Publisher's Summary

Can a woman find two Alpha soul mates in one lifetime?

Talyn Phisher is a counselor in a world that has been turned on its ear by an unthinkable discovery: vampires roam among humans.

If all this upheaval was not enough, Talyn's body is changing. Signs that something is seriously wrong plague her. Having been told she's barren and there's no hope - Talyn still longs for a family of her own, though the stories she hears from clients tell her happiness is a long shot.

Talyn wants that shot. She yearns for a man who will put her first - for who she is.

Until a stalker's pursuit threatens everything close to Talyn's heart.

When Talyn feels her life is in imminent danger, she reaches out in desperation to the Final Enforcement, an elite, fringe group of the police who do more than take the law into their own hands.

Only to discover Talyn isn't what she thinks she is.

And neither is the one who stalks her.

Shifter is the first volume of six episodic novelettes in the Alpha Claim serial.

This book was a short story about a female hybrid human / lycan who hasn't been changed yet. First in the series, might be worth litening to more if this is your genre. I'd give it a go.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed.

    "Short intro to series"

Dr. Talyn Phisher is having a bad day. With her body feeling like it's about to implode, patients who have seriously damaged childhood, a possible gym stalker, mysterious blue eyes and not enough Ben and Jerry's, it's not looking good.

Merck is a changer, a protector. A Lycan who helps his female changes cross over, but it's the first time he has been assigned an older female to change. Even worse one who is going into heat and who he is beginning to have strong emotions about.

This part of the series served as an introduction to these characters and their world. They don't interact much until the end so we are left in the dark about their relationship if it goes to that.

The narration was unfortunately at times stilted and felt robotic especially with Talyn voice. I found that to annoy me a bit and just struggled through to the end. It was better with The male voices, but I found the overemphasizing of the genitalia in the dirty sense to be over the top and cringeworthy. The story in itself was okay and I would listen or read the next in it.

I received an audible copy of this book for my honest opinion.

    "Well-Written Shifter Serial"

Quick tip: Alpha Claim: Vampire is set in the same world and precedes this serial, Alpha Claim: Shifter. It is not necessary to have listened to that one first, though it is good, so why not enhance your experience. I like the Vampire serial, but I like this story even better. Our h is a psychiatrist who, unknowingly, is also a shifter hybrid about to change, though quite a bit later in life than what is the "norm." Her protector/changer is combating his feelings for her, and while I see where it's going, it looks like it will be a fun ride getting there.

The narrator is OK as far as her voices go and would have earned 3 stars, BUT the sheer number of mispronounced words and the many times, I had to kind of stop and replay a sentence in what I felt was "the way it SHOULD have been read" all became very distracting. If it were not for the strength of the story and writing, I would have given up. The lack of subtlety in the inflection, I can kind of get past (though, it's only a couple of hours long, so I'm thinking reading it through prior to recording wouldn't be too much to ask…), but what I really can't deal with is mispronouncing simple words, like "assess." The voices were good, and a bit of preparation, including Googling pronunciations and some editing would make a world of difference.

In spite of the many "unhelpful" votes on other reviews that are honest about the narration (tell your friends to stop--it makes YOU look bad, not the reviewer), I truly hope that this narrator will take the criticism and do a better job with the rest of this serial because Marata Eros' writing is good, her stories are interesting and they deserve a bit more attention to detail. I received this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review.

"Good start to a new series"

    BOOK REVIEW.....
I like that it's a spin off from the alpha vampires series. It's nice to get the shifters side of the finding and saving a mate thing. Though I wish that I had read all of the vampire series first before reviewing this one also. It has a spoiler for the vamp series. I liked the story so far and I look forward to continuing with the series.

    NARRATOR REVIEW.....
This narrator is awful. She does terrible voices for the characters.

    What disappointed you about Shifter?

The idea of a werewolf having to find the half-breed female werewolves was interesting, but this story fell flat. Nothing really happened. The werewolf finds the female and watches her. The end. There was all this talk of how the female lead character was getting ready to go through her transformation, she was feeling really frisky and it was the male werewolf’s job to help through the transformation. None of that even happened. Additionally, there was no backstory to how the vampires and werewolves became more acceptable to humans.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Not sure yet.

How could the performance have been better?

Again, maybe I’m just picky with the narratoring and believe it should be done in a different way? I have no clue. Either way, I wasn’t a fan of this narrator. Now I don’t know if it was the writer’s writing style or the narrators way of talking but there was a very stilted flow to the story. It’s like the narrator was just reading sentences rather than a story. (Ex: ‘She liked going to the park. He saw her there. They walked together). There was also an inflection used, in the narrator’s voice, near the end of the sentence. Sometimes the narrator would say something and it would sound like she was asking a question when in reality she was just making a statement. It was really annoying and detracted from the story’s flow as well. Prior to having to change the speed of the narrator’s voice (which I’ve never had to do before) she spoke very very very slowly. There were times when the narrator would get much closer to the microphone. This usually happened with a characters inner dialogue. Again, annoying.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. This story, even a short story, had so much potential but it just didn’t make it.
