Publisher's summary

Lord Ferdinand Dudley is accustomed to getting what he wants... that is, until he appears at the door of Pinewood Manor, attempting to claim his rightful estate, and is met by the bewitching fury of Lady Viola Thornhill. She refuses to cede him the home she calls her own. He refuses to leave. So the contest begins. Each day under the same roof brings its share of frustration... and temptation. But Viola knows it is a battle she cannot afford to lose. Marriage is out of the question, and she will be no man’s mistress, even as Dudley’s unnerving presence threatens to melt her resolve. Against his better judgment, Lord Ferdinand Dudley is beguiled. This maddening beauty has stirred him as no woman had before. And now he is bound and determined to make her his own.

Balough at her best

Rosalind Landor gives her usual high-quality narration to Book 2 in the Dudley "Mistress" series. Both Book 1 and Book 2 were delightful listening on thirty-minute-long sprints. Balough fans who haven't had a chance to listen to Ms. Landor are missing a treat. With Book 3 (Angeline's story) now written, I purchased it on audio before finishing this one. Forewarning: we have a different narrator for Book 3, but that makes since to me since it's Angie's tale, rather than her once-wild brothers. Looking forward to it tomorrow.

I enjoyed this story. Great break after a stressful day at work. Nothing too serious!

Pretty good story

Any additional comments?

But it went on too long. The first book in the series was better. In this second book I did not get as attached to the main characters and things wound up a little too conveniently at the end. Narrator was good.

Mixed bag

The hero in this story is surprisingly the inexperienced one and is incredibly likable. However, the main female character is annoying. I get what the intention was with her story arc but there were so many times I felt frustrated with her it made the story difficult to listen to. Overall worth the listen.

I ended up being THEIR “champion” by the end

I was pleasantly surprised with these characters and the somewhat unique storyline which snuck up on me and had me being THEIR “champion” by the end. Well done Mary and I love Rosalyn’s performances.

Not my favorite, but still good

I did some skipping and then going back on this one because I felt the battle between the two main characters at the beginning was a little slow and not totally necessary. I did go back and listen to most of the skipped portions and eventually relistened to several portions, thus the rating. I get frustrated at times with the characters’ failure to communicate, but then remember the context in both time period and status and it all makes sense. If you are a Balogh fan you’ll enjoy the usual scene where the villain gets at least a bit of his comeuppance and the HEA and characters from other books in the series make a welcome appearance. The narration is it’s usual great addition so much that I almost couldn’t handle the Dudley’s sister. Ms Landor does her to her hyperactive extreme.

Sweet and nice

I had the flue when I listened to this. The the story was very sweet. The heroine a little pigheaded but that's the tension of the story. The story was strong enough to keep me from feeling sorry for myself.
