Audible Editor Reviews

What's sexier than a thick, hunky lumberjack? What about a thick, hunky undercover cop pretending to be a lumberjack? In Midnight Run Lisa Marie Rice indulges this steamy fantasy for us by describing Claire Parks' (a shy virgin!) tumultuous relationship with Lieutenant Tyler "Bud" Morrison. Alexandra R. Joseph's performance is sensual and arousing. Her presentation of sex scenes has all of the warmth and care of "Bud" himself. Joseph is also able to capture Claire Park's sharp intelligence and wry observations.

After a weekend of the hottest sex he's ever had, he's definitely keeping this one. When trouble comes her way, he pulls out all the stops to protect her. Except Claire doesn't want Bud at her back. She wants him in her bed.

    "a wild ride"

This story was a great escape from reality. It was hard hitting and real at times and fun and flirty at others. Rice’s intimate and visual descriptions keep you deeply entrenched in the story. And the story itself was extremely well put together. By flipping from hot and racy scenes to suspense to relationship problems Rice keeps you on your toes and I loved every second of it.

The female lead in this tale was absolutely priceless. The male was an over the top alpha that you’ve just got to love. The author actually highlights the differences by the main characters not simply through description but also through the markedly different writing styles that she uses for each of them. The stark contrast between the two was remarkable.

I quite enjoyed the narrator for this tale. She really portrayed the emotion of the story. The voice overs at various points in this story became quite apparent at times, especially if listening to the novel via earphones. It was just enough to break the flow of the story.

Overall, this was a brilliant introduction to this exciting author. I appreciated how it could be read as a standalone novel without any missing pieces or without leaving you hanging for a sequel.

"Pretty good addition to the series. :D"

    3.5-4 stars

This was a pretty good story. I liked both Claire and Bud and although I had my frustrations with them both, I was happy to see them together in the end.

Claire Parks is an heiress and has led a very tough but sheltered life. She was born to older parents that coddled and loved her and with her health being delicate, Claire wasn't allowed out much. Once she hit 13 they found out she had leukemia. It took years of treatment after treatment but she pulled through them all even when everyone was convinced that she was one step away from death. Claire has been sickness free for 5 years and is ready to live her life. She got her own house and a new job and decides to go out to a bar with a new friend to have some fun. Unfortunately her friend isn't very reliable and leaves her stuck at the bar with no ride and men that wont take no for an answer.

Tyler Morrison (aka Bud) is a police officer and didn't have an easy childhood. He was a victim of a bad home life as a kid but raised himself above that to become a soldier in the Army and then a respected officer of the law. Bud has never found a woman that's touched him (emotionally) and is kind of a man-whore when he meets Claire. He sees her as a princess and not his normal type...but yet he can't seem to get the rest of his body to go along with what his brain tells him and he stays where normally he'd go.

Claire is at a club and has been ditched by her friend when she meets Bud. A jerk isn't taking Claire's no for an answer when Bud (who is there undercover) comes over to help her. Realizing she's stuck there with no ride, Bud proceeds to take her home. He doesn't intend to take things any further but can't resist when she asks him in for a drink once they get to her place. Once he does take her up on her invite, Bud keeps encountering things that should make him run but he can't make himself go. Bud and Claire end up having a wonderful (and sex filled) weekend together before real life comes calling. Before this happens, Claire and Bud have completely fallen for each other (yes, it's kind of an insta-love situation). Real life shows up in the form of her father, which also makes Bud realize who he's involved with (he didn't realize just who Claire was as far as her family's money and position in the city goes).

Bud ends up at dinner with Claire and her father and is worried that her father will try to chase him off as not good enough for his daughter. I liked the way Bud handled her father and made himself clear on his intentions towards Claire. Things turn out pretty well with the discussion with Claire's father but unfortunately, when Bud finds out about how sick she used to be he becomes more a nanny than a lover. Claire is completely gone on Bud but isn't very happy when he starts coddling her (and I can completely understand her frustration...I think I would have punched Bud in the "sneeze" situation). One of the reasons she moved out on her own was because he father never stopped coddling her and now Bud wont stop either. The main problem is that Bud doesn't listen very well and Claire's not very good at being confrontational. When things finally come to a head and Claire's had it, she breaks things off with Bud in anger and Bud doesn't do very well at listening. They both make errors in their actions and end up alone and miserable because of it. Fortunately, friends that are worried about them arrange things to make them cross paths which might not have done the trick but some drama pops up just about that time and the danger causes a reassessment of priorities. In the end, Bud and Claire are together and while they need to talk some stuff out, they're ready to start their HEA.

This was an enjoyable story. I liked both Claire and Bud and was happy to see them work things out. My only wish was that the story would have maybe included them talking things out in the end. You know they'll work things out and they wont let things split them up again but you don't get to see it which I found a little frustrating. Still, overall I really liked the story and plan to read book #3. I'd recommend this book. :)

"Not as good as first, I agree."
If you could sum up Midnight Run in three words, what would they be?

    I fast forwarded.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Most interesting was the beginning. Least interesting was the middle and last parts.

What about Alexandra R. Josephs’s performance did you like?

Alexandra was great. Really narrator was good.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    Never Ending Story.

    Any additional comments?

First book was good. Hope the Third is better than this one. There were times I felt the story but it did drag a bit.

This one was hard to review as i actually loved the concept of the story and characters. In saying this, i enjoyed the start and slowly started getting annoyed with the intensely continual drawn out detail of the characters emotions/thoughts that seemed to go on and on, with the female smarting over being protected and not asked for her opinion, parts were good but i just felt flat through most of it and the ending was quick and over. Shame as it would have been a great series if more dynamic and fast.

    "No Better"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Anyone that cares nothing about the story but enjoys all the descriptive sex scenes

What do you think your next listen will be?

Unfortunately the 3rd book in the series I bought all 3 and hoping each time I get a glimpse of the Ghost Ops books that I liked

Would you listen to another book narrated by Alexandra R. Josephs?

    yes

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story could have gone so much further.

    Any additional comments?

No I pretty much said it all in in the review of book 1

"Not as good as #1, but still good"

This book had a lot going for it...there were hot scenes, adventure, drama, and it totally drew you in from minute one. There was a lot I didn't like though, but overall I am still recommending it.

The female lead was a *gasp* a virgin....I know, I know, but at least there was a semi plausible reason for it. It was an insta-love book...in a weird way. The hot scenes were great, but then we had to endure contrived drama and I really hate it when a writer does that. I didn't find the dramatic divide plausible, hence the 3 stars for the story.

I did really like that we heard a bit more about John and Suzanne, so that was nice. And I did like the idea that some people are just meant to be.

The plot was basically that Claire has led a pretty secluded life so she goes out to a seedy nightclub to start her adult life...gets into some trouble and She meets Bud, her night in shinning armor. Boy meets girl, boy likes girl, boy and girl are meant to be, but that's too short a book so there is some filler.

Still like the writing and series enough to get book 3 in the series, and I'm really happy with it so far...and as of this posting this book is under $4, there is no reason not to get this book. It takes place both before and after book 1...so don't think the order is messed up, this is book 2.

"3.5 ENJOYABLE YES, BUT SADLY NOT VERY EXCITING"

After listening to book 1 I was expecting so much more from this second instalment but the first half seemed a bit unbelievable. Yes, it was a hot listen as Bud, a sexy, handsome Alpha cop rescues Claire, a naive, beautiful, sweet virgin who's not at all street smart or worldly, from a sleazy Bar and drives her home for a weekend of pure sex (which got repetitive) and food, but I wanted more interaction between them….. of the verbal kind.

There was a lot of internal dialogue from them both but the 'normal' type conversation between two lovers during the 'down' time which results in tender sharing moments was missing and there didn't seem to be many romantic scenes - they just made good use of his "unearthly penis"!! However, in Part 2 the plot picked-up as we're introduced to her Father, hear of her health plight from the past, the past connection between them both and there's a murder, kidnapping threat and a Jewel heist. But Bud became too domineering and over protective which smothered Claire and reminded her of things from her past and so she grew a backbone and rebelled against it which broke both their hearts.

Worth a credit? It's at a WOW price of just $3.95 and well worth it and the plot cleverly interweaved with book 1 and updated us on it's characters so, IMHO it was a good, but sadly, just not a great listen. I downloaded all 3 books together so when I'm in the mood I'll move on to Book 3 and, if this had been a more expensive listen then I would have bought it - and YES, overall, I would have found it creditworthy.
