Despite the turmoil, she's eager to start her magic training, especially as she's been given one year to harness her power or be put to death. But her plans take a radical turn when she becomes involved with a plot to reclaim Ixia's throne for a lost prince, and gets entangled in powerful rivalries with her fellow magicians.
If that wasn't bad enough, it appears her brother would love to see her dead. Luckily, Yelena has some old friends to help her with all her new enemies.

"Family betrayal, a power-mad serial killer, and a potential diplomatic crisis threaten the independent-minded heroine of Snyder's fine sequel to Poison Study....Snyder's lively, charming mix of romance and fantasy is sure to gain her new fans." (Publishers Weekly)
This is the second in what is a great fantasy series. Yelena is a great character. She has a lot of depth. This story follows Yelena to her family, who she was seperated from as a child. She always believed that she was an orphan, but found out in the first book of the series, Poison Study, that she was kidnapped. Yelena has a lot of trouble fitting in with her family and is a little relieved when it is time for her to leave them so that she can go study magic. Trouble brews at the magic school when magicians get kidnapped and killed. Yelena jumps in to investigate and gets herself in a lot of trouble on the way. The book has lots of action and I can't wait for the next one. A must read.
Although the story begins well, I could not listen past the first 2 chapters. It did not hold my attention. Although I typically like this genre, I found this novel (what I heard) lacking.
Did I miss something? If Xenon the warrior is your type of romance this may be the romance novel for you. I found myself laughing at the ridiculous reading and downright silly plot line. I kept hoping it would get better as the book plodded or more like trudged along in its ubsurd storyline. It never did. I really don't understand how this could possibly make a top list of anything, much less romance. So for anyone thinking of buying this book. In my best transylvanian accent I will reach for a strand of power to tell you DONT!
I listen to audiobooks when I drive and when I hike.
This book put me to sleep - I could not even begin to get through it.
I have so many wonderful books on my iPOD that it distresses me to click on one that doesn't work for me. I am an eclectic reader, but don't like books where I don't connect with the characters, find the story dull or repetitive, and worst of all, can't wait until it is finished so I can move on to the next book. This was one of those books that just did not engage me.
