Publisher's Summary

Lord Lucas Stokehurst is captivated by the gentle grace and regal beauty of “Miss Karen Billings”, who appeared seemingly out of nowhere and now stands demurely before him. Enchanted, the gallant, haunted widower impetuously offers her a position as governess to his young daughter, taking the lady of mystery into his home.

But “Miss Billings” has another name, Anastasia, and a dark past that pursues her still. Condemned for a crime she cannot remember, she barely escaped the gallows. And now she seeks shelter in the arms of a man devastated by tragedy, a man who must now defy society and the forces of vengeance to keep his lady safe and their bold new love alive.

"Read this before Prince of Dreams!"

I made a mistake and listened to Prine of dreams first which was fine as these novels can stand alone. It would have been so much better to listen in order. This book was amazing. Luke is the classic hero that has lost so much and only Tasia can heal his broken heart. The characters feel similar to Mr. Rochester and Jayne Eyre but this novel is not written in the same style. I love this genre, but this is definitely a "grown-up" version delving deeper into the private behind doors moments. Kleypas, as always, makes her charaters shine. One I will listen to again and again!

"KLEYPAS AND DUERDEN - WHAT A LOVELY COMBO"

This is book 1 and Prince of Dreams is book 2 - for your total enjoyment listen to them in order - but they could be a stand alone listen.

It's what you expect from L.K. - strong characters who are entangled in an interesting plot, lots of romance, slight sex scenes and, of course, a handsome hero - ahhhh what more can we ask for whilst doing the housework?

Worth a credit? If you like a Victorian romance then it's a must have (along with book 2 of course).

"Excellent vocalization of characters by S. Duerden"
    Any additional comments?

This is my second audible BOGO title -- an older Kleypas historical that I've never gotten around to reading.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, even though it is not up to the standards of Kleypas's later titles. The lovers fall into the sack rather quickly, and the dramatic plots twists are not so very dramatic and are resolved quickly and cleanly.

Susan Duerden is a new narrator to me, and I have mixed feelings. She did an outstanding job voicing the characters. Tasia's Russian accent was not laid on too thick, and her male voices were all excellent. She has a narration style, however, that annoys me, and I'm not sure that I can adequately describe it. When coming to the end of a sentence, she raises the pitch of her voice, whereas a more natural style is to lower it. (?)(help me out here, Caz, is 'pitch' the right word) This results in an almost sing-song style and adds a tone of, I dunno, urgency to every sentence. This is the same style that drove me nuts listening to Angela Dawe's presentation of Jennifer Ashley's Mackenzie stories, one of my favorite HR series.

There is a sequel that I haven't read, and I expect that I'll listen to it. The hero is Prince Nicholas, who is the villain in this story. It's always fun to watch how that happens.

    "Exceptional Narration and Story"

I had read this novel years ago and enjoyed it but I was still surprised by how the quality of the narration could really draw me back into the story. The narrator does an exceptional job with the male and female voices and the related accents. Also, she captures the tone and historical atmosphere of the novel. I was dazzled and look forward to following up on this story with the sequel, Prince of Dreams.

"My most favorite Lisa Kleyas book to date"

Hmmmm. This was a delicious story and the story was so engaging that I had to stay up to finish it. I absolutely could not put this down even though I knew I could pay for it the next day. Well worth it. The love was well developed, the story built strongly and the characters are people I wish I knew in my lifetime. I highly highly recommend this book for those historical romance lovers.

"Not a fan of LK's early work."
    Any additional comments?

I am a big LK fan and was very surprised in how much I disliked this book.

The story is about a young Russian Aristocratic lady that gets sentenced to death for a crime she did not commit. She escapes to England where she ends up as a governess for a wealthy man's 14 year old child.
My main issue was with the male lead. The man, Lord Stokehurst, is widowed and has lost one arm, in a heroic attempt to save his late wife. That made his, of course, stronger and more detached, which I accepted. However, throughout the book, he was shown as heartless, unfair, manipulative and flat out constantly aroused. The worst thing of all, Anastasia's age, 18, (which you could tell she was this young from her actions), was too close for comfort to his daugther's age. I kept telling Anastasia to run as far away from him as possible. She didn't and he seduced her before they were even married. Sorry. I really didn't feel this one.

Lisa Kleypas' later work (e.g. The Hathaways) is far superior to this early book.

    "Just ok for me..."

This wasn't my favorite Lisa Kleypas book. I guess the fact that the heroine is just 18 years old and the hero is 34 didn't do it for me. I know it happened a lot back then but I like my heroines over 21. The hero was very much an alpha male and I didn't see the build up of the romance as the author usually delivers. It was an ok historical romance for me but not one that I wanted to listen to in one day. Tante narration was ok too. Didn't really like the Russian accent she did though.

    "Just OK for me.."
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yeah, get rid of about 100 pages. Too wordy without saying anything new.

If you’ve listened to books by Lisa Kleypas before, how does this one compare?

Never listened before but I will try another book.

Which character – as performed by Susan Duerden – was your favorite?

Lucas.. Stasia was a little too wimpy for me.

Could you see Midnight Angel being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    Not really..

    Any additional comments?

Lucas and Stasia were just too...too boring sometimes. And the book seemed to go on and on without going anywhere. Too long and wordy at times. This is my first book by LK so I won't judge all her books by this one. I will listen to more.
The narrator was great but the book, not so much.

"missed on all counts with this one"

I love Ms. Kleypas's books, they are a fun listen and her narrator Ms. Landor is great in telling her stories however not this time. Usually her characters are lovable especially the over bearing dominant males of her stories but the two main charcaters in this book were flat and really uninteresting and the story left a lot to be desired.
Susan Duerden is no where near as talented a narrator as is Ms Landor, I found it necessary to turn the volume down as the Russian accent with its harsh syllables began hurting my ears. Don't waste your credit.
