Captain Christopher Phelan has been corresponding with the beautiful golden-haired Prudence Mercer while he was away fighting in the Crimean War. What he doesn't know, however, is that the woman who wrote to him is actually Prudence's best friend, Beatrix Hathaway.
Upon his return home to Hampshire, it becomes clear that Christopher's experiences in war have changed him.
Spend some more time with the Hathaways.

Loved the main character- Beatrix was quirky and interesting. And although this was the last book in the Hathaway series I listened to it first and it made me want to buy the others. Which I promptly did of course.
Beatrix- I loved her unique perspective.
Not sure- she's one of my favorite narrators, and I think she does both male and female voices pretty well.
I definitely laughed and everything in between.
I have a PhD in American Literature but my love affair with romance novels on audible is going strong.
This was my favorite of the whole series as the main character is such a charming and interesting character. Plenty of humor, surprises and drama as usual with Kleypas. Don't miss this one if you are following the series, which is best if read in order.
The last half is weak, but the first half is definitely worthwhile.
Christopher, a British soldier, had a crush on beautiful but shallow Prudence. He asked her to write to him while he fought in the Crimea. Prudence had no interest, but Beatrix did. So Beatrix wrote letters to Christopher, signing them as Prudence. Christopher fell in love with the letter writer but didn’t know it was Beatrix. This was fun with good anticipation - wondering what he will do, how will he find out. The last half was kind of typical - ordinary writing - not much done with the relationship. I was surprised it went on as long as it did after they fell in love. Prudence disappeared from the plot too quickly. The second half could have been better by giving Prudence a larger role.
A couple thoughts: I liked the way Christopher disliked Beatrix in the beginning. I liked the line “Prudence has the depth of a puddle.”
There were several sex scenes. They were ok, nothing special.
The narrator Rosalyn Landor had a lovely Julie Andrews voice for Beatrix. But I did not like her voice for men. She used a holding your breath low voice which sounded weird. It detracted from Christopher’s sexuality. Her emotional interpretation of Christopher made him less likeable. It’s probably better to read this than listen to her.
Genre: historical romance
I just Love the Allure of a Great Romance...a Pair of Rose Colored Glasses...some Fine Wine, and a Subscription to Audible...
Pairing Lisa Kleypas with Rosalyn Landor proves to be a winning combination every time! Rosalyn has a way of bringing the words and characters of LK to life, making it very difficult to put the book down. It would be impossible to pick a favorite, because each is performed to perfection with endearing personalities.I love the Hathaway family. They are quirky, and funny - loving love eachother with unconditional acceptance and loyalty.Begin with the first book in the series...you will love them all !
As with the other books in this series, there's an interesting heroine and a potentially very interesting plot. But, the author seems to think readers need a sex manual (quite idealized!) rather than a novel.
Ms. Kleypas is a very good writer but I think she has caved in to whatever the romance writer gods are saying will sell. I think it would have still been a fun, sexy book with more plot in it.
This is a great conclusion to the "Hathaways" series. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy Beatrix's story, but I really did. The romance was genuine and sweet, and as always, I found myself laughing at the interactions of the Hathaways with each other. What a fun family! The narration was also excellent, Ms. Landor's narrations are always done very well. I highly recommend this book, along with the previous book in the series, "Married by Morning".
Great story and great narrator. Lisa Kleypas' Hathaway series is a great read and so is her Wallflower series. I would highly recommend her works.

Any book narrated by Rosalyn Landor is HIGHLY recommended. She gives life to all those characters.
A brilliantly written series of the Hathaways (Book 5) You just have to read them all. The voice of
Rosalyn Landor is so perfect, you get lost in the thrill of it all. Every book is so different that it shows the writers knowledge of just how to write a book. Couldn't put it down!
Though I did not find letters written between Captain Christopher Phelan and Beatrix worthy of creating such a strong attachment, it is nice to read a story where the hero's feelings of love is based on merit and not looks. At least this is true for the captain. Beatrix’s love seemed to be mostly based on looks and therefore shallow since all she had experienced with him was his rudeness and contempt throughout their entire acquaintance. I found this book an ok end to the Hathaway series.
