Publisher's summary

When newswoman Britt Shelley wakes up in bed with the handsome and hard-partying Jay Burgess, a rising star detective in the Charleston PD, she remembers nothing of how she got there...or of how Jay wound up dead.

Five years earlier, Jay was a hero of a disastrous fire at Charleston's police headquarters, which would have been even deadlier if not for the bravery of Jay and three other city officials who led others to safety.

Firefighter Raley Gannon, Jay's lifelong friend, had been assigned to investigate the fire, but the investigation ended in a scandal that shattered Raley's world, and forced him to surrender the woman he loved and the work to which he'd dedicated his life. For five years his resentment has festered, but he was helpless to set things right. That changes when he learns of Jay's shocking death.

As suspicion against Britt Shelley mounts, Raley realizes that the newswoman might be his only chance to get personal vindication - and justice for the seven victims of the police station fire. But there are powerful men who don't want to address unanswered questions about the fire, and will go to any lengths to protect their reputations.

As Raley and Britt discover more about what happened that fateful day, they realize that they're not only chasing after the truth but running for their lives.

Smoke Screen is Sandra Brown's most intense novel yet.

Smoke Screen

The author outdoes herself for the most part as a story. However, It takes at least 7 hours to discover the plotand wonder who is blackmailing the main character. Needs to move a little faster.

Not Disappointed!

I was hesitant at first to purchase book because of the way some people complain not Sandra Brown blah blah blah.
Well if you are an avid reader of Sandra Brown then you would not be complaining.
I very much enjoy her books and love Victor Slezak as the narrator. Once again he makes her books so darn good and the men sexy. Lol.
I did enjoy the story line. I felt it kept me wanting more. Brit is a strong successful woman who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. A Total cover up kept me intrigued as you couldn’t tell who was the big culprit to the whole mess.

The thing with Sandra Brown is you have to keep reading because she always has some kind of kick to it! Especially at the end of her books. That’s why I continue to read because I know she is going to make that big boom and your like get out of here!

This book did not disappoint me at all! I have decided from now on not to read the reviews and just purchase her books and decide for myself. I have not been disappointed yet nor I doubt I will be.

Well crafted

This is a well crafted story that moves fast. My only complaint is the narrator. Slezak has a good voice and does the secondary characters well. However the H/h both sound just alike. Several times it was hard to know which character was speaking. Dick Hill narrates other books by Brown and does such an awesome job, it makes Slezak's limitations all the more prominent

Tidy story

The story was entertaining enough, it kept me listening with interest. It all comes together nicely at the end with a surprise too! Perhaps a little too nicely though, and the gratuitous sex at the end was not really necessary.

She does it again.

A good story I had trouble putting aside. My sleep timer in the wee hours of this morning ended at the end of a chapter. My interest wouldn’t be denied. Lost sleep but I was too into it. Slezak’s story telling and voice are excellent.
