Publisher's summary

Best-selling author Monica McCarty captivates millions with swashbuckling Scottish romances like The Hawk. Brilliant seafarer Erik MacSorley has never encountered a gale he couldn’t weather or a woman he couldn’t win—until he drags a wet, halfclothed “nursemaid” from the Irish Sea. But Ellie’s ordinary dress belies the truth that she’s the spirited daughter of an Irish nobleman. And her determination to resist Erik’s charms is a challenge he can’t resist.

Awesome

So despite their outward appearance of romance (shirtless men on the cover 🙄😕)..they're more akin to Outlander than you'd think..more historically accurate with a bit of that romance thrown in. About Scotland and England, picking up right after William Wallace's (Braveheart) execution. No traveling back in time for anyone, though. And so far, pretty accurate with people, places of battles, etc... Not as well done as Outlander, but awesome in its own right! Definitely not for younger readers due to some adult, sexually explicit content.

Historical Fiction with Flare!

I love Monica McCarthy. The mix of true historical facts with some minor name changes and twists, makes reading the books interesting and enjoyable. I love Scottish History especially the First War of Independence for Scotland. Robert the Bruce is a fascinating person in history and his story is one for the ages. Her introduction to a Highland Guard that acts like one of the first special forces is so entertaining. It is so believable that it makes me want to go back in time to see for myself.
Hawk is one of my favorite characters. He is so clever and snarky. I love Ellie and she is the perfect match for Hawk.

Addictive!

Excellent stories. Awesome series! I'm barely able to put them down. This one had me giggling.... GIGGLING!!! I'm not a wee lass and don't often giggle, or Ever giggle.... but Eric and Ellie are a charming pair.

The narrator is miscast

The narrator is perfect for the historical parts of the book but not the romance part. His portrayal of each character is stiff and has no emotion. It’s mechanical. He would have been better suited for documentaries.

hhmmm

A first time author for me recommended by Michele Warin. She said it was a Scottish romance novel which it was. Set in the early 1300's, the historical part was great with the Scots, Irish and English all involved. The romance part was OK, actually pretty intense at times. I didn't know what to expect but I have to admit I enjoyed it, found myself chuckling at times and will likely give the author another go. It was entertaining.

Fell in love with Hawk!

Would you listen to The Hawk again? Why?

Good narrator though sometimes I think he read a little slow. I changed the narration speed on my listening device to speed it up. I loved the characters and the historical references. I look forward to more books from the author and hopefully more in this series.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Hawk?

His loyalty and fierce nature in all aspects of his life. Fierce fighter, jester, lover, and navigator.

What does Robert McNab bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Good voice for the time of the novel.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both

Any additional comments?

I recommend it for sure. Both books in this series are excellent.

Another good highland tale

A good mix of history and romance, I enjoyed it! There is something addicting in these warrior tales, these fierce protective larger then life highlanders. I don't think I would have liked living in this time, I do enjoy the stories!
