Talking About Sex

It's Katie Peterson's job to be a mouthy DJ, but being mouthy just got personal. Jess Harkins has started construction on a 60-story office tower next to Katie's quaint local radio station. She'd hate his building anyway: Who needs another high-rise? But Katie especially dislikes having her view blocked by the guy who turned down the chance to be her "first". So it's time for a little payback.

Jess always got a laugh at Katie's irreverent on-air comments. He'd even thought of asking her out for old time's sake. But now Katie's barbs are directed at him, implying that any man driven to build a structure this high is obviously compensating for something. Jess has only one thing to say to Katie, and it isn't something he can just phone in. It's time to turn the radio off and turn Katie on!

    "Very good book."

It is a good book. More like erotica then romance. Don't listen to it at work unless you have headphones.

    "Problem with male reader"

Fine story, fine narration EXCEPT -- both narrators has a SERIOUS problem with secondary character voices -- they makes them sound like children, or super-squeaky, or constipated. LAME. Why didn't the production team correct this problem before publishing? (to be fair this is a common problem with narrators -- especially when reading characters not of their own gender -- but it is MOST annoying!!!! -- The narrators should just read the story, NOT over-act

    "The Title Fits"

This book was enjoyable and definitely talked alot about 'sex'. I liked the story, although it was predictable. I would have preferred one narrarator vs. duel. Stil, great escape.

    "HOT!"

Great, hot story. The duel narrators didn't work when he was reading and doing her voice and vice versa. She did a poor male voice. He did better. They should have had the duel voices but having them each reading together- you can tell they didn't record their parts together- that would have been better.

    "Awful. awful, awful"

I cannot think of many other books I have read in my lifetime that were even close to being as tedious or as trite as this one. The storyline and all of the characters, including their personalities, backgrounds and motivations have been done to death. I only made it though the first 1 1/2 chapters before I had to admit that I couldn't take it anymore. It was time to listen to a good writer and wash the taste of this one out of my mouth.

I cannot believe that I actually paid good money for this uninspired, boring collection of words.

    "Disappointed"

Didn't even listen to the whole thing because the back and forth between and male and female readers, each doing multiple voices including each others, was so distracting and poorly done. Especially didn't like the woman's voice when she was trying to sound like different women's characters. The effect of one was like listening to an absurd cartoon character, which was both annoying and distracting from the story line. The premise of the story could have been interesting, but the voices lost me too early to ever know.

    Story
    "Fun listen"
If you could sum up Talking About Sex in three words, what would they be?

    funny, sassy, true

What did you like best about this story?

She manages the conflict between being a proud and independent personality and the vulneriblity of falling in love well.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The first time the hero and heroine are in her home alone together - her "bad girl" is a very fun, powerful bad girl. :)

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I always laugh with VLT's novels, and she usually manage to jerk a few tears out of me, too, as she writes such interesting and likable characters and manages to keep the suspension of disbelief going even with some of the most extreme conflicts. This one was no different.

    Any additional comments?

I enjoy VLT's novels largely because she writes good humor with distinct yet identifiable characters.

    Story
"Want a Good Listen? This is One!"
Would you listen to Talking About Sex again? Why?

I have to say after reading the Nerd Series, Hex, and Babes on a Broom... trying to keep up with the Nerd Series feel... I didn't think this would come close to the greatness I found in those series. Trying to capture an independent woman who was still somewhat of a nerd and the utterly known nerdiness of a man who was smart, virile, and witty this book... was on point!

I have to give it to Vicki Lewis Thompson... she knows her stuff. She hasn't upset me yet. The narration was dynamic in my thinking. Even though some may not like to hear different chapters read by men with both voices for male and female being utilized by whomever read the chapter... be it male or female... I have to say I thought it was ingenious.

You get two perspectives and feelings from the two people. If you really are drawn into the story you have your own imagination, your own ability to see through the narrators straight to the thickening lines and their meanings.

Don't get stuck on superficial things and try to find something wrong with this story. Just listen and let yourself be engrossed with a story that is easy to listen to and very much making a complicated situation be less and less complicated with the assistance of some screws, bolts, hammers, and maybe even a little horizontal and vertical mambo!

Will definitely listen to this again in the future! Also this was the first audio book I have heard of this author's books. Great job!!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hum... don't think there was one favorite... maybe two- Jess and Katie.

What does Doug Bellitto and Annie Silver bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

You wouldn't get to see the writer's meaning in each and every sentence if not for the emphasis of the moods you could hear in Doug and Annie's rise and fall of their voices. They were able to clearly articulate what each lover had in mind. Sometimes you can't quite catch the mood of the person speaking because you put the phrase in your own line of thinking or based on your experience with the words. Annie and Doug were able to portray a clear and enjoyable listen that makes you sit on your sit if you are a person that likes a good story!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Nuts, Screws Bolts, and a Little Horizontal Mambo!

    Any additional comments?

Have to say there were some tough reviews and wasn't so sure about getting this audio book because of them. I can see that if you are more interested in hearing a woman's voice when a woman's part is being narrated and a male's voice when a male's portion of the story comes around you might be disappointed, but why not have any expectations and let things take their course and see what happens? This to me was a great way of narrating the book. I had no expectations!
