Publisher's summary

Constance Verity has been saving the world since she was seven, and she's sick of it. She sets off on one last adventure to reset her destiny and become the one thing she's never been: ordinary.

Ever since she was granted a wish at birth by her fairy godmother, Constance Verity has become the world's great adventurer. She is a master of martial arts and a keen detective and possesses a collection of strange artifacts. Constance has spent the past 28 years saving the world, and she's tired of it. All she wants is to work in an office and date a nice, normal guy. And she's figured a way out.

The only problem is that saving the world is Constance's destiny. She's great at it, and there are forces at work to make sure she stays in the job.

Then again, it's also her destiny to have a glorious death.

Baffled by the enthusiasm

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Young readers. Not "young adult" - young.

Would you ever listen to anything by A. Lee Martinez again?

No.

Have you listened to any of Cynthia Farrell’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not. I think she is quite good... better than many on Audible... not as good as the best.

Any additional comments?

I like a light and fun read. So not faulting that, in any way. But I am baffled by the comments which caused me to buy this -- such as "fantastic ride", "masterfully", "ultimate female action comedy" and "laugh out loud". To me it seems like lightweight writing, severely lacking in substance. I can only think it is for young readers - but I don't see that stated.

another good book

I have most of A. Lee Martinez audio books. I keep a look out for any new ones. This book is good. A little more serious but humor still present. It was fun seeing a non super hero at work. I do wish a little more detail about the fairy godmother could have been given. Cynthia Farrell does a good job. She is excellent as Connie and her friend. The male voices sounded a little too much alike. These are enjoyable characters in a good story.

Not the A Lee Martinez I've come to love

I am not much of a romance listener but wanted to try the Audible Fantasy package just to see if there would be any books that I am interested in listening to on here.

I loved A Lee Martinez's other books that I've listened to that were more comedy than romance.

This one although the storyline sounded interesting, a woman on a quest to find and kill her fairy godmother, I couldn't make it past the first few chapters. The narrator reads in this breathy voice, reminds me of the old movies where the woman was trying to sound sexy and that breathy voice is annoying. And then there's too much "he was such a hunk, Constance hoped this time would be different than all the other men" seemed to be drummed into my head too much.

Maybe A Lee Martinez was parodying romance novels and I missed that part but it definitely wasn't the book for me.

Not just an adventure story—It's EVERY adventure

First off, the narrator gives a great performance, beautifully covering a wide range of characters of varying genders and species. She did an amazing job and was a sheer pleasure to listen to.

As for the novel itself, Martinez has this amazing talent at introducing the mundane into the fantastic. In this novel, he amps up the incredible by making a protagonist who has saved the world so many times that it's become a chore. Normalcy escapes her, but the extraordinary has become predictable.

It's a fun listen from start to finish, with enough character moments to keep this from becoming too silly or repetitive.

Not his best work

Book is very cliche and full of whimsy but the main character who is supposed to be amazing comes off as snarky and boring. Love his other work better.

Distracting Narration-- So So Story

It was difficult to stick with this story. I kept waiting for something more interesting/ exciting/non-cliche to happen, but it never did, and the narration didn't help! Narrator took me out of the story several times by reading lines in way seemingly unrelated to the actual words or characters, even occasionally using the wrong character voice for lines. Not sure why I listened to the whole thing . . .

Everything that made smallville and buffy annoying

Incessant whining about how interesting/awesome she is. It's lazy writing and relies on the same device for filler that Family Guy uses

So Much for a Normal Life

If you could sum up The Last Adventure of Constance Verity in three words, what would they be?

Follow the unique perspective of a charmed adventurer who just wants the madness to stop so she can become normal. Alas, the forces of the Universe (and possibly several other Universes) conspire against her. Ninjas, robots, aliens, and magic abound.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Last Adventure of Constance Verity?

I’m just glad the author made four cats the arbitrary limit of “too many.” My three cats thank you.

What about Cynthia Farrell’s performance did you like?

Her voice felt appropriate for Constance and the other characters she brought to life.

not up to his usual standards

the last two books by this author have been nowhere near as good as his previous works. Nowhere near as funny, or is interesting or entertaining. If you're a big fan, you will still get something out of this. but don't go in expecting much.
