in this abridged version. I goofed and ordered it not noticing it was abridged. Lynn Redgrave is excellent but the story is far more interesting than this version allows.
No. Read the unabridged printed book until the unabridged version is recorded - if ever.
I have treasured this book for years and was glad to see it at Audible. I have the worn out cassettes of this book. I would definitely recommend this book and any book that is narrated by
Lynn Redgrave. My other favorite book of Rosamunde Pilcher's is Winter Solstice. Both of these books will always top my reading list.
This was such a good book, when I read the real thing, abridged it leaves me wanting. It really lost a lot of the detail which made it a best seller. It's still a good book, but I long for the unabridged version.
Penelope, very few books are written about characters her age, its nice to see older people portrayed, very rich character.
I love that she has a British accent, since the character is English. The English do really speak English, and put words together in a way the Americans do not. Having Lynn Redgrave read the book does add something which helps, me at least, loose myself which is exactly what I want when I read or listen to a book.
Even though Penelope was the main character and my favorite. Her children, their interactions with Penelope and each other, were what made this book so different. Not withstanding the fly in the ointment. The family dynamic portrayed is remarkably realistic and yet, not run of the mill. If you don't have time for the whole meal, this is a perfectly wonderful snack.
A very nice entertaining story. Short & sweet! Leaves you wanting to know. More about this family. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
I loved the original book when I read it years ago. This abridged version was about a fourth as long as the regular book. Do not even bother with it
as usual a lovely story and a joy to listen to welll written and beautifully narratef by Lynn Redgrave
