Publisher's Summary

The Kelly Group International (KGI): a super-elite, top secret, family-run business. Qualifications: high intelligence, rock-hard body, military background. Mission: hostage/kidnap victim recovery. Intelligence gathering. Handling jobs the U.S. government can't...

P. J. and Cole were sharpshooting rivals on the same KGI team and enjoyed a spirited, uncomplicated camaraderie. Until the night they gave in to their desires and suddenly took their relationship one step further. In the aftermath of their one-night stand, they're called out on a mission that goes terribly wrong, and P. J. walks away from KGI, resolved not to drag her teammates into the murky shadows she’s poised to delve into.

Six months later, Cole hasn't given up his search for P. J., and he's determined to bring her back home where she belongs. Bent on vengeance, P. J. has plunged into a serpentine game of payback that will make her question everything she's ever believed in. But Cole - and the rest of their team - refuse to let her go it alone. Even if it means sacrificing their loyalty to KGI, and their lives...

    "FUNNY"
Would you listen to Shades of Gray again? Why?

Yes, this book was great. A little different from the other KGI stories, but the same concept.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Adam Paul?

I did not like him as much as the other man. But, I might listen to him with another book not this series

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    yes!

    "Narration just does not fit."
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes and no. I always enjoy books by this author, but I will have to read them from now on.

What did you like best about this story?

The twists and turns in the relationship of two people who must find a way to both work and love together.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I am sure he would have been ok if he had started the series from the beginning. However, I just cannot get used to hearing Steel's voice in such a high pitch. It was like nails on a chalkboard!

Do you think Shades of Gray needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. Like all the KGI novels, I will enjoy updates in the books that follow.

    Any additional comments?

These books are stand alone, but I would advise that next time there needs to be a change in narration for whatever reason, try to keep with the same type of voice at least. The southern accent does not make up for the change in pitch.

    "Great story; bad narrator"
What made the experience of listening to Shades of Gray the most enjoyable?

Love PJ & Cole's story - strong heroine. New narrator does HORRIBLE male voices. Everyone (regardless of geographical origin) has a southern accent and sounds constipated. Rio is the worst.

What did you like best about this story?

PJ is a strong heroine who saves herself.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Every male voice made me cringe.

"Kick ass action and romance...and hot sex!"

I read this book before I got the audio version and was impressed with it--so much so I quickly bought the previous books in the series as well as those since. Curiosity led me to try the audio version and I was not disappointed.

The reading was not a dry repetition of the words. Mr. Paul brought the same emotion and life to the characters that I read in the print edition.

Shades Of Gray is Book 6 of Maya Banks' KGI series about a private military unit made up of Alpha, former Spec Ops soldiers who happen to be brothers. I was very pleased to discover the women involved with the Kelly's--the one woman on either of the teams as well as their romantic interests--were as Alpha as the men themselves.

The action is as hot as the characters but there is always a human edge to every action.

Cole and P.J. finally act upon their mutual attraction just in time to be thrown into a mission that quickly goes sideways and leaves P.J. feeling like she has to leave her team in order to avenge herself on the men who raped her.

Her decision hurts her teammates and pisses them off but *not* to the point of deserting her. When she needs them most, they're right there covering her back and supporting her in every decision. Including the one she's faced with: to return to KGI or let her unwelcomed resignation stand.

The action is bloody, the character interaction tense in all the right places and the romance true to those involved. These are individual *people* and are portrayed as such in both print and audio.

This book received some criticism due P.J.'s rape scene, but it was a major point in the story and Maya Banks handled it and the resulting trauma tastefully I thought. I also thought that those who criticized this have, for the most part, no problem with a character having a rape in her history. They just don't want to 'see' it. Which is not what happens here and I think skimming over it or merely referring to it would not have offered as strong a story.

    "Crappy narrator"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

    could not tollorate the narrator

Would you ever listen to anything by Maya Banks again?

not until she get's the narrator for the last book better

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I wanted to toss my Kindle in the pool

What would have made this romance irresistible?

    nothing

    Any additional comments?

"REDEMPTION! After Psycho-Bombs -KGI is BACK!"
What did you like about this audiobook?

I had given up on the fantastic KGI series because Whispers in the Dark & Echos At Dawn went on to some weird psychic, healing storyline... I'm not into the 'changeling', half-man half-beast, paranormal, Sci-Fi stuff and was disappointed because that's not what I signed up for.

I like the manly men KGI team NOTE-this is a ROMANCE with stretches of THRILLER/ACTION. Anyway, Shades of Gray brings the series back to what I enjoyed so much in the first 3 installments. Strong men defending the weak and seducing a woman along the way!

The Kelly Group International (KGI): a super-elite, top secret, family-run business. Qualifications: high intelligence, rock-hard body, military background. Mission: hostage/kidnap victim recovery. Intelligence gathering. Handling jobs the U.S. government can’t...

In the aftermath of their one-night stand, they’re called out on a mission that goes terribly wrong, and P. How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

I enjoy Spec Ops books, however there are 2 categories. Those that are 'real' -Vince Flynn, Mark Greaney, Tom Clancy...

Then there are the Romantic Spec Ops books...Suzanne Brockman & Maya Banks.

I like both, but if you are a fan of the former you may be disappointed with the later.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

Unlike many reviewers, I enjoyed Adam Paul's performance. Maybe I wasn't as attached to the previous narrator as I took a break between books. He was animated and differentiated between characters.

*I was not an Adam Paul fan prior to this book-he narrates for Maya Banks and his performance for her Breathless Series was lackluster.

Do you have any additional comments?

NOTE: Descriptions of sex, violence and strong language.

    "WTF...."

Why would they change the narrator?!... This was a great story. I was so excited about hearing PJ's story :-/ but this narrator was NOT good for this variety of characters. What kind of accent was that for Rio?... Definitely NOT a Brazilian accent. The narrator was not successful or this book... I felt like I was listening to the men in the cast of Duck Dynasty half of the time. I've heard him on other books and I do enjoy his voice. Just NOT for this book...

*Note to anthers, publishing houses and the universe at large: DO NOT CHANGE NARRATOR IN THE MIDDLE OF A SERIES. It makes this series less appealing now.

"Aauugghh! New narrator just doesn't work!"

It is very irritating to be enjoying a series and have the narration changed mid-stream! It doesn't feel like the same storyline. Also, could you please get a narrator that can correctly pronounce the big words....I spent half the time correcting his pronunciations. I agree with everyone else's statements that the over done hick-like accents make the Kelly's seem like idiots. I wanted to like this story, but I really didn't. If you are reading the series, you probably need to read this one to follow the storyline, but.......it is definitely not the same series.

    "Great Narrator"

I enjoyed this one more than some of the earlier KGIs, partly because I much prefer this narrator. I bought this book partly because I have enjoyed this narrator's work on other Maya Banks books. Also, though, the story is exciting and the characters interesting. I have enjoyed some of the earlier KGIs but the narrator made all the difference for me on this one.

"If only the narrator wasn't changed!!!!!"
How could the performance have been better?

Should have stayed with the same narrator (Harry Berkeley). He had all the characters dead on in the first books of the series. Love this series and I hope that Harry Berkeley will be reading the additional books to this series.
