Publisher's summary

Andie Miller is ready to move on with her life. She wants to marry her fiancé and leave behind everything in her past, especially her ex-husband, North Archer. But when Andie tries to gain closure with him, he asks one final favor of her. A distant cousin has died and left North the guardian of two orphans who have driven away three nannies already, and things are getting worse. He needs someone to take care of the situation, and he knows Andie can handle anything....

When Andie meets the two children, she realizes the situation is much worse than she feared. Carter and Alice aren’t your average delinquents, and the creepy old house where they live is being run by the worst housekeeper since Mrs. Danvers. Complicating matters is Andie’s fiancé’s suspicion that this is all a plan by North to get Andie back. He may be right, because Andie’s dreams have been haunted by North since she arrived at the old house. And that’s not the only haunting....

Then her ex-brother-in-law arrives with a duplicitous journalist and a self-doubting parapsychologist, closely followed by an annoyed medium, Andie’s tarot card–reading mother, her avenging ex-mother-in-law, and her jealous fiancé. Just when Andie’s sure things couldn’t get more complicated, North arrives to make her wonder if maybe this time things could just turn out differently....

Finished it too fast

I have missed the "just Jennifer" books - Books that she has written with other authors are OK, but I prefer the ones she writes by herself.

Really enjoyed the book - it is not the best of the ones she has written but still very good. The narrator is excellent.

Decent....

It's not Crusie's best, but definitely not her worst either. She's at her best when she focuses on the relationships between the characters, which she kind of does here but the plot was a little too thin.

Great story, Great Characters...

Great characters, interesting complicated story, but I just can't get into these paranormal stories. The romance is believable, the characters real, even the ghosts and that part of the story is well written, but it ends with two more good ghosts joining them and left me feeling defeated -they and the poor kids will never be free of ghosts even after the powerful struggle they went through to rid themselves of the evil ghosts they had finally sent on to the afterlife. Great story -I just don't get the romance of the whole paranormal thing.

Not just more of the same

I actually bought this book by accident, but I liked the author already and thought why not.
I had expected more of the same from her... Guy and girl meet, hate each other, have sex, and get engaged within a month of meeting. That seems to be how all the others go. They aren't particularly clever in story line, but entertaining in writing style and kind of funny, so I read them.
This one had more. There was a plausible ghost story/ possible psycotic episode mixed into the inevitable month long love story based on good sex. There were even a couple of plot twists I didn't see coming from several chapters back (again, the love story was not one of those). The writing was good and the characters were funny. They were a lot like many of her other characters though- she, a somewhat loose cannon of a woman, he an uptight yuppie controlled by his Mommy Dearest mother, still fun enough for what they are.
The narration was adequate, but nothing more.

loved it, loved it, loved it!!!!

This book/story was what i have been looking for for a good long while. Absolutely loved the characters and though every single one of them had their place and were much needed. This story has it all... romance, scares, suspense, intrigue. I was caught from the very beginning and couldn't wait to find out what happened to everyone and how they got there. Near the end it seemed to drag a little bit, but it was soooo worth the time, Very enjoyable!!! I would recommend this book to every single one of my friends because it was just that good and the narrator did an awesome job!!!

Great pairing of author and reader

I thought this book was great! I don't generally like ghost stories, but this was an exception. The plot held together, and the characters were realistic. Angela Dawe is a super reader - I think she pegged every character with her voice. Worth listening to more than once.

Fun story, would listen again

This is a fun listen, though it should be noted that this book does not bring a realistic storyline or characters. But if you willingly suspend your sense of what is supposed to be, and what real has to be, it makes this book a good time.
It is a well written book with a lot of good quips and quirky characters. I truly enjoyed the plot of abandoned children and a haunted house, with the background of a lasting love. The young girl and boy will break your heart and the obvious and overused extended family help ease the main characters development.
I really liked the narrator. Most of the characters had distinct and natural voices, that made it a pleasure to listen to, although a few were slightly grating. I chose this book based on the narrator, as i really enjoyed her in Brenda Novak trilogy.

My First Crusie

This was my first Jennifer Crusie book. I wasn't sure I would like it but a friend suggested I give it a try. I found it thoroughly enjoyable. Fun characters, action packed story that kept me guessing. I will be sure to give more of her books a try.
