Audible Editor Reviews

As far as romance archetypes go, the heroine who sees past the terrible face of the beast into the heart of a good man is one of the very best. And nobody tells this redemption story better than Amanda Quick.

Narrator Anne Flosnik mines this little jewel of a romance novel for every smart, charming morsel — and there's a feast here. She's especially good in the scenes where the heroine and hero go toe-to-toe negotiating and navigating their sudden marriage of convenience. Flosnik brings these two strong, passionate characters alive as they challenge themselves and are challenged by each other to get to the heart of what makes a great marriage. She catches all the fabulous nuance in these scenes; the hard-won self-knowledge and the confusing self-doubt, their strengths and blind spots, to make them one of the liveliest, most appealing pair of lovers in the genre.

And, with the smart and sexy romance at the core of this story, there's just the right amount of humor and mystery to keep things exhilarating. it's great fun to watch the heroine fight - literally throw a couple of punches in one scene - to defend the hero's honor. And Flosnik's hilarious readings of the voice-of-doom Scottish housekeeper and the heroine's growing entourage of geeky fossil hunters make this story a delight.

As their marriage pushes the hero and heroine to grow and change, the mystery plot brings them to their crisis moment. But now, with all their new insights and strengths, they work together to a resolution that will thrill listeners.

At it's very best, a romance novel should leave the listener feeling "this is exactly the best ending i would have picked for these two people - this is why they are perfect for each other!" Quick and Flosnik have done it here: the joy of listening to Ravished is seeing the passion, love, and friendship that develops between these two people. The fun is in the lively pace, clever mystery plot, and quirky humor, all of which will put this audiobook firmly on your keeper shelf to be listened to and re-listened to as years go by. —Nancy Carter

Publisher's Summary

There was no doubt about it. What Miss Harriet Pomeroy needed was a man. Someone powerful and clever who could help her rout the unscrupulous thieves who were using her beloved caves to hide their loot. But when Harriet summoned Gideon Westbrook Viscount St. Justin to her aid, she could not know that she was summoning the devil himself....
Dubbed the Beast of Blackthorne Hall for his scarred face and lecherous past, Gideon was strong and fierce and notoriously menacing. Yet Harriet could not find it in her heart to fear him. For in his tawny gaze she sensed a savage pain she longed to soothe...and a searing passion she yearned to answer.

Now, caught up in the beast's clutches, Harriet must find a way to win his heart - and evade the deadly trap of a scheming villain who would see them parted for all time.

What the Critics Say

"Although more romance than Regency - a few articles of clothing and a liberal sprinkling of the word ton suffice for atmosphere - genre aficionados will find this a spiffy read." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Characters voices a disappointment"

This is one of my all time favorite books by Amanda Quick so I was very excited when I saw that an audible book had been done. But I was fairly disappointed in the narrator. She saw ok for reading the text but I felt that she missed the mark when it came to the characters voices - especially the hero's voice. She made him sound condescending and unpleasant. Not at all how you would want a hero to sound.

    "Ravished"

I love Amanda Quick and this book is one of my favorites but I have a hard time listening due to narrater's voice. When she does Gidion's lines I usually end up going to something else. At this rate I will never get to the end

    "Book - 5 stars...Narration - 2 stars"

I truly love Amanda Quick. And I am truly saddened by the fact that almost all of her books seem to be narrated by Anne Flosnik. The other disaster is Josephine Bailey (who narrates other AQ books)...*sigh*

The book - Great characters, fun predicaments, great romance!

The narration - almost painful to listen to (although I appreciate the British accent) because the voice was thready and her attempt at a masculine voice was a disaster. I actually could not finish listening to this book (although I have read it several times) due to the narration.

So, while I love Amanda Quick in hard copy, I will not be spending anymore money on her audiobooks.

"Finally the Narrator Gets It Right"

Finally Anne Flosnick catches the right tone with Amanda Quick's Ravished! She was, at last, able to get the hero's proper attitude down! Yes haughty and cold (for good reason) but totally besotted and indulgent with the heroine from the very beginning, just as all of Quick's heroes are!

Quick has long been a favorite author for me so to see her earlier books coming out on audio was exciting. To hate Flosnick's interruption of the heroes personalities until Ravished was very disappointing. I haven't listened to the other two in the "R" series as I'm afraid of wasting more credits as I did with the three "S" series of books.

To say I was totally underwhelmed by Flosnick's narration of the three "S" series of books is an understatement. Flosnick ruined them for me with her harsh/cruel interpretation of the heroes. Quick has never written that type of a hero! They may be firm and try to remain cold in trying to come to grips with the feisty heroines but they are always besotted and indulgent right from the start. If I can't "hear" that classic Quick hero then the books are not worth listening to.

For me Ravished was finally narrated properly and I thoroughly enjoyed the listen.

When I clean, drive or exercise I listen to romance. The steamier the better but it must have a great story as well!

    "An entertaining story"

I love Amanda Quick, I have always liked that her characters are not the beautiful people. Instead they are eccentric or maybe a little scary, and lets face it most of us are. ;) However, the female lead in the story is always getting into some sort of situation. I have no idea how she managed to survive her first 24 years without having her own personal hero. It seemed like she should be put into a padded cell just to keep her safe. That part aside, I really did love the interaction between the hero and heroine. They fit each other perfectly, complimenting one where the other may fall short. Overall, a charming book that I know I will listen to several more times.

    "Could Not Finish"

Some people like Anne Flosnik's narration; I guess I'm not one of them. I find her deeply annoying; it sounds almost like she's patronizing me when she reads.

The incomparable Barbara Rosenblat read almost all of Amanda Quick's work for Recorded Books; very few of those are currently available on Audible, which is too bad. Flosnik's narration was unlistenable (for me) and I had to stop listening about 3 hours in. Maybe Audible will be able to buy the rights to the Rosenblat editions of the Amanda Quick books - until then, no more of these!

    "Best and most expressive narrator"
What did you love best about Ravished?

    The intelligence of the herione

What did you like best about this story?

    Too hard to choose.

Have you listened to any of Anne Flosnik’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love her voice. She does men believably well and sounds very authentic. I only buy audio by her if she is the only narrator.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The loyality and blind faith both characters had for one another.

    Any additional comments?

This is a very well written book, it makes you laugh and feel what the characters feel. It pulls you in to the story and makes you a part of it!

    "Fantastic historical love drama"
Where does Ravished rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Among the very best.

What did you like best about this story?

Love scenes were great and the mystery throughout was very good. Narration was very good.

What does Anne Flosnik bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She did the voices and captured the mood of the characters, enjoyed that.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The reconciliations. The first time the characters spoke of their true feelings. The action scenes in the cave.

    Any additional comments?

This book would make a good movie.

    Story
    "One of my personal favorites..."

This period romance is a favorite of mine. The heroine is an amateur fossil hunter who has discovered thieves using her precious caves to store their loot. She calls on the local lord to clear out the villains so she can get on with her collecting.

The relationship between this quirky, on the shelf, rector's daughter and the peer of the realm who finds himself ruining her is a romp. Their love story unfolds as the master thief is tracked through the finest drawing rooms of the Ton.

My only problem with this recording is the narrator, Anne Flosnik. Her beautiful accent would appear to be perfect for this recording but she draws out random syllables in emphasis, and I found it distracting and annoying. It did not keep me from enjoying Amanda Quick's excellent story, however.
