I am an avid listener. I listen between 75-100 hours per month on my iPhone: 60% fiction to 40% non-fiction.
Bybee keeps the series new and interesting by changing up the plots in interesting ways. Unlike other series which offer cookie-cutter plots, Single by Saturday is the story of Karen who is a dedicated volunteer to help young teens. The story is about what she is willing to sacrifice for others and a message about how to stand by the people you value in life. Bybee offers example after example of strong support through Karen's actions and the actions of her friends.
This book has romance but more importantly it shows the value of great friends and family and their value. This book is light on the raw romance and more heavy on relationship aspects and the value of individuals' ethics. I give it a thumbs up and I think the series is alive and thriving.
This was not the best in the series in my opinion. It did have some issues for sure. Didn't really care for the "fake wife" falling for the brother, or the brother falling for his brother's wife, when he didn't even know it was a fake marriage. It seem to me that Zack and Karen only had some attraction towards each other and it felt fake and rushed to me. I didn't like how Karen got sooooo mad at Mike when he kissed her at the bar-b-q party. That was sort of stupid, I mean really, she did sign up to be his fake wife. Too many eye rolling moments.... that would be me rolling my eyes, like whatever, geez and seriously??
I didn't hate it but it was not great by no means. There was lots of dialogue throughout the book which was great, and there was a nicely written sex scene, so there is that. Regardless of the not so good story line the writing did flow very nicely.
As for the narration, It seems Tanya Eby has gotten better with each book! She gives everyone their own distinct voice, the men sound like men and her reading voice is very nice.
I do plan on reading\listening to the next book in the series because the rest were really good, so I am not giving up on this series.
I got this as a free listen and read with my KU subscription. Glad I didn't pay for this one, so yes a good deal.
I'm an avid reader of Romance and a true romantic at heart. I also read and review in other sub-genres as well. Happy reading!
Wow, this was such an exciting story from start to finish. Enjoyed the subplot with Michael and Ryder. Loved Meg and Val. This one has a great villain that you will love to hate. Again, fantastic narration by the talented Tanya Eby!
have really enjoyed this series Ms. Bybee is a very talented author who knows how to spin a tale as she keeps you entertained. I do have to say this isn't one of my favorites so far in this series. The author does hit on some very serious issues of teen abuse and run away. I loved the way Karen helps the young teens even at her own cost. Zach was a great character I really did like him. I honestly thought when Karen and Michael would work it out and stay married when I read the first part in the story before. The author never did tell if Michael really had a secret it was hinted at. The story is built mostly around Karen and Zach meeting falling for each other and Karen keeping Michael secret. The author does tell the story in easy following style with class.
The only issue I had with the story is some things are just a no-no and you do not do. If they had been dating etc I would have went with it but if you are married you do not hook up with your brother/sister wife/husband. Being in this spot once myself (which was a very touchy issue not saying anything but walking away with a no thank you) the word that always comes to mind is NO THANK YOU and move on. Nothing good can come out of an affair and one of this type is BAD. I did think the author carried it off nicely I just didn't care for this story line. It would have been one thing if everyone in the family new it was a fake marriage, since Zach didn't he should have made sure they were never alone. Just my two cents...
Tanya Eby did an outstanding job as narrator her words are always clean. You male and female voices are great. She hits on the correct tones and emotions that you feel you can feel them. She always gives you a wonder audio with a very clear listen, no background noise. You can not tell if or when she takes a break between chapters. You have no trouble telling who is talking and the change from male to female voices is easy and clear. I love listening to this narrators voice it is always a pleasure picking up one of her audios.
I have to say the author does change things and rock this series. The plots are different and she does keep them interesting. When you think you know what she has planned for her characters she changes it and takes it a different way. The one thing I love in this series is it is based on family and friends value. It doesn't seem so when most of these people meet through rent a marriage but each one has style and a goal. A lesson of what is important as the author gives you a very touching romance. I thought it was a good listen just wasn't my favorite, with any series you have some you do not care for as others. I am glad I listened to this it fills in some places that would be missing as the series continues. I am really looking forward to listening to the rest of this series.
This was a love triangle that boast sacrifice, friendship and unspoken love on many levels. Great addition to series. Love the continuation of characters.
Say something about yourself!
She brings the various characters to life
Great example of a series that focuses on new characters in each book while bringing in the characters of prior books.
It is difficult to know where to start this review. By far, this is the best of series and perhaps the best of Catherine Bybee's books to date. "Single By Saturday" is a complex mixture of life alternating romance, effects of intense child abuse, and intense difficulty of public figures coming to grips with divulging their sexuality. Powerful book and characters. Likewise, the narration by Tanya Eby is outstanding. I have listened to over 10 of her audiobooks, and she shows her increasing talent each time. With this narration, she moves herself into the top echelon of today's female narrators. I strongly recommend "Single by Saturday" to all listeners.
