On the eve of World War II, two people are brought together by fate and discover an unexpected passion.
Will drifts into Whitney, Georgia, one lazy afternoon in the summer of 1941, dragging his lonely past behind him. All he asks is for a chance to love. Then he sees Elly's classified ad for a husband, and when he steps across Elly's cluttered yard, Will knows he has come home at last.

I heard the original recording, from cassette - not only is this an incredible story from one of the masters of romance, but Kate Forbes' narration is brilliant, spot-on, and in every way one of the top romance audiobooks. Her performance is phenomenal. Mesmerizing. Perfection. It's been out of print and impossible to find for years - Get this audiobook now!
Buy and Listen NOW!! Kate Forbes is absolutely stunning performing my all time favorite LaVyrle Spencer book. I've waited / begged for years for it to come to Audible after listening to the original cassette tapes. Thank You Audible!
I'm an unabashed fiction fan: mostly M/M, Romance, Erotica, Suspense, Thrillers, Action, NA/YA genres.
When I saw the unabridged audio book was available I was over the moon! Kate Forbes narrates this story splendidly. Emotion, tone, pacing, accents...everything was wonderfully done.
I first bought this book (an actual paper copy) in 1989. This is one I own both in paperback and e-copy that I re-read several times a year. God, I love this book. Will Parker and Eleanor Dinsmore both have an amazing amount of vulnerability and strength.
The story itself is brilliantly woven and, even after 25 years, and countless rereading, it's still in my top five.
The narrator doesn't miss a beat with this and the story is simple, straightforward and so well done. I had forgotten about how well i liked this movie - and so when i saw this on Audible I didn't hesitate to purchase it - I wasn't disappointed. This narrator is perfect for Will and Ellie and for me, though the end was a forgone conclusion, there was no boredom, I couldn't quit listening. Ms. Spencer writes in an almost lyrical fashion - it is just beautifully done from beginning to end - and I found myself tearing up a few times. Thank you Audible for adding this to the collection, the audio was long over due!!!!
