Publisher's summary

She set men's hearts on fire and scandalized a country.

An ambitious, stunning, and seductive young woman, Mary Anne finds the single most rewarding way to rise above her station: She will become the mistress to a royal duke. In doing so, she provokes a scandal that rocks Regency England.

A vivid portrait of sex, ambition, and corruption, Mary Anne is set during the Napoleonic Wars and based on Daphne du Maurier's own great-great-grandmother.

Beautifully done

I've been a fan of du Maurier's Rebecca, so I took a chance on purchasing Mary Anne. So glad I did...now I'm hooked on Daphne du Maurier, and I can't wait to get another book. Beautifully performed by Carole Boyd..great vocals for both men and women as well as accents.

Excellent in all categories

A great read for Anglophiles and lovers of period pieces. Have read the other well known works by the author. Now will read more of the lesser known works. Will seek out pieces by the narrator- she's wonderful.

A woman's got to make a living!

This novel is based on DuMauriers great grandmothers life. She was very good at getting what she wanted by nanipulation especially getting men under her spell. She lived by her wits. Women were at the mercy of men at this time. They couldn't have careers. They had to rely on their family or marry into money. An interesting read.

Excellent

Good story, it wasn't a big mystery like Rebecca. But this author knows how to tell a great story. Good book.

Boring

Daphne du Maurier is my favorite author. But this book isn’t it! I had a really hard time listening to it all the way through. A story about a whore and how she cheats everyone. Not really my kind of book. Lots of drawn out chatter about pretty boring subjects. Reminds me a the book vanity fair but not as good.

Throw Back to an Earlier Time

Would you listen to Mary Anne again? Why?

Wonderful story; told in a marvelously vintage manner - vivid descriptions; well-developed characters; outstanding plot. DuMaurier is a master story-teller.

Absorbing.

Daphne Du Maurier is as compelling an author of historical fiction as she is in the mystery and horror genres. Knowing that the main character was based on the author's own ancestor adds even more interest and authenticity. I am eager to do some research into the facts of the case!

Splendidly entertaining. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Mary Anne certainly left her mark on English history. Her wit, charm, and determination are to be admired as woman who would have her indepence

Good Story, Awkward Chapters

The chapter divisions aren't truly where the chapters begin and end. The story itself was enjoyable.

Could have liked it better

The end was chaos to my mind. I couldn't get a grasp on it even listening to it three times.
