Publisher's summary

Ambrose Young was beautiful. He was tall and muscular, with hair that touched his shoulders and eyes that burned right through you. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was 13. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have...until he wasn't beautiful anymore.

Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us.

Emotional story

When I started listening to this, I realized I had already read it. I couldn't stop though and just listened again. it is so sweet and well written. Great for young readers. 13+ kissing but not sex. -Dink

I am blubbering like an idiot.

This was not my first book by Amy Harmon but it certainly is my favorite. It is so we'll written and honest. The narrator was absolutely amazing. 5 stars from start to finish.

Narration was great!

I have seen bad reviews of the female narrator. Apparently things have changed because only the man narrated the version I heard and he was great! Loved the story. So true of our times.

One of the best

This book was riveting. It made my laugh out loud, cry softly and reminded me even more about real life heroes. You won’t regret the hours spent listening and will find yourself rewinding often

Beautiful

This book was beautiful. I haven't read or listened to a book that made me feel anything like that in such a long time, if ever maybe? It really was beautiful. The narration was perfect. Normally I prefer first person, but this was so well done. I don't cry easily but between the incredible storytelling and the wonderful writing, and the touching moments, I cried.

So much more than a romance.

I would love to see this adapted. The characters are well fleshed out, the story is original and engaging, and the narrator was perfect for this selection. Tired of the same old romance? This is definitely something new.A journey in self discovery and self actualization.

Heartfelt YA coming of age

Amy Harmon sure has a way with delving deep inside the psyche and hearts of her characters. This time we have Fern and Ambrose. This is more a YA/NA coming of age book, yet, the wordmaster did it again. It was a heartfelt journey of love, heartache, and growing into our own skin and our own perception of ourselves. Told through present day and flashbacks we journey with Fern (who sees herself as an ugly duckling), Ambrose (handsome and Mr. Perfect, but humble, all-star wrestler), and Fern's cousin Bailey who has muscular dystrophy. The metaphors abound. The theme and moral, too. You know to expect some heartache but also a ending with hope. The narrator was fabulous (the same narrator, Rob Shapiro, from The First Girl Child). My only criticism was Fern and Ambrose spent a lot of time beating themselves up and it took them longer for their characters to grow. It is not an action-driven story; the set-up and pay off are clear, but rewarding nonetheless.
