For those who've read my reviews before you know I love series books that continue on with the characters from the previous books. Because this series is about a family this really adds so much depth to the stories and the characters seem more dimensional. Of course, the addition of new characters amplifies the likability of the series.
"The Longing" is about Kyle's journey and tells not only how he deals with the heartbreak from the first book but how he discovers that love can evolve despite bad circumstances. Amelia has her own set of insecurities which, when combined with Kyle's, makes this story a true to life challenge.
I find this series endearing because it's basically about a good old-fashioned family. The author writes strong rugged men who aren't perfect but are wiling to change. They don't back down when the going gets tough. It is a an emotional story filled with friendship, caring, desperation, love, hope, and trust.
Although I think these books could stand alone, I would advise reading these books in order of the series. I think the reader would lose too much character personality and the story comprehension would fall a bit flat.
If you enjoy beautifully written detailed family stories with a sweet, unforced romance....then this is for you! I recommend this series.
I can't say enough about the inspiration of how the family is really a family that stick's together.
Kyle's a little bit broken and Amelia's heartbroken and yet these two try really hard to make the best of their circumstances. She really wants to create a home and embraces his family. He knows she's been hurt and agrees to take his time getting to know her before sleeping with her. Even though they're keeping secrets, I admired their attitudes, even for that era. They're romance developed slowly and I felt like I was a part of it. It was lovely but not without issues.
There was a bit of intrigue and suspense, too, involving Amelia's father's business issues. I liked how it was seamlessly woven into the romance and the story.
I'm enjoying this series and I really liked this story. The evolution of Kyle and Amelia's relationship from friends to lovers was very nicely told, especially after having been dumped in the last book. The Grayson Brothers... diamonds in the rough, especially the audiobook experience.
Great book, but the end of Chapter 23 (in the written list on my iPod it says Chapter 24 but the narrator states that it is 23, which is something else I wish someone would fix!) is missing and it must be the part where they finally get things moving or tell each other something about their past!
Desperation, hope, trust.
Amelia grew on me as the book progressed. She found herself and learnt to stand up for herself and walk straight and tall.
Makes me laugh, makes me cry, makes me want to be brave enough to trust and love when it seems impossible.
Broken heart, broken dreams, betrayal, by an unscrupulous and dangerous rogue. At the age of 17, who can bear it and recover? The father's love for his betrayed, shamed daughter propels his submission to a role that ultimately destroys his finances, his health and his life.Ameiia picks up the pieces of her life and becomes a teacher and begins a solitary life that threatens to bury her and condemn her to loneliness, as a spinster. Her self doubt and low self esteem propels her into forcing a marriage to prevent further censure from her community.Amelia's secrets and Kyle's hidden, supposed guilt conspires to prevent them from gaining the trust and love for each other in the marriage they have contracted. So much pain and sorrow and longing for each other, drives a wedge between them and it appears that there is not much hope for a happy ending..Wendy Lindstrom is a master story teller and she winds the threads of betrayal, suspicion, passion and burgeoning trust into the fabric of a surprising ending. It was a great combination of sorrow, desperation, hope, love and eventual trust. Talented writing and a great read.
This is the story of Kyle Grayson and Amelia Drake, who have both been hurt in the past by people they loved. They are forced to marry and now they have to learn to trust each other with their secrets and their hearts.
Kyle Grayson is the middle Grayson brother who has run the family mill since his father died. He lost the woman he thought he was going to marry to his brother, so he is (understandably) very cranky and pretty cynical about love. Amelia Drake is the daughter of a mill owner and when she was young she was seduced and abandoned by a man who she thought loved her and wanted to marry her. Now she’s decided to stay a spinster school teacher because no man would want a wife who isn’t a virgin. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, Kyle and Amelia must marry and that’s where the story really takes off.
What I liked:
Kyle and Amelia are really interesting, complicated characters who both have A LOT of baggage. Kyle is not a particularly likeable character in the first book, so it was really great to see him transform over the course of the book, not just in his relationship with Amelia, but also with his brothers. I liked Amelia’s sassiness and sense of humor. This books had a lot of humor which was a pleasant surprise.
What I Also Liked:
There was a bit of a mystery in this story, which I thought added to the book and helped Kyle and Amelia build their relationship and learn to work together.
What I didn’t Like:
The hero and heroine keeping secrets from each other is not my favorite plot device. I just wanted them to talk to each other! There were so many secrets, it got a little frustrating, but even after saying all that it does make for a compelling read!
I listened to the audio version of this book and I thought the narrator did an excellent job portraying all the different characters and conveying the emotion and humor needed for this story.
If you’re looking for a well-written, compelling historical romance (when are those secrets going to come out!?!?), with complex characters with a lot of baggage but also sass and humor and occasional crankiness, then I highly recommend this story!
I was offered a copy of the audio book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
In a stroke of rotten luck, Kyle Grayson inadvertently instigated his best friends death; then unwittingly compromised Amelia, the man’s daughter, forcing him to a quick trip down to the altar. Both Kyle and Amelia are wracked with guilt over secrets neither wants to reveal, however the chemistry and attraction that both feel for another is something they are both battling for different reasons. On top of it all there is a mystery brewing at Amelia’s father’s mill that threatens both their livelihoods and their marriage should the truths be revealed. Guilt is keeping them apart, but will love and trust somehow bring them together.
*** After listening to the SHADES OF HONOR: BOOK #1 in the Grayson Brothers Series by Ms. Lindstrom, I was more than ready to discover how Kyle was going to survive after his longtime girlfriend and fiancé fell in love with and married his older brother. As an introduction to this author’s work I was enthralled with her writing, plotting and the emotional pull of her stories as she introduced the entire Grayson clan. Because of this I knew I had to discover ‘the rest of the story’.
With this second book - THE LONGING - we get to see Kyle Grayson discover more of himself, what motivates him, how he’s dealt with the betrayal he felt when his fiancé chose his brother Radford over him. It was wonderful to see Kyle finally understand what the true power of love did to one’s heart when it found the right person to share a life with. Amelia, had made mistakes, she wasn’t perfect. Her guilt would have destroyed any chance of happiness, but as she came to love Kyle for the good and honorable man he was. But as the villain in this story was about to be uncovered it was going to be more and more difficult to tell Kyle the truth of her agonizing shame.
Bottom Line: It was also totally heartwarming to finally see the no-nonsense businessman Kyle, finally learn to laugh once more and realize that life is worth living and loving once again. With exceptional writing, and a most entertaining and enjoyable performance of narration by Julia Motyka, THE LONGING will give the listener or the reader a most wonderful and enjoyable and emotional listening or reading experience. Highly recommended.
