Publisher's Summary

He counts her smiles every day and night at the train station. And morning and evening, the beautiful commuter acknowledges him - just like she does everyone else on the platform. But Blake Hartt is not like the others...he's homeless.

Memories of a broken childhood have robbed him of peace and twisted delusions into his soul. He stays secluded from the sun, sure the world would run from him in the harsh light of day.

Each day, Livia McHugh smiles politely and acknowledges her fellow commuters as she waits for the train to the city. She dismisses this kindness as nothing special, just like her. She's the same as a million other girls - certainly no one to be cherished. But special or not, she smiles every day, never imagining that someone would rely on the simple gesture as if it were air to breathe.

When the moment comes that Livia must do more than smile, without hesitation she steps into the fray to defend the homeless man. And she's surprised to discover an inexplicable connection with her new friend. After danger subsides, their smiles become conversation. Their words usher in a friendship, which awakens something in each of them. But it's not long before their bond must prove its strength.

Entanglements from the past challenge both their love and their lives. Blake's heart beats for Livia's, even if her hands have to keep its rhythm.

Love is patient. Love is kind. Love never fails. Love never fails, right?

In an interwoven tale of unlikely loves and relationships forged by fire, Debra Anastasia takes readers into the darkest corners of human existence, only to show them the radiant power of pure adoration and true sacrifice. Complicated families and confused souls find their way to light in this novel, which manages to be racy, profane, funny, and reverent all at once.

    "Touching Love Story but..."

First of all, the narrator did a wonderful job.
I loved the first half of this book. I would have given it 9 stars until the author seemed to lose her focus mid-way.

Girl meets homeless man, helps homeless man, falls in love with homeless man, homeless man moves in with girl, girl has a bully, psycho ex-boyfriend then the story falls apart. I was so disappointed.

It seemed the story climax was midway, then slid down the mountain with a crescendo, so to speak. Perhaps he story should have ended about two-thirds the way through.

There is a Poughkeepsie #2 due out this year. I am hoping the author will tie up a few dangling characters' futures and elaborate more on the 3 "brothers by choice". I will definitely purchase it.

I do recommend this book because I enjoyed the sweet love story. I admit I did cry as parts were most touching, I laughed and enjoyed the suspense. There were some sexy scenes well done.

It was a good read and worth the credit. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

    "Pulls At Your Heart"

this audiobook pulled me in once I started it, . The McHugh sisters Livia and Kyle, the three brothers Blake, Beckett and Cole. This story is about how people relate to others who are less well off and how cruel they can be, yet others are completely the opposite. It's full of action, suspense and romance. The characters are all broken/torn in some way but they are all strong and proud. I really liked Beckett even if he did scare the s##t out of me.. The narration was good.

    "Wow! Loved everything about it!"
    Any additional comments?

Wow! I LOVED everything about this book! It highlights that the homeless should not be invisible to society. They are human beings that due to circumstances unknown to us forced them to be out in the streets. They could be good people that were dealt a bad hand...like Blake. It was wonderful how the author weaved the story of these three souls who are brothers at heart. I was absolutely riveted and just could not put this down! I can't wait for the sequel!

    "Amazing book, horrid narration"
What made the experience of listening to Poughkeepsie the most enjoyable?

This is such an amazing story. Everything about it kicks convention in the teeth, and I love that. Our main character is not necessarily an Alpha Male, but he is the sweetest, most amaing guy around... and homeless. Livia is a sweet, innocent, badass when she needs to be, understanding woman. She's relatable and likable. And she and Blake together are just... ahhhhh...

What did you like best about this story?

Everything. There is no typical in this book. Everything is unique and twisted from the norm. It's touching, beautiful, and filled with so much emotion!

How could the performance have been better?

I seriously disliked the narration of this book. I use Audible because I listen to the books in my car on my 2 hour daily commute. The speaker whispered many parts (Usually Livia's thoughts) so low that I would CONSTANTLY have to rewind and relisten to parts - not easy to do while driving. And if I turned the volume up to understand the whispering, when her normal tone returned, it was loud as all get out.
I also felt her delivery was off. Sentences were not intoned properly for the content, which left it feeling like someone reading to children at the library. I loved this book so freakin much, but it was because of the tale, not the telling.
I was actually a bit upset at how off so much of the performance was, because I would hate to think that people would not get the full effect and impact of the story because of it's narration. I would actually pay for this book a third time if I could get a different reader... Therese Plummer is fantastic, any way we could get a redo?

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Not your average girl meets not your typical man. Love knows no boundries, restraints, or background.

    Any additional comments?

Please re-record this. This story is powerful, beautiful, and sweet. Performance really matters.

    "Surprised"

I read quite a few reviews before I purchased this book, both on Audible & Amazon. It seemed people either loved the book or didn't. While I will have to listen to the book again to get all the details clear in my head I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I can't think of an emotion this book didn't draw out of me through the journey. I didn't think I would fall in love with the characters in the book but I did. I can't explain what exactly it was about the writing specifically that worked so well for me but I was entertained the entire book.

Perhaps I connected so deeply with this book because I love authors like K'wan and Carl Weber to Maya Banks and Sylvia Day to Kristin Hannah. I felt this book brought so many different writing genre's together that I couldn't help but enjoy the story.

This book will definitely be one I listen to repeatedly and recommend to friends. So if you are ready for a book that is not predictable, highly emotion and action packed this is a great book for you.

    "Great narration!"
Would you try another book from Debra Anastasia and/or Marti Dumas?

I've now tried a couple of books by Debra Anastasia and have come to realize that I lack the ability to appreciate her unique creative voice. I've enjoyed interacting with her online, so I'm really bummed that's the case. I loved Marti Dumas's voice acting, so I would definitely listen to another audiobook narrated by her.

What was most disappointing about Debra Anastasia’s story?

Unfortunately, I think the story kept crossing invisible lines I automatically draw for certain character types and story elements. Or maybe if Poughkeepsie had been edited down to focus more on just Livia and Blake instead of also heavily alternating the focus to Livia's sister, ex-boyfriend, and Blake's foster brothers. 17 hours for one novel is several hours too long for me, but I do credit narrator Marti Dumas for helping me experience more of Poughkeepsie than I did 2 years ago when I gave up 13% into the e-book format.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Sadly, I can't think of one.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I thought the uniqueness of one of the main characters being homeless and a bit delusional was a brave choice.

    Any additional comments?

I love the cover image, and I really liked reading about a heroine who shared my name. I'm sure readers looking for a unique story with an epic feel, sometimes crass humor and a bit of violence similar to that found in MC trope novels may appreciate this series a lot more than I did.

How could the performance have been better?

The character voices were annoying-sounding. I'm not a professional about narration, but I know that something needed to be done differently.

    Any additional comments?

My rating went up and down the entire time with this book. I loved some parts, and some parts were a little off (but not bad). Overall I liked it and will continue with the series. I started with Poughkeepsie Begins, which was a 5 star read for me.

"Love this story but it might not be for everyone"
If you could sum up Poughkeepsie in three words, what would they be?

    Beautiful, Dark, Harsh

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoy the fact that the author doesn't pull any punches. She doesn't try to apologize for her characters. They are what they are and they do what they do. They have reasons and excuses, but no apologies.

Have you listened to any of Marti Dumas’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I think this might be the first time I've heard her. She brings flavor to the story. Her narration fits well with the feel of the book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were many. I think the scene in the clearing was probably the most moving for me.

    "Engrossing Story - Disaster Edition"

I had serious doubt about the story but i'm glad i took the chance on this book.

The bond that ties the main characters - Blake, Beckett and Cole, given their extreme life choices makes me wish for a brother like them. Throw in the loyal Mouse, whose passion for knitting is just the thing of contradictions. There were moments where i cant help guffawing on the author"s personification of Mouse, Beckett, Eve, Kyle and Livia's Dad. Some dialogues are just fun to listen to despite Beckets' needs-to-wash language.

The narrator tried her best which was okay with me, but the edition was disaster. I believe whoever did the edition slept throughout the process.

Nevertheless, i dont regret downloading this book. Just for the story alone - Its between 4 to 5 stars.
