Publisher's summary

Forced to wed to keep her inheritance, independent Lady Jocelyn Kendal finds an outrageous solution: she proposes marriage to Major David Lancaster, an officer dying from his Waterloo wounds. In return for making her his wife, she will provide for his governess sister. But after the bargain is struck and the marriage is made, the major makes a shocking, miraculous recovery. Though they agree to an annulment, such matters take time...time enough for David to realize he is irrevocably in love with his wife. Haunted by her past, Jocelyn refuses to trust the desire David ignites in her. She never counted on a real husband, least of all one who would entice her to be a real wife. But some bargains are made to be broken - and his skilled courtship is impossible to resist....

What do you do if what you planned can't come thru

Wanting a coolly logical marriage, a husband of unshakable predicability but with birth and wealth, she aimed for a duke who was both young and handsome.

But he'll only look at experienced women for his relationships. Widows, or wives who stray.

Waterloo is only a few months back. So, what if a dying man would wed her? Soon she'd be truly a widow!

But -- what if then, against all predictions, -- he DOESN'T die?

Not much going on here

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

More plot, more action

What could Mary Jo Putney have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Something more than two people falling in love needs to happen.

Have you listened to any of Emma Newman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not but the narration was good -not at all the problem.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Boredom and frustration.

Any additional comments?

If all you need from a romance is two people falling in love, you will enjoy this book. If you need action, surprises, originality, this is not the story for you.

Ugh really??

Ughhh.....I finished it, it was very hard to finish, had to speed up audio 2-3x to get through it. The premise was interesting, kept hoping for it to get better but too much insta love by the hero and the heroine was insufferable pining for an affair with a rake she hoped to convince to marry. Very disappointed and I have learned NOT to bother reading any book marked "subtle" steam from the AAR top romance list! I really need to learn how to DNF a book!
