Up until Travis arrived on his doorstep, Charlie had lived a very solitary life. He had surrounded himself with isolation; a couple million acres of red dirt, scorching sun, and loneliness. Six months on, winter has settled over the desert, and Charlie has the life he never dreamed possible. But living and working together, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for six months straight starts to take its toll. Charlie is a stubborn, stubborn man, who tends to have more conversations in his head than what comes out his mouth, whereas Travis has no problem saying what's on his mind. And even as they both struggle to communicate, struggle to make sense of need versus want, Charlie can see that he's pushing Travis away - yet seems helpless to stop it. When it all boils down to whether Travis should stay or go, maybe the decision won't be theirs to make.

Anyone who refers to Joel Leslie as a narrator grossly understates what he does with a story. He doesn’t simply recite the words on the pages, he performs them. He makes the story come alive with his passion. He sucks you into the story and brings forth every emotion of every character on the pages. And this series is filled with emotion that only Joel Leslie can radiate.
This series is now and always will be one of my absolute favorite stories. Travis and Charlie are just so…everything. I do love Travis…his stubbornness, his passion, his humor, his intelligence, his dedication to the homestead and to Charlie. But there is absolutely something about Charlie that makes him my favorite. He seems so vulnerable, while exuding confidence. He has been so hurt and just needs love but when he gets it he doesn’t know what to do with it. He shows everyone his strength while hiding what a soft, kind-hearted man he is to everyone except Travis. The times when they are alone are some of the sweetest. I love the foot hooking and nose rubbing and just plain staring into each other’s eyes. These two melt my heart.
If you haven’t read or listened to this series, you absolutely must! You won’t regret it!
This is a series that must be read in order, so I’m assuming you’ve at least read book one if not the entire series by now.
Travis and Charlie have been living and working together for 6 months now and things are mostly on an even keel. The two stubborn boys clash now and again, but mostly, they love one another.
They have some minor/major-ish squabbles over Travis wanting to raise a baby Kangaroo and Charlie worrying incessantly that Travis isn’t happy out in the boonies. But then … real trouble hits when immigration pulls Travis’ visa and Travis faces exportation.
Wow oh wow this was a great book! I had wondered what trouble the boys would get into since the last book ended fairly happily settled and boy do they have trouble.
Charlie really fretted this book. Like constantly. He just can’t get his brain wrapped around Travis being happy out there. The two fight and fight about it and almost split up as a result. But then Charlie digs deep and does some really, really amazing growing and – pull out the tissues – the end result is so sweet, it makes your teeth ache. (The scene at the Cattleman’s meeting and Immigration are the places where the Kleenex will come most in handy!)
I love Charlie and Travis as a couple and was so pleased to see them dealing with real life issues but still retaining the fairy tale romance.
I highly recommend this book and the series!
I’d forgotten how heartbreaking and wonderful this part of Charlie and Travis’ s story is, what makes it even more emotional is the amazing job Joel Leslie does with Charlie’s part -not that Travis doesn’t have his moments, but the end – when Charlie finally busts free and shares his feelings – MAN – talk about a Kleenex moment! You can hear the tears in Joel’s voice and it brings the sobs out even harder!
I absolutely love this series and I think Joel is absolutely AMAZING in his narration.
6 of 5 stars
The atmosphere, the chemistry between Travis & Charlie
Great overall series, I enjoyed the first two books on Audible that I could not wait and went right through the entire series in a week.
I listened to both books in the Red Dirt Heart series, and would definitely listen to them again. Walker is the most skillful first-person writer I've encountered. I was well into the second book before I actually realized both books were in first-person.
I might compare the writing to Klune's Bear, Otter, & the Kid. Another first-person series, and another engaging story. Only Walker's writing didn't tend to go overboard on the internal dialogue. Just the right mix of internal thinking and external reaction.
At the cattleman's meeting when Charlie gets into a fist fight defending Travis, and he outs himself to the entire room. Charlie's biggest fear was fellow ranchers finding out he was gay. Travis was out and proud, but kept his love for Charlie hidden so as to not force Charlie out. Not only did Charlie out himself, he made Travis realize how much he loved him.
I totally could have, but I don't have 7-hours in a stretch. Both books in this series are the type you can't "put down" (or stop listening to).
Joel Leslie's narration is top notch. I've met him and talked with him. He does foreign accents like a native. Unbelievable. And he makes each character stand out. He brings the characters to life, and engages the listener in the story.
This is one of my favorite series and I love revisiting Travis and Charlie's story. In this installment Charlie is faced with confronting his insecurities about losing Travis. He stubbornly refuses to believe that Travis will stay with him and in doing so it almost becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. It is another wonderful but emotional roller coaster that Joel Leslie navigates brilliantly. He has toned down Charlie's Australian accent from the first book and it really makes a difference. I was drawn into the story immediately and once again he made me cry with Charlie's realization when faced with losing Travis. Can't wait for Book 3.
I'm an unabashed fiction fan: mostly M/M, Romance, Erotica, Suspense, Thrillers, Action, NA/YA genres.
I love this story. Maybe more than the first, which I thought would be impossible. I laughed, I sighed, I cried, and I was left with a full heart and a smile on my face.
I adore the voices Joel Leslie does in order to bring these characters to life. He uses such emotion, giving such depth and nuance to the story, it's quite simply a treat to listen to!
Joel captures every nuance of feeling from Charlie's inner worry to his fear of losing Travis. There's a scene in this that is so charged, so brilliantly acted, that I had tears streaming down my face as my heart broke for Charlie and Travis in that moment.
Yes, Red Dirt Heart 2 has a little more angst than RDH1, but it's deliciously done. It's like a perfectly planned meal with every offering only serving to enhance the whole.
Even though the story is entirely from Charlie's first person POV, the listener still gets a really clear idea of Travis and the other characters in the story.
I love that Charlie accepts who he is and grows into the man he's meant to be.
A+ narration here and definitely going into my auto-rotation!
I'm now waiting impatietly for the Red Dirt Heart 3 audio!
This is such a wonderful series. I loved the books, but Audible makes the series even better. The stories just leap off the page. Cannot recommend enough, it will warm you heart.
Your typical audiobook listener. Middle-aged, white, married woman who loves M/M and erotic romance. The psychologist part - a bonus.
Hits you right in the feels. Joel Leslie's narration is perfect. His accents are believable and consistent throughout. Found myself laughing and crying through this beautiful love story. Thank you for this wonderful piece of audible art!
I loved the books and I love the audiobooks even more. Joel Leslie's narration is superb.
"Such a wonderful series"
This series is a wonderful reading experience. Add in the fabulous narrative of Joel Leslie and it jumps up another notch. It's quite a list of characters and Mr Leslie has no trouble making them all easily identified. I found myself laughing in places and crying in others. NR Walker has promised the rest of the series in audio soon and to be honest I can't wait!
"A brilliant narration of a wonderful story."
Continuing the story of Charlie and Travis, this second book doesn't disappoint, warm, funny and full of Aussie charm, completely brought to life by the brilliant narration, loved it!
