Publisher's summary

When Vicky accidentally slides into the side of a polar bear, she doesn't expect to fall in love. It turns out that the polar bear is a man. A sexy man. A man who growls, roars, and does everything he can to chase her away. Only to come back.

Gene has only one thing on his mind - revenge - until Vicky crashes into his life. After the pain and betrayal he suffered in the war, all he wants is vengeance against the brothers who left him behind. But he's confused when instead of wanting to punish him for his evil acts, they offer him forgiveness.

As if that weren't annoying enough, the cutest geek he ever met won't leave him alone. Or, more accurately, he can't seem to stop following her. And it isn't just because someone is out to hurt her. He wants her. But does he want her more than vengeance?

Love the story, not so sure about the narrator

So this is billed as the anti-hero romance. I disagree, he is flawed but by no means the opposite of a hero. He will deny being a good guy, but actions do not lie.

First, a bit of annoyance, I read this immediately after the last book that had a line about Gene trying to avoid a human trying to tag his bear. However, this book starts with them not knowing each other. It is a small constancy thing that annoyed me greatly.

Gene is all gruff and grumpy damaged bear. Sigh, yeah he had me at hello! I do love the damaged bears who are all Alpha. He has been working on being a villain, turns out he cannot fight his nature, he is a hero to the core. OMG, love his nickname and how he uses it constantly!! PIMA <3

Vicky is very shy and reserved and not at all a tough chick. She is totally endearing and the perfect match for Gene. HE needs someone to care for and she needs his strength to bring her out of herself. I really think they are one of favorite couples in the whole series.

The smexy stuff is delicious and ever so hawt!! Love it! Have ice cream and a cold shower ready!!

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Chandra Skyye, who does very well on the narrative potions of the book. Where I did not enjoy her was the dialogue for the two leads. She tries to go too low and gruff with Gen’s voice and far to nasal and whiny for Vicky. Often she comes off sounding immature because of the narration. This is really too bad, because Ms Skyye has great pace and energy for the other parts of the read. I am not sure how I feel about having her continue with the series. I think she has a great voice, just not enjoying all her artistic choices.

Please let the rest of the series come to audio ASAP!! I can not wait for Brody, so yummy I think!! It is also getting very intriguing with this super secret evil foe!

*** I hope this review was useful to you and helped your decision to read or not read this book. I love reading and sharing my opinions with other readers. I listen at double speed; all my impressions of the narration are from that setting. Thanks for taking the time to read my review! Who knew a pissed off polar bear would be so fun?

“Apparently, someone didn’t get the memo on not pissing Gene off.”
You can currently get this for free in Audible Plus, but it’s yours to keep if you get it in the books 1-3 collection. Each book features shifters who get progressively more growly and feisty ladies. I liked this book 3 best out of the trio, perhaps because between the fluff and stuff there’s some deeper arcs about Gene’s redemption and Vicky rising above domestic abuse. It’s all on the mild side, but listeners should be prepared for treatment of PTSD, POWs and death by gunfire and by beast in each book. There are also a fair number of F bombs in this installment.

Vicky gave me danger-prone-Daphne vibes something fierce, but that was balanced with a dollop of nerdy Velma. The situations tended to be hyperbolically comical, which was great for straight-man
(and all time biggest grump) Gene. Yep, just a big fur ball of sexy, campy fun.

Terrible narration

The story was pretty good. Unfortunately the voices used for the main characters were horrid. Especially for the heroine. She sounded like a simpering child.

Why?

The story would be great and the narrator does tell the story well she just can't do the voices for either H/H. Vicky sounds like 8 year old child who has 0 spine and. gene sounds like he is having a asma attack. honestly some one else needs to narrate the rest of these books , i stopped at chaper 6 after she fainted like 3 times it's just to stupid.

Good story, sketchy narration

The story is good but the narration is way off. The voices for both characters are hard to stand, Gene has a weird false villain voice, and Vicky's voice is too airy and kitten-ish. Vicky's character is also a bit too spineless, even though she's trying to reinvent herself, it just feels like there isn't enough growth. That makes the sex kitten/ helpless damsel voice grate even more.
I only suffered through it because I was invested in Gene's story and wanted to find out what was going on with him after listening to the first two stories.

Sex kitten narrator

I hated the breathy little sex kitten character voice of Vickie. Story was good though.

Fine Story, Atrocious Narrator

I enjoyed the story well enough, but could not for the life of me understand the choices the Chandra Skyye, the narrator, made with the voices for the two main characters. Vicky's voice is whiny and grating and Gene's is laughable. Honestly, I would have preferred Skyye to not even bother with the changes. It really ruins the listening experience. I wouldn't have even finished it if the book were available on Kindle Unlimited for me to read myself instead,

Play-Do Woman

I liked everything but Vickie. The author made her character Play-Do spineless. It was pretty insulting to women everywhere.
