Publisher's Summary

It is a Dark Era, one when a lusty lass will do what she must to survive. Even if it means bartering flesh for a palmful of coins.

Forced to watch her mother burn at the stake, Jessie Taskill knows the danger of the gift she inherited: a powerful magic that must stay hidden. Until one night when she's accused of witchcraft and Jessie finds herself behind prison walls, awaiting certain death with a roguish priest unlike any man of the cloth she has known.

In reality, Gregor Ramsay is as far from holy as the devil himself, but his promise of freedom in return for her services may be her salvation. Locked into a dubious agreement, Jessie resents his plan to have her seduce and ruin his lifelong enemy. But toying with Gregor's own lust for her is enjoyable, and she agrees to be his pawn while secretly intending to use him just as he is using her.

    "Highly enjoyable historical raunchy romance"

I really enjoyed this listen, it was an entertaining romance with lots of 'hot' scenes.

    Worth the credit? - Yes

I've always been a avid reader so now I'm a avid listener. I prefer the paranormal genre but I do like to switch things up. It's boring if you don't have variety. Of course I do love the romance and the hotter the better. Also, you can't beat a good thriller filled with suspense and a ending you can't even guess at until the very end.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No, it was just an average listen for me and I'd rather be wowed.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

    Not surprised.

    Any additional comments?

I'd save my credit for a better book. If your interested in this one wait until it's on sale.Just a warning, this book contains explict sexual content.

    "too repulsive to listen to."
Would you try another book from Saskia Walker and/or Helen Stern?

NEVER! It was a waste of both time and money. I never got even 30 minutes into it without having to shut it off and wash out my ears....

What could Saskia Walker have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Nothing.... I can't imagine what anyone was thinking to write, edit, publish, record or deign to sell it.

What didn’t you like about Helen Stern’s performance?

ALL OF IT! Cheesy porn or in other words the lack of decent material, is no excuse!

    Any additional comments?

If there were a category for cheesy slimy porn then this book would fit right in.I firmly believe that it takes all of us to review and like love or hate a book to keep the world an interesting place to read in. But I am truly offended by this book. I have listened to or read some awful books and can always find something good in them... something for someone to like. I am no prude, I allow for all tastes and opinions. However I have to say that I don't recall ever being as totalled appalled by anything in print as I was by this.... remembering that I bought it as a historical romance probably adds to my offence... but it wasnt listed as porn or even erotica... it was awful. I tried a half a dozen times to get past the filth and find the story hidden in it but couldnt bear to listen even long enough for that!

    "Hot...Hot...Pleasurable Read!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I fell in love with the characters. It was a simple story but it wrapped me up.

What about Helen Stern’s performance did you like?

Helen is a great narrator. She does a great job with all the female and male voices. Really brings the story to life.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book is HOT! I had an extreme reaction....

    Any additional comments?

I can't wait to read Saskia Walker's other two books about Jessie's brother and sister. There was a slow point about the second quarter of the book, but then it picked up and came through as an awesome book! This is not a complex book...maybe it isn't thought provoking...but it's perfect for someone wanting an easy romantic HOT read!

    "Lusty Fun in 1715 Scotland"

I really enjoyed the mix of sex and magic in this historical romance that occurs during the Scotish witch burnings. Gregor, our hero, wants the lands stolen from his father, but the cad who did the stealing has a lot of clout. He figures the best way to get information from the brut is to send in a spy. He see's Jessie, the Harlot of Dundee, in a cat fight at the local pub, and gets a good look at what's on offer as the two women roll around on the floor. He likes what he sees and decides she's be the perfect bait to trap his enemy. Until she's caught using magic and ends up in the Toll Booth (Jail).

What happens next is good fun, but unfortunately, it's read in a way that would be more successful if it had been softened just a little in delivery. There are a lot of rolling "Rrrrrrrrs" as Helen Stern, who otherwise has a lovely voice, chews up the Scots accent and delivers dialogue that is a little too strong and menacing from the male lead. Even during the romantic scenes, Gregor, sounds like he's reprimanding Jesse (though she doesn't seem to mind it a bit).

While my ear never really got used to the hardness of the performance, it's a good listen anyway, and as I said, the sex and magic make it a lot of fun.

Be prepared for archaic sounding dirty talk -- it's odd at first, but ultimately adds to the atmosphere.

"Great book with a memorable heroine.."
Would you listen to The Harlot again? Why?

Yes, The narration is very good and moves the story along well.

What did you like best about this story?

The main character Jessie's spirit and how she learns to trust and love.

What about Helen Stern’s performance did you like?

    Excellent narrator with believeable voices.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I really liked it and I think Ms Walker may change the way people think about erotic romances. The books is sophisicated, sensual, have magical nuances and shows how love can transform a person.

    Any additional comments?

Jessie and Gregor's bargin is based on revenge but soon you realize these two are made for each other. Each learns to trust each other and finds a kindred spirit in the other.
