Publisher's summary

The Kelly Group International (KGI): a super-elite, top secret, family-run business. Qualifications: high intelligence, rock-hard body, military background. Mission: hostage/kidnap victim recovery. Intelligence gathering. Handling jobs the U.S. government can't...

P. J. and Cole were sharpshooting rivals on the same KGI team and enjoyed a spirited, uncomplicated camaraderie. Until the night they gave in to their desires and suddenly took their relationship one step further. In the aftermath of their one-night stand, they're called out on a mission that goes terribly wrong, and P. J. walks away from KGI, resolved not to drag her teammates into the murky shadows she’s poised to delve into.

Six months later, Cole hasn't given up his search for P. J., and he's determined to bring her back home where she belongs. Bent on vengeance, P. J. has plunged into a serpentine game of payback that will make her question everything she's ever believed in. But Cole - and the rest of their team - refuse to let her go it alone. Even if it means sacrificing their loyalty to KGI, and their lives...

Narration Detracts from Story

I really miss the original narrator for this series. I'll read the next one instead.

Love the Story, Not the Narrator

I am on my second list of all of the KGI books. This story, while it has a sad aspect, told PJs story wonderfully. The narrator however (like everyone else has said), should have listened to prior books to get the inflections more accurately - esp for Rio. He didn't do the Kelly brothers and Steele's voices justice either. Not sure why Harry Berkeley didn't continue with the series, but it would be nice if books 5.5 thru 9 could be re-recorded with either Harry or Tad Branson. Or if Adam could re-record but with the correct intonations for everyone. Overall, I will be sad when this series ends. Thankfully I own them all so can listen over and over again.

Narrator

I wish when they start a series they would keep the same narrator. I did not care for this narrator as some of his alternative accents seemed cheesy.

Shades of Gray

Where to start? If the decision to pass the narration on to some else was Mr. Berkley’s, I completely understand. What a lazy story. There were all kinds of plots that Ms. Banks could’ve used for PJ’s novel. There wasn’t even any build up to the rape, the situation was introduced & anyone could see what would happen to her from a mile away. If Ms. Banks had to write a rape story, why not use one of the men? That’s a tale that hasn’t been told a million times. How would an alpha male cope with the humiliation?. So many of the plot elements were so obvious, there really was no suspense to it at all.

The man they got to replace Mr. Berkley was not very good, honestly. Giving the Kellys southern accents drove me up the wall.
I don’t know if I’ll keep this book, let alone listen to any more because of the new narrator. I may just get the ebook & use my own imagination as to what everyone sounds like!

Great book, terrible narration!

I love maya banks, she is a great author and I own several of her series. KGI is a great addition, hot determined, sexy, possessive , military men make for a great series. Shades of grey is a great addition to the series, with the gut wrenching plot twists that mark KGI Banks isn’t holding back the puches. This book isn’t for the faint of heart or for anyone who may have experienced sexual assault. I really love the way Banks shows how close a military team is, they are a true family, sometimes the only people the others have to turn to in a crisis and they’ll do or die for each other.
My one problem with this book is the narrator. It appears after book five the audio contract switched from recorded books to penguin audio, and the spectacular narration of Harry Berkeley was replaced with the oh so frustrating Adam Paul. Paul general narration voice is actually pretty nice to listen, but in some ways that makes the awe fullness of character voices worse, because I know he could do them nicely. Instead all of the males, strong, built military men, sound nasally and some nearly shrill, the women either sound masculine or nails on chalkboard shrill, and all the keys have a nice hick twang on top of the nasal tone. I nearly cried when Rio, my beautiful Spanish Rio, came on scene sounding like a high pitched southern hick. I kept gritting my teeth hoping it would get better, but it never did, and the longer I listened the more I had to grit my teeth. Finally I had to give up with 3.5 hours remaining and buy the kindle version. Maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad if hadnt had Berkeley’s awesome narration for the first five books, I don’t know. I know that with penguin in charge now there’s likely some contractual reason they can’t have Berkeley do the books but I know penguin has good narrators. I pray that they will have someone better redo these books. Because until they do I won’t be listening past book five.

Another really good KGI read

This romance touched on some really violent, horrific & sensitive subjects, but Ms Banks handled them really well. It’s tragic that these things happen daily in the real world. The story of PJ & Cole was really heart wrenching. She got a man straight out of her romance books, she loves so much. A sweet, alpha badass.

Lots of tears

Wow, this has been the most heart wrenching book, in the series. I could not stop the tears during hours, of this book. This book includes a very descriptive, violent rape scene. Those who have triggers from this will want to avoid this book. There is also a lot of vigilante torture And murder. Anyone that is too sensitive for that kind of story should choose A different book. However, I don't want to give the impression that the theme of this book is About vigilante justice, it's not. The underlying message is About unconditional love, loyality, respect, empathy, friendship and family. I'm not only referring to family that is related by blood but family by choice.
Ladies, our hero, Cole has to be the type of man that every woman dreams of.
In my opinion, it is imperative that the reader searches for the underlying message. Otherwise, the material is intolerable And brutal.

More than expected

What was one of the most memorable moments of Shades of Gray?

When the mission failed and pj got hurt

What about Adam Paul’s performance did you like?

Voices and emotion

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the rest of pj's team showed up to help her

Any additional comments?

Very good
