Nor can the silver chain at his throat, designed to control the aggression of his kind, completely reassure her that this man has been tamed. Yet when a feral shifter begins to stalk them both, Liam is the only one she trusts with her life. She’ll let him claim her—for her protection, for her pride, and for a passion that knows no bounds.

    "Mixed feelings"

This book had a terrific idea, and I think I would have enjoyed it; if it didn't have such prejudicial overtones. I mean, I get that it was crucial to the story line, but honestly... the heroine spent most of the book complaining about reasons she couldn't be with the hero that sounded (to me) racist against shifters.

"Like they said, narration not so much"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not. I read this after finishing Nalini Singh's psy-changeling series and it just doesn't have the punch that series does. The specifics of this world with Shiftertown and more aggressive animal natures and the civil rights issues of shifters is cool and all, but the romance fell flat, and this is at heart a romance, so...

If you’ve listened to books by Jennifer Ashley before, how does this one compare?

I had tried the Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie but couldn't get into it. This one I finished, so I'd say I like it better. But in general, I prefer PNR to period romance.

Did Traci Odom do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I guess. The narration was fast and made it hard for me to get into the story. I read that this would be an issue, but I wanted to give the series a shot, and since she doesn't narrate the others, I figured I could survive a mediocre narration. Being pre-warned, it was fine.

    Any additional comments?

I didn't NOT like the book, I just didn't think it was great. I'm going to download the second book in the series, since other reviewers mention it gets better, and I'm anal and need to read from the beginning if I'm going to read a series. I can't say if it will have been worth it just yet but I hope the typical stiff first book problems in this are the same that all these series' seem to have and I'll totally love book 2.

    "Slow start, needs some polish"

Narration: It started off sounding like the story was recorded slower than it was played back, so the words were rapping out like bullets, and if there was any minor cadence changes, they got lost in the rapid speaking. Trying to listen on half speed took everything down too slow. However, the narration improved as the book went along, but the start was rocky.

Story: With the exception of my major gripe below, it was an enjoyable listen that could have used a little more polishing.

One of the more difficult things to get right is a world that's somewhat based off of ours. On one hand, it's easier to evoke an image with less words. On the other, if the author fails to provide a decent rational for significant divergences, it makes the whole story harder to enjoy. The level of government discrimination against shifters in this story was one of those unexplained over the top grumbles.

The same social effect could easily have been achieved if the author had used a "right to discriminate" guarantee or something along those lines. Adding in a 20 year time frame to get used to shifters and not having any mention of shifter groupies or other fringe pro-shifter or at least shifter-neutral forces in human society was a failure in world building.

"A different kind of love story"
Would you listen to Pride Mates again? Why?

I had to start this one three times before I got past the very slow start. But after getting into the initial chapters, I found a good story line. I'd probably listen to it in the future, but am looking forward to the rest of the series now.

What other book might you compare Pride Mates to and why?

Suzanne Wright's series Phoenix Pack is along the same lines as this series. Both are a little light on the character development. Though both are good, light listens.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Traci might not have been a good first choice for the narrator, but she did fairly well with the story. Needs work on her Irish accent.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The suspense at the end was by far the best in the book.

    Any additional comments?

This is not my favorite type of book, but once in a while I need a change. This is definitely a change from the normal novel listen.

    "Story = Good/Exciting, Narrator = Bad/Indifferent"

    The good part:
I think this is a good shifter-story. It is a bit different, but in a interesting way. I found that I really liked it very much. Of course for me it is always a +, when a story contains a sexy dominat alpha male, a female, who do not take crap from anybody, romance, action and hot sexy scenes. This story contains all of that and a really intriguing story.

    The bad part:
As I said it is a good story, but the naration is very boring and dissatisfactory. I tried the "sample" and I did think it sounded a bit indifferent, but I thought I could ignore it. I couldn't! The narrator, Traci Odom, made the charactors very uninteresting. It just lacked emotion and was very unimpressive, passive and boring. I only lasted about 10 minutes into the story, then I had to stop.

I was still excited about the story, so I bought the Kindle version and read it myself. I am glad I did it, because it is a good story and very entertaining.

I would definitely recommend the book, but not the audiobook - except if it gets re-released with a new narrator.

    "Pride Mates"

I thought the book was great - it kept me entertained and interested. I read the other reviews and was surprised by some of the feedback on the narrator. I liked the fact that her characterizations did not intrude on my own. Part of what makes a book good to me is that I shape the characters in my mind as the author verbally draws them for me. When the narrator gets too much into "acting" the parts I find it distracts me and breaks up the flow of the story. I guess we all have our preferences.

Overall, I would definitely read another of Ms. Ashley's books and I would definitely listen to another book narrated by Ms. Odom. I thought they made a pretty good team.

"The series is great, but the narrator struggles"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, the whole series is great. I wish the other books were on here as well.

Did Traci Odom do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

She struggled with some of the male voices, and had difficulty inflecting emotion sometimes.

    "Awesome story!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Pride Mates to be better than the print version?

Yes and no. The book tells a wonderful story and keeps you drawn in, but the nararator didn't put as much emotion into her reading as others do.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Pride Mates?

When Liam and his family and mate came together at the end of the book. After everything they had been thru.

What does Traci Odom bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She brings the characters to life, but not with as much emotion as I would like to see in them.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I would have to think on that one. Maybe

    "Good potential, cheesy ending"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Time I don't regret. I enjoyed the unique plot.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The scene where the men were summoned to the leader and the proceeding scene. The least interesting was the ending. It seemed rushed, like she saw the ending and threw it together. There was so much potential than what she gave us.

What three words best describe Traci Odom’s performance?

(I don't want to be mean.) Ordinary, nothing special.

Could you see Pride Mates being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Yes, and I don't know. I don't watch a lot of TV/Movies. The books are better.
