Publisher's summary

In this captivating novel, Mary Balogh, the premier writer of Regency romance, invites you into a world of scandal and seduction, of glittering high society and intrigue, as an arrogant duke does the unthinkable - he falls in love with his mistress.

She raced onto the green, desperate to stop a duel. In the mêlée, Jocelyn Dudley, Duke of Tresham, was shot. To his astonishment, Tresham found himself hiring the servant as his nurse. But Jane Ingleby was far too bold for her own good. Her blue eyes were the sort a man could drown in - were it not for her impudence. She questioned his every move, breached his secrets, touched his soul. When he offered to set her up in his London town house, love was the last thing on his mind.

Jane tried to pretend it was strictly business, an arrangement she was forced to accept in order to conceal a dangerous secret. Surely there was nothing more perilous than being the lover of such a man. Yet as she got past his devilish façade and saw the noble heart within, she knew the greatest jeopardy of all, a passion that drove her to risk everything on one perfect month with the improper gentleman who thought love was for fools.

More than expected

His Grace Jocelyn Dudley, enough rake to sweep the sea of autumn leaves, is inexorably entwined with Lady Jane Ingleby when they meet in a most unusual way. How these two work their way to romance is the charm of this story. Another great pairing of author and narrator.

meh

Would you try another book from Mary Balogh and/or Rosalyn Landor?

I might try the author again but not the narrator

What did you like best about this story?

It's a typical corn ball romance

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She made the hero sound like a dowdy old English person. I've heard female narrators do a very convincing male voice, but this woman was so incredibly distracting to listen to. I picture an old wrinkly English man as the hero now. Thanks.

Did More than a Mistress inspire you to do anything?

Yeah, puke.

Annoying heroine

I love MB but could not feel for Jane. Her indignant and harsh ways to Jocelyn got old very fast. The premise was that she was the only one who could put him in his place but she ended up sounding cold and annoying. She wasn’t as well developed as other heroines. I wish she had had more moments of laughter and tenderness, and more depth.

Jocelyn was a much more enjoyable character.

That said I kept listening and still enjoyed the book, although I feel it could have been shorter.

Enjoyable listen

The name and cover make this seem like a different type of book. There's sexy scenes, but the story is a "page turner". Great book. Worth the time and money!

Reviews complaining about the narrator are blasphemy!! Rosalyn Landor is a pro for historical romance!! She's fantastic and narrates most of the truly excellent novels of the genre.

Adored this very clever and well-written story

How fun this was - i did not want it to end. Excellent character development, perfect witty rake, good twists and turns to the story - worth a credit for sure. just make sure you dont have anything else better to do once you start - difficult to put down!

Pleasantly Surprised

I honestly had no expectations for this book. I had only ever read one Mary Balogh book and had never listened to one.
Rosalyn did a fair job; better than many but not as good as quite a few.
This book had a solid plot, some of which I saw coming long before it occurred and quite a bit more that surprised me but fit right in where and when needed. I will definitely read the next book in this series. I laughed quite a bit. The sarcasm that the hero expelled was the surprise and I loved every bit of it.
