Publisher's summary

Nine years ago, Richard Allen fled England when his avaricious father, the Earl of Manford, betrothed him to Julia Miller, the young daughter of London’s wealthiest merchant. Having seen how his father’s ambition ruined his older brother’s prospects for happiness with an arranged marriage, free-spirited Richard takes to the sea, determined to live his own life. In the Caribbean, he joins a band of treasure-hunting pirates and adopts the persona of a Frenchman named Jean Paul. When he dares to slip back into England to carry out an urgent task for his captain, Richard falls in love with a married woman, Georgina Malory.

Despite Georgina’s indifference to him and her husband James Malory’s threats to harm him, Richard is smitten. His next attempt to woo Georgina at a masked ball turns out to be a terrible mistake, because it brings him face to face with another beautiful woman.

Grown-up and sophisticated, Julia Miller, a friend of Georgina’s, is charmed by the masked Frenchman Jean Paul until she discovers he’s really her detested fiancé! Julia has hired solicitors to have Richard declared dead so she can free herself from their betrothal and move on with her life.

But when the Earl of Manford learns his son has returned and can fulfill the marriage contract, he sets in motion a chain of events that places Julia on the high seas with her fiancé - who is not merely an irresponsible nobleman but a seductive, adventure-loving pirate!

The saga continues: listen to more romatic tales of the Malory family.

Great first summer read !

This book I was unsure about, Yet i knew that I love the others in the series so i took the gamble that this would be as good as i was hoping, IT did not disappoint me at all..
I found the story line different, 1- being for the arranged marriage that had to do with money only 2- the controlling parents. 3- The 17 year old son running away to find a life away from the controlling parent: 4- the understanding what love verses infatuation is 5- how they overcome for a happy ending..
This was one of those romances where the two main characters hate each other all growing up and how they overcome there circumstances. IT is a great summer read.. I hope that you like it as much as I did.

Ok Beach listening

I really used to love the Malory series as I first started to read regency romance waaaay back when. Lately, I sort of outgrew them. Although not in the same league as "Gentle Rougue", I found this book charming light read. Maybe because I wasn't expecting much or that I like the supporting casts especially Richard's best friend. If you are not familiar with the Malory's you might find yourself lost or loose interest. I suggest you start with "Love Only Once," "Tender Rebel," and "Gentle Rogue."

I wish I could give it 3.5 stars

Not bad. I like Johanna Lindsay, I've read a bunch of her others that are better but this is still a decent story.

Forever love Johanna Lindsay

Since I was a young teenager my mother always read me books written by Johanna Lindsey, leaving out the scandalous parts. I have always been won over by her witty humor and her ability to build characters. I especially love the series that she does like the Reid family and the Malory-Anderson family series. she is truly inspiring and soba tea. I have never listened to a book of hers that I have not loved.

The purest Johanna Lidsey style

It is one of the best Johanna Lindsey's books, as most of the Mallory's saga.

How can you miss with the Mallory's!!

As ususl the Mallory saga is funny and entertaining. Can't wait to see who she chooses next. I hope she makes it to James's children. He will be very interesting with them. "The Brick Wall" is my favorite of them all.

A couple of twists I did not expect.

Nice read like her previous ones and good to finally know Richards back story. Like the tie in to the Mallorys

The Mallory’s continue to entertain!

I like the continued saga of the Mallory family and their friends! The mix of expectations for the upper crust with those unexpected interactions and relationships with other intricate less fortunate. The story finds a way to show that there’s a place for love though different ideas about status in life exist and that self preservation can provide opportunities.
