Publisher's summary

Would you risk your life - on the love of a lifetime?

Charleston, 1799: A daughter of Southern gentility and a gifted painter, Catherine Edilean Harcourt has no lack of suitors at home in Virginia, waiting to fulfill her dream of marriage and family. But Cay’s adventurous spirit, fostered by growing up with her three brothers, is piqued while visiting her godfather in South Carolina. Bedridden with a broken leg, he asks Cay to fill in for him on an urgent task: On her way to a fancy dress ball, she must deliver a packed horse to an old friend’s son - who also happens to be an escaped convict charged with murdering his wife!

Cay agrees to the plan, which doesn’t go at all as planned...whereupon she finds herself fleeing Alexander McDowell’s captors, riding blind into the night with the fugitive Scotsman. Though she should fear him, Cay finds herself overwhelmingly attracted to Alex, and drawn into his tale of misguided justice and his innocence as they seek refuge in the steamy Florida everglades. Will trusting him be the worst mistake of her life? Or will falling in love be the salvation both of them have been looking for?

Critic reviews

"A delightful adventure romance. The setting is colorful, but the charming characters steal the book, specifically Deveraux's enchanting heroine and engaging hero. This is a tale to read for the simple joy of a well-crafted romance." ( Romance Times)

This should be book 2

I can't believe how these books are out of order. Days of gold #1 . Scent of Jasmine #2. I don't know where the 5th one falls I'm reading that now. I loved this book and the narrator was much better then Lavender morning and Scarlet nights . I wish the order was right and a good narrator read them all but this is a very good series and I recommend them highly.

Snore.

This audiobook was such a bore! The plot plodded along at the pace of a slug on a shady sidewalk. And the narrator made matters exponentially worse with a tendency to over pronounce every word. The story was so cliche and the characters so flat that it just couldn't hold my interest. I started skipping entire chapters starting with chapter two. It never got better. To sum it up - annoying, spoiled rich girl rescues convicted wife killer from hanging because her godfather asked her to, blah, blah, blah, girl and escapee go on the run, blah, blah, blah, sex, blah, blah, blah, his wife is still alive, blah, blah blah, he has to escort his wife back to where she came from to go on trial for murdering her "real" husbands relative, blah, blah, blah, the relative isn't dead after all, blah, blah, blah, her "real" husband takes her back, blah, blah, blah, the escapee goes back to annoying, rich girl who could think of no one but him for the year he was away with his wife who wasn't really his wife, blah, blah, blah, happily ever after.

This story fits well into the Edilean series.

I enjoyed the story and the characters. I was delighted when the story explained some parts of Scarlet Nights.

Fun story

Fun story taking place in the 1800s. I fell in love with all the characters The narrator is one of the best I’ve ever heard. The author got a few of the historical facts wrong but if you can put that aside, the story is very enjoyable.

Just. Loved it

Jude Deveraux always pleases! The characters are spot on, the storyline so sweet but with adventure. Family is always important as this story illustrates beautifully. One of my Deveraux favorites. Garba Zackman’s made the characters come alive. She captured them perfectly. Love her as a reader!
