Publisher's summary

Suzanne Brockmann has taken romantic suspense by storm with her action-packed thrillers. Now she has written the most gripping novel of her career - an unforgettable story of an explosive hostage situation in which two people are caught between the call of duty and the lure of destiny.

For Lieutenant Teri Howe, one of the best helicopter pilots in the naval reserves, nothing stands in the way of her passion for flying - until a past mistake surfaces, jeopardizing everything she's worked for.

Senior Chief Stan Wolchonok has made a career of tackling difficult challenges, so it's no surprise when he comes to Teri's aid, knowing that his personal code of honor - and perhaps his heart - will be at risk. But when a jet carrying an American senator's daughter is hijacked, Stan's unflinching determination and Teri's steadfast courage are put to the ultimate test. The rescue mission will be daring and dangerous. But somewhere between peril and resolution, the line between friends and lovers begins to blur, pushing both their lives over the edge.

Violence & Mature Theme

To avoid spoiler alerts, I will say this story deals with some very realistic and unpleasant topics such as terrorism and violence against women. When you start this book, be prepared for a long sit, because the suspense, both romantic and situational, definitely make it a marathon listen. Narrators did an excellent job, as well. Kudos to all!

This is where the series gets truly addictive

If you could sum up Over the Edge in three words, what would they be?

So Many Emotions

Who was your favorite character and why?

It's a tie between Stan and Sam. Stan's protectiveness towards Teri is heartwarming, and his willingness to sacrifice to save others, plus his hints of insecurities about himself endear him to listeners. Then there's Sam's realization that he wants more from Alyssa - when she walks in to find him sobbing, my heart was wrenched from my chest for him. That, along with the conclusion of Sam's story in this particular book left me sobbing.

What about Patrick Lawlor and Melanie Ewbank ’s performance did you like?

Patrick is always great. Melanie is much better in this book than the earlier two.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. All the yes.

Any additional comments?

One thing that was notable about this particular installment in the series was that the book seems to reel listeners in more easily to becoming invested in the rest of the team beyond the main characters; even the tertiary or background folks (see Izzy, Frank, etc). You get glimpses of what makes these folks so valuable to their team, and what their personalities are like, which is neat as you see the stories progress and eventually those characters get to have their own story.

Over The Edge

Love, love, love this story! I love both Teri and Stan's and the secondary story of Helga's childhood. I have read this over and over but this is the first time listening to it. The narrators are great and bring such terrific depth to the characters. What a pleasure to listen to.

On the Edge!!

I quickly got into the story. Since it in an omniscient voice, I connected with the major players in the story almost instantly . I laughed. I cried. I chewed my fingers. I bit my lip. All of my favorite things rolled into one: action, romance, tension, suspense, and humor. The woven story of Helga was brilliant, and I loved that she became a heroine in her own right. This is a definite read for anyone who loves a man in uniform who is tough but has a serious heart of gold.

One of my favs of the series

This is one of my absolute favorites of the Troubleshooters series. Not only am I a huge fan of age gap – I love that both Stan & Teri can’t quite conceive that the other person would be interested in them.

Brockmann is famous for her story within a story and bringing together numerous interesting plot points to a thrilling end. At nearly 16 hours – this is days worth of entertaining and engaging action, suspense, romance, and drama. Weaved through this is a bittersweet love story told in flashback to WWII Denmark and their occupation by Nazi Germany.

Continuing storylines for Sam & Alyssa, Wildcard, Jules, and Max as well as the introduction of characters you’ll be seeing in future books like Gina, MaryLou, Izzy, Gillman, Muldoon, and more.

I cannot say enough fabulous things about Patrick Lawlor and Melanie Ewbank. They are both stellar narrators – voices, accents, emotions, and giving each character their own unique sound. They also have this way of slightly changing their “reading voice” for each character so that it’s unique from that person’s perspective. It is incredibly dynamic and not found in many narrations.

Note: I originally read this. Then I found our library had the original audiobooks of the first 6 books (single narrators, various). THEN! Then the series was rerecorded in Dual Narration style with Patrick Lawlor & Melanie Ewbank. I’m in LOVE with these narrations. I own them all. And if it were possible to wear out digital copies of something, I’d have done it by now.

The one that hit me the most

This is the book in the series that grabbed my emotions the most.
Brockmann does a great job of writing characters that you can identify with and half fall in love with. She also does a great job with multiple storylines in the same book.
You’ve got Sr Chief Stan Wolchonok and Lt Teri Howe in present day; each with their own challenges.
You’ve got Helga Rosen with both her current day challenges and her past challenges from WWII Denmark.
Sam and Alyssa reconnect and learn more about each other, but...
Then there’s the incredible Gina Vitagliano and her interactions with negotiator Max Bhagat. Be ready to have your emotions pummeled and restored.

If interested, Brockmann’s compilation Headed for Trouble has a short story about Frank O’Leary’s visit to his brother in New Orleans ending on a happy note. (Be aware that the other two novellas are set well into the future of the series.)

One part of the story that has remained with me through the years is how Denmark reacted to the Nazi occupation and how they were held accountable for their behavior.

Lawlor does a great job with narration. Ewbank is growing into the series.

A great series -

Started in the middle and have been collecting other episodes ever since. though a series each stands alone. In this and others the author introduces current social dilemmas with sensitivity that raises books from mere romances. The thriller side is taught and keeps attention riveted. A thoroughly good listen!
