Publisher's summary

What if you learned that your fiancé was not who he claimed to be?

Engaged to the charming and seductive Greg Anders, Sara Shaw is happily anticipating her wedding in Edilean, Virginia. The date has been set, the flowers ordered, even her heirloom dress is ready. But just three weeks before the wedding, Greg gets a telephone call during the night and leaves without explanation. Two days later, a man climbs up through a trapdoor in the floor of Sara’s apartment, claiming that he is the brother of her best friend and that he’s moving in.

While Mike Newland is indeed telling the truth about his identity, his reason for being there reaches far deeper. He’s an undercover detective, and his assignment is to use Sara to track down a woman who is one of the most notorious criminals in the United States—and also happens to be the mother of the man Sara plans to marry.

Mike thinks the job will be easy—if he can figure out how to make a “good” girl like Sara trust him, that is. But Mike has no idea what this mission has in store for him. He’s worked hard to keep private his connections to Edilean, which date back to his grandmother’s time there in 1941. But as Mike and Sara get to know each other, he can’t help but share secrets about himself that he’s told no one else. And in return, Sara opens up to Mike about things she could never reveal to Greg. As the pair work together to solve two mysteries, their growing love begins to heal each of them in ways they never could have imagined.

Critic reviews

"Deveraux is a master storyteller, and her books fairly shimmer with excitement and adventure, making her one of the most popular women’s fiction writers today. Scarlet Nights is no exception. With strong characters, down-home charm, and an intriguing story, fans will enjoy catching up with the folks from Edilean." ( Times Record News)

Great Story, lousy narrater

If you could sum up Scarlet Nights in three words, what would they be?

Exciting, Suspenseful, Heart Warming

What did you like best about this story?

It was believable and exciting.

What didn’t you like about Julia Gibson’s performance?

All the voices sounded the same a little whiney and weak. Did not show all the strong personalities of Miss Edi, Joc, Luke and especially Tess. I would never again purchase an audible book that was narrated by Julia Gibson.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

Jude, Please choose Barbara McCulloh or Davina Porter for all your books,

Moronic

What disappointed you about Scarlet Nights?

I expected an actual mystery, not a Harlequin ROMANCE. The premise was entirely preposterous.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Nothing from this author.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Character voices lacking and the fake Southern accents on SOME but not all the characters from VA.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It started out promising and then got ridiculous.

Narrator

The story is good but the narrator’s voice put me to sleep. Her voice inflections sounded like she was reading a children’s book.

G.d.

I have never read or listen to so much trash in my 70 years of life, some people are making money with garbage.
What was described what the book should have been about, was mostly a lie, I call this cheating the customer.
I will think twice to order a book again from this company. And this so called author should stop writing, her IQ must be quite low.

I love the book, but not the audio version.

I was very disappointed in the audio-version of Scarlet Nights. I have read the books in print so was very familiar with the storyline and characters. After listening to Lavender Morning on audio, I was even more disappointed to listen to this audio-version of Scarlet Nights. I actually had to push through it. Although I appreciate that the narrator seemed to make a great effort to distinguish between the characters by using multiple voices, I did not feel she had an understanding of the characters at all. As soon as I heard her use a very soft, fragile and timid voice for the character Tess, I knew right away she did not know the characters and was not familiar with any of the books in this series. Tess is possibly the boldest, sassiest and strongest female character in the series. However, in this audio version she comes across mouse-like which completely threw me off.
I really like this book in print and even though it wasn't as bad toward the end, felt the audio version missed a lot of marks.

Lifeless Narration

I'll press on to the conclusion of Scarlet Nights. The 'reader' presented an otherwise good Jude Deveraux Edilean series book with an abundance of lackluster. Utterly disappointed in the lifeless voice who drained the main character of personality. Buy the print copy.
