Publisher's Summary

If you liked the Magnificent Seven, you'll love the Rock Creek Six!

Mary McKendrick, a head-strong school teacher who wants nothing more than to find a home in her adopted town of Rock Creek, Texas, takes charge when a band of ruffians attempts to destroy the town. Mary hires Reese, the mysterious, and reluctant, leader of a band of deadly Confederate veterans, to protect them.

Reese is haunted by the war and what he did during it. The only constant in his life are the five men willing to come to his side whenever he calls them.

Though Mary prides herself on managing everyone and anything, she can't manage Reese or her feelings for him. Reese doesn't believe he is worthy of loyalty and devotion; he certainly isn't worthy of love. In Rock Creek, with Mary, he learns differently.

    "A nice western romance"

This is the kind of Western romance my Gram loves, that is not an insult she reads some great books.

The story is kind of loose in spots, it could have a tighter construction. It is predictable, it you read a lot of this genre. Still it was entertaining with a few intriguing twists. I adore the dynamic between the two leads. It was a delight watching Mary and Reese fall in love.

The love happens kind of quick. Perhaps I should have said fall in liking. I have no doubt the emotions will grow, but it is early days. The bedroom door is half way open, not a lot of detail.

Yeah for the mixed narrative giving us insight into the characters. We have the two leads POV and a few bonus narrations as well! Most of the tale comes from Mary and Reese, as it should be in a romance.

The supporting cast is fantastic! I can not wait for these fellas to all fall! Cash and Rico are a couple favorites!

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Bobbin Beam, who does a fantastic read! I really enjoyed her voices, just enough accent to make it feel authentic. Great pace and energy throughout! I would definitely look for more of her work!

Disclosure - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thought, ratings and opinions are my own.

    "Great Western Romance!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you are a fan of Julie Garwood's "For the Roses" westerns, or Linda Howard's westerns, you should give this new series a try!

The story starts off when the local teacher of Rock Creek, Mary McKendrick, hires Reese to get rid of a group of bandits that continually attack the small Texas town. Reese brings his misfit group of ex-Confederate soldiers to take care of the problem. When they arrive in Rock Creek it takes awhile for the townspeople to warm up to them, but Mary's attraction to Reese is immediate. Like most of Lori's female leads, Mary is a force to be reckoned with and Reese just can't resist her.

What did you like best about this story?

I grew to really enjoy the other men in Reese's group - the Rock Creek Six - and I'm really looking forward to their stories in the series.

    Which scene was your favorite?

When Mary takes over and defends the town after Reese is injured.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Absolutely!

    Any additional comments?

far as the narration of this audio book goes, the pace was good. But, I found that the voice of Reese was inconsistent in Bobbin Beam's performance. Sometimes I got confused with "who" was speaking when more than two men were in a scene. Other than that, I really enjoyed it!

    "GREAT Story, Yucky Narration"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No - the narration was not good at all.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Reese?

Mary's and Reese's introduction was very entertaining.

The introduction of the Rock Creek Six was very interesting. The book is really well written and a strong character base is built during this first book in the series.

    Any additional comments?

I used the "whispersync" option and bought the ebook and the audio book both at great prices. I actually ended up reading more of the book than listening because the narration was just boring.

I would definitely recommend the book, but I cannot recommend the audiobook.
