"Trudy, Jade, Roberta, and Shannelle are women whom readers will recognize, respect, and revere." (Booklist)
"Her characters are warmly drawn and sympathetic, their problems real and believable." (Publishers Weekly)
I did enjoy this book, very well-written, even if it seems to make the case for finding the right man as a solution to life's problems, situations and inner challenges and every "page" seems to feature a sexual encounter of one kind or another.
The characters seem to get a "pass" as they seamlessly float through their issues, and there are very few negative or sarcastic thoughts in any of their minds. I am currently reading a book in which all the characters seem to harbor deeply negative, and at times hilarious, thoughts, occasionally giving voice to them, and that seems more realistic to me. Perhaps this is influencing my judgment.
I did not take any pleasure in the frequent epigraphs, thought they were too long, too intrusive and too irrelevant. I wanted to yell at the writer "okay that's enough, get going, already!"
It's a good read for simple escape, but it paints an ideal world filled with only with the most benign of characters. The fact that one character was going to cancel her vacation to Spain so that she could stay home and work on her failed marriage seems to me to be an inappropriate set of priorities. This novel is placed in the "Romance" category so perhaps I should have borne that in mind when I purchased the book.
