Publisher's Summary

Dear listener,

Shades of Twilight is the story of Roanna Davenport, who grows up in a wealthy southern family but never quite fits in. She isn't pretty or popular, and she has a real talent for saying the wrong thing at precisely the wrong moment. She's in love with a distant cousin, Webb Tallant. But Webb marries their cousin Jessie, the bane of Roanna's life. When Jessie is found murdered, Webb is blamed for her death, even though there isn't enough evidence to charge him. Webb leaves town, and Roanna is left to pick up the pieces.

All of her life, Roanna has tried to win the love of her grandmother, of Webb, and of her extended family - and every time she's been slapped down. She's had enough. Roanna withdraws from the family, and that's when her grandmother, Lucinda, realizes how very important this misfit is to all of them. Lucinda tries to make amends to Roanna by setting in motion a chain of events that brings Webb back home. But the plan disturbs a killer who is set on vengeance - and this time, the whole family seems to be the target.

I hope you enjoy Shades of Twilight.

Sincerely,
Linda Howard

"One of the Two Best Linda Howard audio books."

Don't pass this up if you are a Linda Howard fan. This book and After the Night are easily my favorites.
Narration is always a joy when Natalie Ross performs.
This is a very good story. Howard at her best. I am not sure why there are negative reviews. This is undoubtedly worth the price or the credit.
    Don't pass this over!

    "Interesting ending"

This book was very different...very slow start and I almost stopped listening. If you can get past the cousins dating and the father daughter sex (very creapy) the ending was a shocker. Not until the very end do you find out who the killer was and I never would have figured it out. Can't say I would listen to it again like I have other audiobooks...this was okay.

    "Generally a good story"

I liked the story and the suspense, but could have done without the very long, explicit, sex "scenes". Story could hold its own without most of them.

    "Excellent Narration"

This is not my favorite Howard book by a long shot but Natalie Ross does an excellent job with the narration. I rate audio books on the narration not the story. Narration makes or breaks an audio book no matter how good (or bad) the story. Natalie Ross has been spot on in everything I've heard her do and it's a relief to be able to rely on her!

    "Loved this audio!!"

I love that Audible is putting Linda Howard's older books on audio. The narrator is great! Hopefully Audible will put Kill and Tell on audio.
    Thanks Audible!!

    "Creepy"

Could not get past the father-daughter sex scene. It was too creepy. Will not purchase another novel by Linda Howard.

    "WAY too much inner-dialogue"

Seventy-five percent of this story was the hero and heroine's REPETITIVE inner-dialogues. Say it once and move on...please! The two may have been "kissing-cousins," but they spent most of their time apart. The whole incest-thing was not as dark as I got from other reviews as the story did not go in to too much detail and it only involved two extremely sleazy adults who would have been a danger to barnyard animals. (Actually, what I found to be just a tad creepy was the heroine's total and consuming obsession toward the hero practically since her birth.) The murderer was obvious if your roots are deep enough in the south, but the reason behind it was such a prosaic letdown. There were so many more imaginative possibilities. I found After The Night an intriguing Southern story by this author. Narrator was fine.

    Story
"So I liked it, but I'm pretty creeped out...."

So here's what matters. The narration was superb! I have just added Natalie Ross to my fav list. She is easily in my top 10. I think it had a good storyline (in general).

What I didn't like? Yes, as everyone else has said the incest was creepier than a haunted house. There are just some things that I am not used to (thank goodness), do not want to get used to, and don't even want to think about...and incest is right up on the top of that list. I mean creepy...

And not that I'm trying to continuously tell you how much I am frazzled by that (which is obvious), but whats up with the whole cousin thing? Um 2nd cousins are not distant cousins. Geesh 2nd cousins come over for dinner and not just on holidays. I mean who lives with cousins their whole lives... only to grow up and sleep with them? This could not be normal.

With that being said, I don't understand why the main character couldn't have been like a God-daughter who was adopted by the family and just grew up with the other kids. I mean did they really have to be cousins though? I mean in my eyes you are only distant cousins when you can't exactly pinpoint how you are related lol.

OK so back to the story. I really liked Webb. I thought he was interesting, firm but kind hearted, and masculine. I liked Roanna too but geesh she was a bit obsessed with Webb. I mean who harbors that type of obsession over a span of 20 years??

I think it had a good storyline (in general) and I really enjoyed this read. Shocking I know, but seriously if incest was taken out of the picture I would have rated this book a 5 and loved it. Even still I recommend it. And to top it off I did learn something from this book...I could never be a private investigator because not once could I correctly guess who the real killer was.
