Publisher's summary

When a mystery writer cries bloody murder, everyone blames her overactive imagination.

Thriller scribe Sophie Katz is as hard-boiled as a woman who drinks Grande Caramel Brownie Frappuccionos can be; maybe it's from a lifetime of fielding dumb comments about her half-black, half-Jewish ethnicity. ("My sister's married to a Polynesian! I just love your culture!") So Sophie knows it's not paranoia, or post-divorce, living-alone-again jitters, when she becomes convinced that a crazed reader is sneaking into her apartment to reenact scenes from her books. The police, however, can't tell a good plot from an unmarked grave.

When a filmmaker friend is brutally murdered in the manner of a death scene in one of his movies, Sophie becomes convinced that a copycat killer is on the loose...and that she's the next target. If she doesn't solve the mystery, her own best seller will spell out her doom. Cursing her grisly ending (why, oh, why did she have to pick the axe?), Sophie engages in some real-life gumshoe tactics.

The man who swoops in to save her in dark alleys at night is mysterious new love interest Anatoly Darinsky. Of course, if this were fiction, Anatoly would be her prime suspect.

Solve another case with Sophie.

The story was o.k., but I couldn't stand the reader

Oops

I read this book after having read the fourth or fifth in the series, the one where she gets the Victorian house that’s supposedly haunted. The characters that I found charming and hilarious in that book come off as strange to me in this book. Also, her sister is a giant tool who seems to have no concern for others’ lives or responsibilities (my sister is eerily similar). As far as the story, I feel like there were so many different parts that it was hard to follow and might be better off read rather than heard. Gabe’s Zackman does an okay job, but she’s better at exotic/foreign accents than voice modulation.

Not so much

Drops the f bomb way to much. Sophia and deana are so cruel and condescending to their sweet friend. They bully and shame her. I found very little to like. I won’t be moving on to the next book.

So much fun

A really excellent cozy mystery with a unique heroine. I absolutely love this fast-moving book, with a fun cast of characters and a great mix of romance and thrills. The story is a little dated at times (phones), but I found it so gripping. I’m so glad I bought this book.

Fun - not serious

A light & funny mystery that kept me on the treadmill much longer than my usual time - that's a good thing. I enjoyed the writing as well as the narration. The characters are sarcastic, sassy and likeable- I am looking forward to a 2nd book by the author.

Narrator Made the Difference

This is a fun read. I'm not sure if this is a first time effort of the writer Krya Davis. This is the only novel by her on Audible. If it is, I think she will continue to grow. It was a great mix of humor and lite mystery. If your expecting Agatha Christie or such then this isn't for you. If your looking for fun and something to while away the afternoon, then this is for you. Brava to the narrator, hope to hear her in future audio books.

Great Fun, but does she get her man?

I felt this was a fun and engaging book. The characters had just a touch of the dramatic that made me laugh and feel entertained. The mystery plot was just the right amount of suspense. A little disappointed that you don’t find out if she “gets her man” at the end, but maybe the sequel will answer that question…let’s just say I finished listening to the book at 9:30 pm and I was checking to see if there was a sequel by 10 pm.

Another Evanovich!

Altho completely different in plot and characters, the light tone and the really gut laughs are wonderful. These are not deep characters, which is fine. It is a breezy, fun listen and I definitely recommend it.

fun, thoughtless listen

as other reviews have noted - great to do chores to. Don't have to really think about the book. Language is a bit much, not necessary to convey meaning.

Light and Funny

Would you consider the audio edition of Sex, Murder, and a Double Latte to be better than the print version?

I truly enjoyed listening to this book. The main character's first person viewpoint was irreverent and 'laugh out loud' funny. It's a lighthearted mystery with a mystery writer as the amateur sleuth. Great secondary characters all add to the madcap fun.

What other book might you compare Sex, Murder, and a Double Latte to and why?

One for the Money by Janet Evanovich - both have main viewpoint characters that are just a little whacky. Both are lighthearted in voice, while maintaining a serious murder mystery.

Have you listened to any of Gabra Zackman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my second Gabra Zackman listen, my first was Passion, Betrayal and Killer Highlights.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes!

Any additional comments?

I'm looking forward to more books in this series.
