Publisher's summary

Overflowing with all of the majesty and intrigue of medieval glory days, this magnificent New York Times best seller is a captivating story of passion and loyalty, justice and honor. Beloved storyteller Julie Garwood steps back to the silver-shrouded Highlands of her classic tale The Secret - and hails the return of two unforgettable warriors: Ramsey Sinclair and Brodick Buchanan.

In the dark days after the death of Richard the Lionhearted, lives and lands would fall into upheaval at the hands of a power-hungry British ruler and his violent minions. One victim of the scourge is innocent Gillian, who is a mere child when the cruel and ambitious Baron Alford slaughters her father and tears her family apart. Alford, determined to recover a jeweled box for the despotic King John, is furious when the precious treasure slips through his fingers - only to be lost for more than a decade.

Now a beautiful young woman, Gillian finds the key to resolving her past in handsome Scottish chieftains Ramsey Sinclair and Brodick Buchanan. With the cunning and courage of the daring Scotsmen, and with the friendship of a new ally, Bridgid KirkConnell, Gillian at last fights the unscrupulous Baron Alford, laying claim to her home, her family, and her father's reputation. But in the presence of the mighty warriors, Gillian and Bridgid discover that desire can be a weapon of conquest...betrayal can slay trust in a heartbeat...and the greatest risk of all is surrender - to the deep emotions of unexpected love.

Love most of the story!

The story of Brodick and Gillian is terrific, typical Julie Garwood. A great highlander love story. This is the Second time I've listened to the book and I continue to feel gypped because Ramsey and Bridgid KirkConnell, should have a story of their own. I am still scratching my head as to why their story is inadequately combined with this one. C'est la vie, still completely worth the credit, I'm just always wanting more from Julie Garwood.

Who knew?

Do you think that it is impossible to tell a romance story with a humorous,,historically accurate, original, action adventur plot? I did,yet Julie Garwood did! This book is fun ,the characters are believable and the story is full of people we all wish we had for friends ! An outstanding story told by a refreshing and talented Master ToastMaster.

A love for him

Another great novel by Julie Garwood. Susan Duerden was a wonderful narrator. Gillian saw her father killed and the loss of the King Johns treasure. 14 years later she is summoned by the Baron who killed her father to go to the Highlands, find her sister and retrieve the jeweled box!
Ian’s son Alec is kidnapped by Highlanders who mistakenly think he is Ramsey’s little brother Michael. Gillian knows she must save him and when she does she will find her great love in a Highlander! A wonderful book!

So sweet and Laugh out loud Good.

Julie Garwood never disappoints me. The stories are so sweet and good that I never want to put them down. It likes you just have to know what’s happening next. The narrator was fantastic. Her accent was spot on. I’m anxious to listen to Julie’s next book in this series. But no matter what I read of Julie Garwood I’ve never been disappointed. Happy Reading!!

Excellent, excellent story!!!!

Wow what a fantastic story! Loved this book. The story line and plot is absolutely fantastic. There was always something going on all the time I didn't want to put it down.
I loved the hero, he was big, strong, handsome, arrogant, gruff, and caring. The heroine was wonderful, strong, beautiful, and very courageous, not whiny and whimpering.

There was so much wonderful dialogue throughout the entire book. (I love lots of dialogue). The chemistry was great and the sex scenes very well written.

As for the narrator, Susan Duerden, she did a great job. Much better performance than some of her others. The men sound like men and the women sound like women. Every one had their own distinct voice. She narrates with much emotion as it is called for in the book, ie. yelling, crying, whispering, etc. Of course it's Susan Duerdan so you get the sing song reading and drawwwnnn ouuutt worrrddss but you can get past it in this book.

I totally recommend this book it was amazing, as well as the first book in this series The Secret.

Just say yes yes yes to this book! It's totally worth it!

More than one Champion.

Another great highlander book from Julie Garwood, the time flew by and before I knew it the book was over. That usually is a sign of how good the book is. We finally get to have Broderick's story. We met him in The Secret, which is also an awesome book. Funny thing was the main characters don't even get to meet until about 4 1/2 hours into the book. This book also has a side story about Ramsey and we get to revisit Ian and Judith with their family. Narration was good, she was easy to listen to.

An English Baron’s Treacherous Reward

I love this book. This is actually the 4th time I’ve read it, this time on Audible. Susan Duerdan is magnificent as the narrator. Her voices are terrific, especially for the main characters and the Highlanders. Truly, she’s portrayed all the men perfectly and equally so the women.

The storyline is wonderfully complex, with mystery, violence, treachery, and mixed with a sprinkling of humor along the way. The heroine is very much a hero in her own right, and once she is rescued by our hero, they make a formidable pair.

Julie Garwood has woven a beautiful story of romance in the midst of a web of deceit and betrayal. I highly recommend this book.

Performance

This performer did an outstanding job on the characters, but the narration was a bit monotone - to the point of distraction.
