No One Lives Twice | [Julie Moffett]

No One Lives Twice

"I'm Lexi Carmichael, geek extraordinaire. I spend my days stopping computer hackers at the National Security Agency. My nights? Those I spend avoiding my mother and eating cereal for dinner. Even though I work for a top-secret agency, I've never been in an exciting car chase, sipped a stirred (not shaken) martini, or shot a poison dart from an umbrella. Until today, that is, when two gun-toting thugs popped up in my life and my best friend disappeared."

"Until today, that is, when two gun-toting thugs popped up in my life and my best friend disappeared. So, I've enlisted the help of the Zimmerman twins - the reclusive architects of America's most sensitive electronic networks - to help me navigate a bewildering maze of leads to find her.

"Along the way, my path collides with a sexy government agent and a rich, handsome lawyer, both of whom seem to have the hots for me. Hacking, espionage, sexy spy-men - it's a geek girl's dream come true. If it weren't for those gun-toting thugs...."

    "Delightful!"

Thoroughly engaging heroine! A woman with a brain who takes charge. I loved it.

    "Love It!"

Great story, well paced, well narrated. It was serious in the right places and funny when appropriate. The espionage is light but not in a bad way. I don't like overdone romance and this had just enough to keep things interesting without being over the top. This was a fun listen and I can't wait for more by this author, hopefully continuing the characters in this story.

"Good Story Line- Narrator is not THAT bad"
What made the experience of listening to No One Lives Twice the most enjoyable?

I liked the narration. She did do a really bad Italian accent, but I thought her voice was pleasant and easy to listen to- the other accents were GREAT!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked that Lexi could laugh at herself.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

As above the performance was GREAT except for the Italian accent.... It sounded a little more like Dracula... but otherwise I thought she did a good job

    "OK story, really bad accents"

The story is OK, not very deep and I would like it to be more about hacking than how inept she is around people. The narrator is fine with Lexi's dialog, but when she tries to do accents, they are so bad (especially Italian) that it is distracting from the story.

Anglophile. Prefer only British fiction and mysteries. Good translations of Italian, too.

    "Reader ruined any chance"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who likes a reader with too much saliva and a bad concept of timing, enunciation, pronunciation and general charm.

Would you ever listen to anything by Julie Moffett again?

    No.

How could the performance have been better?

If someone clever had been hired. The prose is not bad. I keep trying to find "good" american authors. With the right voice, this could have been zippy and entertaining.

What character would you cut from No One Lives Twice?

The reader who is not a character but who ruins the book. I could not finish the book.

    Any additional comments?

I feel sorry for this promising author to be saddled with such an awful reader.

"Ug....another book ruined by bad narration"

Th narrator is just SO bad that it's overshadowing any good that this book might have been. She's is a slow talking, over-enunciator, who is making everything sound cheesy with her over-the-top "harlequin" voice. I get that this is a categorized as a Harlequin production, but if she could just read it like a normal person, it could read like cute heroine, chick lit. She's also a saliva-heavy reader....ug.

I've listened to hundreds of audiobooks and I've learned that narration is 80% of the experience, at least. I'd like my credit back, please.

    "Fun"

These stories have a little bit of everything. Mystery, romance, action, adventure, cops and robbers. I think the author wrote a great series and it's nice to read and listen to a story without vulgarities. I can listen to it in the car with worrying about who is on the car with me.

    "A geek girl's misadventure"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Perhaps it appeals more to teen and/or preteen girls.

What was most disappointing about Julie Moffett’s story?

It put me to sleep several times while listening during mid day.

How could the performance have been better?

I did not find it interesting, but it would have been improved had it held my attention for more than brief, sporadic intervals. The narration could have been improved by using more realistic accents and something other than a stacato vocal presentation. This may have been a better read than it was as a listening experience.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    The plot was marginally intriguing.

"Fun read - but the narrator is notta so gud!"

This is a light hearted spy book with some fun, interesting characters - but the narrator ruins the experience. She sounds like she is mocking an Italian accent - speaks too slowly and with an exaggerated, comedic tone whenever the Italian character is speaking. It brought to mind an old Alka-Seltzer commercial with an old Italian man who needed an antacid because "thata wasa spicy meat-a-ball-a". Insulting then, insulting now.

I enjoyed everything else about the book - the plot had a great twist at the end - and an original premise. I loved the Keystone Cops ending. What a shame that the narration ruined so much of it. Still worth a credit, or a purchase if it's on sale, only because the story is that good. But I hope Slash doesn't have too many scenes in the rest of the series.

    "entertaining , funny"

I throughly enjoyed this book. it was light and is to listen and to hear all the goofy plot line . my only complaint is on the mispronounced word, hadn't . the reader always mispronounced as hat-ent . it made me cringe everytime. other than that, I really enjoyed it . it reminded me of Lucy and Ethel's crazy antics.made me laugh more than a few times.
