Publisher's summary

Living a successful life in Charleston, South Carolina, Kate MacKenna has always been able to turn her challenges into triumphs. But now the fates seem to be lining up against her in a lethal fashion.

While attending a reception at a friend's estate for a controversial artist, Kate is nearly killed by an explosion. Once home, Kate is hit with the news that the prosperous fragrance company she has nurtured from the ground up is in jeopardy: It turns out that her late mother used the business as collateral for a huge loan, and full payment is due in three weeks. Kate's still reeling from this devastating news when her younger sister's volatile ex-boyfriend shows up and threatens her.

Then Kate receives a call from her best friend, Jordan Buchanan, who is hospitalized and scheduled for surgery in Boston. Though stretched to the limit, Kate immediately rushes to her side. Once she knows that Jordan is going to be fine, Kate abandons her calm façade and allows herself a major meltdown, doing something that is totally uncharacteristic: She has a one-night stand with Jordan's brother Dylan.

Coming to her senses, Kate returns home determined to get back on track and save her business. But the mishaps keep coming.

At Jordan's insistence, Dylan checks up on Kate. He's convinced that she's merely having a spell of bad luck - until he discovers how many people want Kate MacKenna dead.

Great

Great re-listen. Joyce Bean did an excellent job narrating the different characters. And of course, Julie Garwood did an excellent job writing this story. I am a little surprised she didnt sum up ALL the loose ends at the end of this audio book. I'll not tell because I don't want to give anything away. Definitely worth a credit. 😊

Main Character annoyed me

Found the main character to be ridiculous, kind of stupid actually. Found her responses to events to be dumb and it frustrated me.

Enjoyed It, but why "Slow Burn" as a Title

I enjoy Romantic Suspense books with bite to them--this one was good--could have been more bite though. Narrators can make or break book. I enjoyed the narrator also, however she doesn't do "southern" very well (the reason she got a 3). I know I have listened to her before and I know she has done a better job.

I started listening to the sample story about Jordan--she seems to be more herself in this one--she will probably rate much better, at least in my opinion.

Save me from dimwits!

The eye roll with this book! Who has two near miss explosions and thinks it’s just coincidence? Who blindly trusts random men who show up or call, claiming they just want to help her? Who, despite her family desperately needing the money, turns down an 80 million dollar inheritance? Who sleeps with a guy, has him cross the country to come to her aid, and still thinks he’s just being nice? Airhead Kate, that’s who.

The mystery and romance sides are both ridiculously unbelievable. The character and plot development are also extremely shallow. There’s nothing to Kate and Dylan’s relationship other than sex (a quickie one night stand and then a series of fade to black “they slept together and it was great” scenes), him calling her Pickle, and her acting like she’s twelve.

Slow Burn? More like Fast Freeze … of my brain cells listening to this. Skip this one in a wildly inconsistent series. Try Mercy for better fun and romance, or Killjoy for more personality and mystery.

Very Disappointing

I have listen and read many Julie Garwood books and I am usually pleased with them but she not only missed the mark with book she wasn't even in the neighborhood. But much worst then the writing was the narrating of the book. Overall, the main thing I find so objectionable about the book was the protrayal of a southern lady. It was inaccurate, sickening and insulting to the true ladies of the south. It protrayed us as being more concerned with proper etiquette than with the story plot. The writing is off & appears to have been done in a hurry. But Joyce Bean's performance illustrated than in all likelihood she had never even met a person from the south nor had she ever held a conversation with them. Very disappointing book.

Wonderful Read

Julie Garwood does it again. All of her books in this series are very good, I just wish that there were more of them.
