Publisher's Summary

In One Dance with a Duke, the first novel in Tessa Dare's delightful new trilogy, secrets and scandals tempt the irresistible rogues of the Stud Club to gamble everything for love.

A handsome and reclusive horse breeder, Spencer Dumarque, the fourth Duke of Morland, is a member of the exclusive Stud Club, an organization so select it has only 10 members - yet membership is attainable to anyone with luck. And Spencer has plenty of it, along with an obsession with a prize horse, a dark secret, and, now, a reputation as the dashing "Duke of Midnight". Each evening he selects one lady for a breathtaking midnight waltz. But none of the women catch his interest, and nobody ever bests the duke - until Lady Amelia d'Orsay tries her luck.

In a moment of desperation, the unconventional beauty claims the duke's dance and unwittingly steals his heart. When Amelia demands that Spencer forgive her scapegrace brother's debts, she never imagines that her game of wits and words will lead to breathless passion and a steamy proposal. Still, Spencer is a man of mystery, perhaps connected to the shocking murder of the Stud Club's founder. Will Amelia lose her heart in this reckless wager - or win everlasting love?

    "Horsing around in Historical Romance"
Would you listen to One Dance with a Duke again? Why?

Definitely, I loved this book, and the very intriguing male characters.

What did you like best about this story?

I Loved the fact the Duke spent a lot of his youth time in Canada, and the description he gives of that time. I'm Canadian, so it's nice to hear nice things about your country.

What does Leslie Bellair bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I loved her voice, she gave such an emotional performance. When she was lecturing the Duke ( very Funny) or when she was trying to help her brother (very vulnerable)

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I felt myself trying to sneek a quick listen at work..It wasn't easy!

    Any additional comments?

    I really can't wait for Bellemy's story.

    "Strong characters, clever dialogue"
What did you love best about One Dance with a Duke?

I loved how there was so much more to both the Duke and to Amelia than there appeared to be upon first acquaintance. These were very well developed characters with believable problems. I enjoyed getting to know them.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Ms. Bellair has a pleasant voice. However, it felt more like I was listening to a friend read aloud to me than I was listening to a professional narrator. She was not able to give distinct voices to the characters, so I had to go back a number of times a listen again to make sure I understood the dialogue correctly. I would have been more aggravated about this had I not purchased the book in one of those surprise, pop-up $4.95 sales. The story and characters were strong enough to hold up against the amateur narration, but if narration style is really important to you, I would suggest buying this book on sale. Like I said, Ms. Bellair's voice was pleasant; I enjoyed the sound of it. I hope she works on developing her craft, especially distinctions in character voice, because she has the potential to be an excellent, five-star narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I wish I could have. Stupid daily responsibilities.

    Any additional comments?

Ms. Dare gave the characters occasional, short bursts of inner monologue that I found quirky and funny. The characters knew themselves and their own foibles. This technique of sharing their shortcomings made it very easy to relate to the characters. Haven't we all berated ourselves in our own head for saying the wrong thing -- yet again? Or behaving according to a bad habit -- as always -- despite the promises we've made to ourselves? (Oh god, perhaps it is only me. Maybe I've made an idiot of myself for all of Audible.com to read. Probably most people don't second-guess everything they share on the internet, even a simple book review. Why do I even write these things anyway? They are never helpful to anyone, I'm sure. And there I go thinking in absolute terms again, even though I promised myself I wouldn't. This is silly & ridiculous. Pull it together, woman! Just roll your eyes at yourself one last time, click 'preview' and 'submit', and be done with it.)

"Loves the horse that's for sure."

I cant say I really cared for this book too much. Had a hard time getting passed the loving the horse so much. I think the story itself was pretty boring, The characters were decent enough but the story was just lacking. The book started out pretty decent and caught my attention for the first few chapters then it went down hill from there. I have read a couple Tessa Dare books and have enjoyed them, this one not so much. The narrator was decent except the way she did the voice of Spencer was a bit to high pitched for a hero. Not the best book by far, I was glad to get it on sale and only paid 4.95 for it. There are many more books on audible to listen too don't waste your credit.

    "Great romance"

I did enjoy the telling of "One Dance With a Duke." For those of us who enjoy the occasional romance, this was a lovely story and telling. I will admit that even I was slightly annoyed by the main characters constant "misunderstanding" of her love interested, but overall enjoyed the story and would recommend it to other readers who enjoy a light-hearted romance. I think I will continue with the series.

This was another book I got on sale so I wasn't expecting much. Boy was I wrong. This is a great beginning to this series. It was funny with some twists and turns that kept me interested. I though the narrator did a good job too. I will listen to the next in the series.

"Why didn't I know about Tessa Dare?"

I have listened to, and read, tons of historical romance novels by lots of different authors. I can't believe this is the first Tessa Dare book I've been exposed to. It had a real story. The heroine, Amelia, is smart and witty and loving. Her hero, Spencer, is handsome, brooding and fiercely enamoured of Amelia, much to his own surprise.

The narration, by Leslie Bellaire, was spot on. I was a little hesitant at first. Ms Bellaire sounds very young. But her narration was perfect for this book.

I wait with anticipation for Audible to obtain more of Tessa Dare's books.

This is my first review. But I felt so strongly positive about this book that I wanted to tell others of my experience. Take a chance on authors you might not be familiar with. You might sometimes suffer disappointment. You won't, however, be disappointed with this book.

"GOOD STORY - VERY CREDIT WORTHY"

Great start to a trilogy series. I thought the story was most entertaining but I thought the narrator sounded very young for the story. However, I did get into her voice the longer I listened to her because I liked the plot so much.

Will download the other books in the series but I hope they use a different narrator.

    "just ok"

I absolutely love period novels however I was a bit disappointed with this as it was very long winded in places and lacked character insight and background. Amelias character is empowering and represents the strength of a woman. But the other main character Spencer is quite misleading. He starts of as having one set of characteristics and by the end of the book you feel as if you don't really know him.
