Publisher's summary

Based on the family from the best-selling Love in a Nutshell, the story of an heiress longing to marry for love or not at all. From the New York Times best-selling writing duo Janet Evanovich and Dorien Kelly, comes the story of a young woman’s search for true love.

Caroline Maxwell would like nothing more than to join her brother, Eddie, and his friend Jack Culhane on their adventures. While Jack and Eddie are off seeing the world, buying up businesses and building wildly successful careers, Caroline's stuck at home frightening off the men her mother hopes will ask for her hand in marriage.

When her mother sets her sights on the questionable Lord Bremerton as a possible suitor, Caroline struggles with her instincts and the true nature of her heart. She longs for adventure, passion, love, and most of all...Jack Culhane, an unconventional Irish-American bachelor with new money and no title. A completely unacceptable suitor in the eyes of Caroline's mother. But Caroline's dark hair, brilliant eyes and quick wit have Jack understanding just why it is people fall in love and get married.

Set in New York City in 1894, The Husband List is an American gilded-age romantic mystery. It evokes memories of the lavish lifestyles and social expectations of the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers - a time when new money from the Americas married Old World social prestige and privilege. Dresses by Worth, transcontinental ocean voyages, lavish parties, a little intrigue, and a lot of romance await in The Husband List.

So disappointed

I am speechless. I have always enjoyed Janet's books, even the somewhat bizarre "Wicked" series. But this one seems to be so contrived. The plot is unoriginal, the narration is poor, Lorelei King even makes a mistake, says "what--oh" and then reads it right. I have never heard that in an audio book before. I just didn't like anything about this book. But in order to be fair, I listened to the whole thing. It took me two tries to get it done.

Such a good book to take me away from reality.

Wasn't for me

Any additional comments?

It could have been me - not my kind of book. I should have known better.

I was expecting a Evanovich book to have several sub plots to go with a main story - quirky characters maybe some fun historical humor. Sure, it's a historical romance novel, but from these two authors? I was expecting a new kind of historical romance.

How does one...no two... make a romance novel this is so so so MEH...let alone PG rated?

This book had ONE thin storyline that contained little adventure. For me it was not engaging, or spellbinding. The characters had no chemistry or appeal for me either.

One issue that was ever so annoying or was it ever so humorous… whatever it was, it was distracting. One of the main character's name is Jack, who apparently is a very inquisitive character for the phrase 'Jack asked' was used often throughout. Jack should have inquired, requested, grilled, or challenged for when 'Jack asked' is verbalized on Audiobooks it comes out as a malediction. So the reader is listening along to the flowers and butterflies of this ho hum romance novel and out of nowhere - DAMNATION. It was distracting and Yeah, that part was humorous.

Another Book for Evanovich's List

Any Janet Evanovich fan will read this. While Evanovich's romances are rarely as excellent as Stephanie's adventures, we fans will read it and enjoy it. I must admit I was surprised that it was a historical romance. The narrator was super as usual.

As subtle as a battleship in dry dock

I only finished it to see if the uninspiring storyline could be redeemed at the very end. Didn't happen.

Not The Best

Would you try another book from Janet Evanovich and Dorien Kelly and/or Lorelei King?

Not my favorite book. It is written as an historical piece. I like the characters, but it was a little too old fashioned for me. If you like that kind of thing, it is OK. Lorelei King is good as usual, there was one part in the narraration where she messed up, caught herself and reread the line, this was not caught in the editing room??

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Present day

What three words best describe Lorelei King’s performance?

Always good performance

Could you see The Husband List being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

no

Novel? Or tobacco advertisement????

If there were any more cigar and tobacco usage referrals, I would believe this was written by Philip Morris! Pathetic. The characters must have all died of cancer or heart disease!😳
