Publisher's Summary

The grandson of a Scottish clan laird, Duncan MacTavish is shocked to learn that his other grandfather was an English marquis whose title and London estate he is now required to take on. Worse still, he is engaged to a stranger who has mocked him in public. But his bride-to-be, Ophelia, has been guiding a lovely and witty, if dreadfully inexperienced, country girl named Sabrina through the latter's all-important first coming-out season.

The enchanting Sabrina enthralls Duncan much more than his own intended does, and she shares his passionate feelings as well. But duty and circumstance - plus a scandal in Sabrina's family past - have made it impossible for her and the dashing highlander to be together...unless true love can somehow, miraculously, find a way.

"Don't Waste Your Credits on This One"

The reading of this book is so gastly, especially when the reader tries to do a Scottish accent, that I felt that my cringe might just become permanent. As with the last reviewer I found this book so bad that I too (with almost 200 books in my library) find myself writing my first review.

    "Weak Premise for Scandal"

I am a great fan of period romance and I know to expect certain tenets, e.g. a heroine who is unaware of her own beauty or natural assets, a man who is roguishly handsome (and inevitability taller than most, if not all, other men in any given room at any given time), and some sort of predicament that may hinder their chance at happily ever after. So, when the predicament in the “Heir” revealed itself I was entirely disappointed.

    (Spoiler Alert!!)

The female protagonist has sex with the male protagonist, but he cannot marry her because he has to marry a female antagonist to avert the inevitable scandal of being seen alone with her in a bedroom. Seriously? The protagonist gave her virginity to this guy, in a carriage no less, yet his honor won’t let him leave the other woman to deal with an at best questionable scandal. Mind you both were fully clothed, only one person saw them and this antagonist supposedly rules the ton with her extraordinary beauty, so even if this person revealed what they saw the antagonist could have easily weathered the storm, while the female protagonist could have suffered real scandal – not being a virgin upon marriage, possible pregnancy, etc.

Also, when the time came to correct misunderstanding, right wrongs, etc. the author added useless dialog that incited me to literally yell at my car stereo “get on with it!” I almost did not make it through this book, but my frugality would not let me waste a precious credit in vain.

"I just can't get enough of Johanna Lindsey!"

This is another wonderful book by one of my favorite romance authors. This is humorous, romantic, and a page turner. She always has to throw in a heart twist which is essential to all good romances.

Laurel Merlington is a gem as the narrator. You never have to worry about the quality of the narration when you see her name.

    "Utterly Pointless"

Such a disappointment after the Mallory series. The plot was simplistic and old hat. I thought the hero and heroine's interactions (which were few) lacked any spark. Both characters had no strength of character, polish or depth. The grandfathers machinations were foolish and the whole story seemed contrived.
I have been a member for 5 years and this audiobook was such a waste of my credits I felt obliged to write my first review!

    "I guess I've grown up..."

I have enjoyed a lot of Johanna Lindsey books through my college years and well into adulthood. This one bored me to the point where with only 30 minutes left of the book, I gave up and just deleted it. The story couldn’t hook me, and the characters were pretty thin. This will be my last romance book, heavy on the romance. Ever since I fell into the Black Dagger Brotherhood books, I just can’t enjoy all of the dry romance, sighing, tingling, heart aching so called love stories.
Love and sex is messy, the should I or shouldn’t I, wishy-washy stuff bores me. I guess I have outgrown the bodice rippers.

I'm a very simple person who love to read or listen to books. My favorite genre is Historical Romance but am willing to spread my wings and fly temporarily over to sample a little young adult adventure or suspense, but I will without fail, return to romance..

"Family need to mind their own business..."

Duncan's grandfathers, one Scottish and one English, both are meddlesome control freaks. Add the two together and what do you get? A whole lot of trouble, unwanted and unneeded. Sabrina on the other hand is dealing with a nut in the form of Ophelia Reed who is making Sabrina's first season horrible. Somehow, love, and we all know LOVE will concur control freaks and nuts, eventually find a way to bond Duncan and Sabrina together.

Would you listen to The Heir again? Why?

I first listened to this book last year and I'm now listening to it again.

What did you like best about this story?

The story was great. It was easy to see what was happening in my minds eye

What does Laural Merlington bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The accents were great. Both english and scottish, made the listen more enjoyable.

    "Just Okay"

This book is a perfect example of why I like this rating system. I usually like Johanna Lindsey. But this book is not one I would put myself through again. I don’t think the reader helped any, she seems popular, but I find her accents very bad and everyone sounds the same, even from book to book. I usually like my stories with nice happy endings where everything and everyone gets their just rewards or at least learns a lesson but it left me unsatisfied. For example, the heroin in the tale finally stands up for herself only to do something really really dumb. To which the hero does something extra stupid and then leaves the heroin in the dust taking the feelings and reputation of another woman over the woman he supposedly loves. WHAT!!! Then the story really seemed to drag when it jumped from one why-would-that-ever-happen situation to another that-is-the-dumbest-answer situation after another in an effort to explain why the characters made the pointless choices they did, but the poor effort made the book choppy. The author seemed like she was just adding things in as a filler to make the book longer. Sort of like this review. :)

    "Not my favourite"

I usually like Johanna Lindsey’s books but I struggled a bit with this one. I think my main problem was the fact that I read “The devil who tamed her” first, and so I already had most of the storyline figured out. I find I am not overly impressed with the male hero Duncan, whose behaviour seems a bit childish at times. The heroine, Sabrina, is a rather boring character in my opinion, so it is just as well that Ophelia has such a prominent place in the plot. She’s spoiled, vain and selfish but at least she’s entertaining! In fact, along with the grandfathers, she made this book just about ok. Not the author’s best work, but worth reading, if only to acquire some background information on the heroes from the next book in this series.
