A Marriage of Convenience

Such is the agreement forged between Lady Jessica Stanton and Simon Warland, Earl of Northcote. Jessica needs a husband strong enough to protect her inheritance from her avaricious stepbrother. Simon needs money to restore the family legacy his father squandered. United by necessity, emotional attachment isn’t part of the deal.

An Unexpected Passion

Yet once the reluctant newlyweds are living under the same roof, Simon can’t ignore the startling intellect, gentle strength, and graceful beauty Jessica keeps so carefully hidden from the world. And Jessica is intrigued to discover Simon’s formidable temper masks a kind, noble heart. But when Simon’s true motive for their marriage is revealed, Jessica is devastated by his betrayal. Because, despite her best intentions, she is falling in love with her husband. And love is the last thing either of them wants - though it may be exactly what they need.

A FAIRYTALE LOVE STORY THAT'S ENTERTAINING

I think when we listen to these FICTIONAL, historical romances there are 2 categories of listeners - 1. the listener that want's everything researched, researched, researched and then verified (absolutely nothing wrong with that if that's what you like), and 2. the listener who just want's a fanciful romance that's pure escapism and who wants just a bit of enjoyable fun to pass the time whilst doing a particularly dull chore or task. I think this is why this book is getting such varied reviews and I sadly, fall into the 2nd category - so I will give my review based on my own personal tastes.

I found this to be thoroughly enjoyable, touching, funny, sweet and romantic and it has some great characters too that you can't help but empathise with - handsome penniless Rake and a deaf rich but modest heiress. There is an evil villain who had 'allegedly' raped a servant of 13/14 and done some 'unmentionable' acts but, as with all these types of books, he gets 'dealt with'. Great narration by Ms. Landor too.

Worth a credit? If you fall in category 2 then - YES absolutely - but for $9.79 for nearly 11hrs I would just buy it, save your credit and spend it on a more expensive listen.

Loved the plot and the humour

My sister and I listened to the audible version during a long car trip. It is romance as I like it - a plot that moves along and lots of laugh-out-loud humour. I liked the audio so much that I bought it for my Kindle, and I bought the other two of her books that audible has available. I read/listen to a lot of romance books, but this one really stood out for me. I suppose it really comes down to personal preference.

THIS is a good one!

What made the experience of listening to Silent Revenge the most enjoyable?

The story itself. The characters. This one stretched the mind further then most in its genre.

What did you like best about this story?

The depth of the tale. A story that reaches into the very worst of humanity but still romps joyously thru regency era London. A gritty mystery and a nice love story. This one twists your heartstrings in a different way than most of the historical romances... There are no gritty erotic scenes... There are bone chilling suspense scenarios... I can't help but recommend this book. Three 5's from me!

What about Rosalyn Landor’s performance did you like?

As always she delivers distinct characters with the right cadence, expression and emotion! I often wonder how she does it, delivering male and female character specific voices with perfection and ease...

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The name itself says it! Hmmm... Stories of love, and of suspense, and of hidden secrets and bitter revenge... all rolled up in one.

Any additional comments?

I highly recommend. But if you like your romance with some erotica then this one's not for you. If you like your romances to be light hearted "chick flick" style then this ones not for you. However if you like a great many faceted story with fabulous narration then this IS for you!

Entertaining

Pretty interesting story. He needs money because of his wastrel father and she needs to marry because her step brother wants to put her in an institution to take it all.

The most interesting part, is that the heroine, Jessica, is deaf. I've never seen a romance novel with that element in it. I would actually have loved to have seen a little more of her backstory about this element of her life, I think it would have enriched the threat of the villain as well.

As it is, aside from that, it is a pretty standard story. We need each other, we don't know each other, oh! we love each other.

I liked reading it, the characters were pretty well drawn, the ambiance of the story was well created and I'd be interested in reading more from this author.

Not a " Carn't put down until finished"

Liked the idea of the storyline if written with more depth, not angry & suspect attitude from main male character, got a bit over the top at times, it's like yep got his issue's let's get on with story. More research necessary on the time period, some aspects in story were not of the time period, being correct in time period does add depth to the overall story, your there in it, so you wish to experience it correctly. Overall, ok, liked some aspects of story but wouldn't re-listen to it.

Dreadful!

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

You will enjoy this book if you've never read a well-writtn, well-researched period romance and you don't care about historical or linguistic accuracy.

Would you ever listen to anything by Laura Landon again?

If they're all this poorly researched and full of this many cliches, no.

Which scene was your favorite?

The whole book was so aweful that I didn't even finish it. However, this narrator is one of my favorites, and her performance here is as good as always. Too bad she didn't have much to work with.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

First of all, this author needs to do some research into the language used during the time period when the story was set. I swear the main characters said "bloody hell!" at least 5 times a chapter. Variety is the spice of life, and she could have put just a tiny bit of effort into looking up some other othes and explatives of the time.

Also, there is no way, NONE! that a completely deaf woman who had been deaf since childhood could converse with perfect diction 100% of the time. The lip reading...fine. She could have taught herself that. But--and this is not meant in any way to be dirogatory toward the fully deaf--it is simply not possible for Jessica to have had perfect diction without the intervention of any kind of teacher or language therapist.

Finally, waltzing. Based on the clothing styles referenced in the book and a comment one character made about "the American colonies", it is safe to assume that this book was set in the late 1700's. Fine. However, waltzing was not widely accepted in English high society until the early 1800's. Again, a little research would have gone a long way.

Any additional comments?

Laura Landon needs to read a Heyer. The story itself wasn't badly written, just incredibly poorly researched and lacking in credibility.

Not even a good narrator could save this one.

The repetitiveness had me skipping pages and sometimes even entire chapters. The main couple came across at best as naive and at worse, borderline moronic. The villain perpetrated violent and sadistic acts against women and innocent young girls. I bought this book because of the narrator, but I couldn't finish it. I'm glad Audible has a good return policy in place .

Revenge comes with a price..Are you will to pay?

This is the first book I've listened to by Laura Landon. I enjoyed Silent Revenge in its entirety. Once you come to the end, you realize, sometimes, it is best not to hold a grudge or get revenge upon people. It comes with a price that you might not want to pay.
It is worth the credit. I love listening to Rosalyn Landor narrations...

Nice book but not WOW

I enjoyed this book. I think what ever Rosalyn Landor narrates I'll enjoy, with her performances she improves the book.
This is my first book for this author. I liked her style of writing, simple yet a bit sparkLESS.
I miss the the spark quality that makes your heart ache that I find in Lisa Kleypas's historical romances :( I think this is the problem, that I end up comparing all the historical romances to LK.
Having said this, it's a solid book with nice story and phenomenal performance.
Enjoy it :)
