Publisher's summary

After enduring years of her nobleman father's cruelty and abuse, Celestina Lunde is ready to take her own life rather than enter into an arranged marriage with an equally brutal man. But just when she is about to leap through the window of her tower bedroom, a brawny Highland warrior arrives at her home and changes everything.

Summoned to the royal castle by the King of the Scots, who is preparing for war with the Norse, Brodie Grant's mind is on battle when he first spies the breathtaking Celestina perched on a window ledge. The sadness in her eyes makes him turn his horse around against his laird's orders. He intends only to save the lovely lass, but after touching her once, he can think of nothing and no one else.

There's just one problem: Celestina's intended is an important man, and the king has just as much at stake in her arranged marriage as her father does. Will Brodie be able to do as he's ordered and stay away?

Ok

This is ok I like Anthony ferguson. He is not really good with female voices. Would be better if they would have used dual narrators.

Excessive unhappiness and violence.

I skipped Book 2 because I couldn't remember if I had read it or not, but I did read Book 1 in this series. This book along with Book 1 has a bit too much violence towards women for my taste in a romance. I commend the author for trying to show women overcoming a traumatic past, but the beatings (or whipping which were in Book 1), are somewhat too graphic. I thought that maybe Book 1 was a one-off story of a woman recovering from abuse, but this was much the same. Little of this was sexualized violence towards women, unlike Book 1, but if you have a history of trauma avoid reading this.

The other problem that I had was the imbalance in amount of the book that was spent on a happy relationship developing versus surviving violence. More than half of the book is spent on this women trying to escape violence. (Perhaps this is accurate for women in abusive relationships, but not really the making of a wonderful romance.) The romance was entirely secondary to the coping with violence. If I was looking for a memoir of abuse, but not really the makings of an escapist Highland Romance.

There were two positives that I greatly appreciated from the author: 1) The character of Loki. He's darling and a wonderful addition to the storyline. In fact, his story is what kept me going through the story. I love romances with feisty and adorable children as secondary characters. 2) An introduction to Alexander III and the Battler of Largs with Norway, which is the 13th century about 25-30 years before the story of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. So many Highland Romance writers focus on 1290 to 1330 (or the the 11th-12th century), so the novel did allow me to get out my historical references and read about the conflict between Scotland and Norway. I found this quite interesting because most of my understand of the "Viking Era" was that it ended around the time of William the Conquerer, and didn't know about the conflict regarding the Western Isles. I do appreciate the author taking the time to create a story about this time period with appropriate historical accuracy.

I generally like Antony Ferguson as an narrator. He's a decent narrator, but lacks some of the range of some other narrators-- all of the women sound the same. However, the Highland warrior voices are excellent.

Seriously?

She's been imprisoned in a tower by her father for most of her life. Yes, she can read, and is book smart. However, to me, its like she's 12 years old. Another broken person in this series. They fell in love, and (not spoling) after spending ten minutes together, and profess how deep their love is? Boring...but I had to finish it since I started it. I hope you're not looking for steamy.
***Incoming Spoiler Rant***
Her mother? Father? Sorry, can't forgive them, too selfish. It's like, Hey, I have an idea. We'll let our daughter suffer years and years of emotional and physical abuse while we live together, have more children...and we'll pretend we're dead. We'll keep tabs on her by sending someone to help her...but not actually help her. So, we'll be happy together, but feel a little guilty...Meh. She'll be fine.

Good story but...

I enjoy the story but i don’t enjoy the abuse heaped on women. I just can’t listen to the beatings. I won’t be downloading anymore Keira Montgomery. Like Anthony Ferguson’s voice. Low stars given for abuse.

Brodie just will not listen......

Brodie is answering a summons to the King when he sees a young lady he thinks is going to jump from a castle window.

When he finds out she is under abuse from her father, he just can't get her out of his mind. The king says no, he can't help her, of course, Clan Grant hardheaded highlanders just don't listen.

Will Celestina be rescued or will she go to an equally abusive husband??

Great addition to the series!

Antony Ferguson does a great job narrating the story.

Love letters from Largs is another great read!

I love following the story of the Grant family as they live, love and fight their way through their highlander way of life that I love reading about and admire. Ms. Montclair is a wonderful weaver of Scottish historic romance into a great family of interesting characters that stand on their on and together as a strong loving family.
