This book is marvelous. Simply and utterly brilliant. So brilliant it took my breath away. The fantasy world CL Wilson creates is vivid and real, without the monotony of boring details. Somehow, it just seems to flow from the story and form in your mind. The main characters are so well developed you feel what they feel. It is romantic fantasy, but very well balanced. Lovers of either genre should be pleased with this book. The only drawback to the story itself is that while this book can stand alone, it doesn't do so comfortably. You will finish wanting more, and more is not (yet) available on Audible, which is a pity.
The narration by Stephanie Reggio starts out a bit shaky. There are points when you can hear her breath, and she does miss some punctuation. These problems do seem to iron themselves out for the most part the further into the book you get. Her handling of emotional scenes, and her building of tension in dramatic scenes is very good.
I would highly recommend this book. It's one of those rare books that I will remember for years to come. While there are some small problems in the narrators delivery, I can't do anything other than give this book 5 stars. The story is just that good.
Love Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Romance books.
I hate to admit it, but this one sat in my library for weeks before I finally got around to listening to it. For some reason I was not convinced by the good reviews. Well I was wrong...and I am happy I was. This was an excellent book, great story, great characters, detailed world building. I have since gone on to listen to the rest of the books in the series. I highly recommend...
Always on the prowl for a good story...
I was wondering through Audible looking for something different, and somehow stumbled upon this wonderful series. The story itself is fresh and intriguing and the characters exciting. I was really impressed with C.L. Wilson's world, and wish there were more to come. The series was one of those rare treats that leave you wondering about the characters and their fates long after you've turned off audible.
In the first novel, we are introduced to Elly and Rain, and more of Rain's back story is revealed in this first novel than Elly's. The supporting cast of Elly's family and Rain's friends are polarizing, endearing, and frustrating - just like real people! I find that the mark of a great author. HOWEVER - the narrator of the first book made me want to just turn it off sometimes. The narrator gave Elly a nasally, whining tone that did not fit with the storyline at all. In fact, with few exceptions, almost all the female characters were given the whine treatment. It really is no wonder they switched narrators after this one. The first book should be redone, without a doubt. BUT - the story is so consuming that the narration does not distract from it for the duration of the novel. The series really needs to be started at book one, so be patient with the narration of this first novel - it is well worth it!!!
I had not heard of this series but and extremely grateful that I bought this book. It has fantasy and romance in an excellent balance between the two. I hope audible gets the other books in the series! If you are a Jeanine Frost or Kenyan fan you will love this book!
Home is where my books are.
If you're looking for a romantic story with fey and magic, look no further. There is a reason this author has such a strong following. Her world is original and fascinating, and I enjoyed my visit so much I'm on to book 2.
CON: The reader was a little rough, particularly in the descriptive passages.
PRO: Her voices for the characters are great, so you overlook the other stuff pretty quickly.
The book does end pretty abruptly, so you're sort of on the hook for book 2, but I doubt you'll mind. From what I've read, books 1 and 2 were meant to be one whole book, so that accounts for the weirdness.
I don't know what Stephanie Riggio was thinking. She has such a beautiful voice, but ms. Riggio completely destroyed Elly's character in my opinion. I wanted to turn off the audio and get ebook instead. I understand that Elly is very young girl, but Ms Riggio made her absolutely winy and very dis-likable. Elly is supposed to be a shining star and adorable...
I enjoyed the story very much and looking forward to listening to sequels with a different narrator.
I really liked this book and will move on to others in the series. It has all the elements of great fantasy - interesting mythology, original world-building and characters with depth. At the same time, this is a deeply romantic story and probably will appeal to woman more than men, but there is plenty of action and adventure as well. A great 'good versus evil' story that will leave the reader wanting more. This is clearly not the end and the book feels unfinished. My only complaint, and it is minor, is that some of this story-line moves a little slowly, but I think it probably lays the foundation for what is to come. Definitely worth a credit!
Red hat reader
I loved this series when I read it, now, I'm in love with listening to it. Stephanie Riggio had done a wonderful job.
The Hero and Heroine are to die for. All other supporting charaters are also great. The world and people C.L Wilson created is magic! The Romance is epic. One of my most favorite series ever. A story/series you would want to read or listen to over and over. I have!
After having already read the book, I thought it would be difficult for someone to narrate it and still know who is speaking amognst all the different ways they communicated in the book. Alas, I was happily proven to be wrong. The narrator is very good. Wonderful voice!
the book was good enough for me to now read book 2 and will probably finish the series because of the lack of good sci fi/romance authors out there. its not as passionate as dragon bound by thea harrison but still entertaining.
If I wanted a love story laced with sex I would have gone to the romance section. I was thoroughly disappointed with this story as nothing really happened except the building sexual tension between the two main protagonists. I will not be listening to the remainder of the series. Very very disappointing.
"Captivating love story & great fantasy setting"
This book reads like a fairytale, a grown up Cinderella story. Carpenter's daughter Ellysetta is on the verge of being trapped into a marriage with hideous butcher's son, when something unbelievable happens. The infamous and powerful Rain Tairen Soul arrives and claims she is his shei'tani, his true mate.
Rain Tairen Soul is the Lord of the Fading Lands and a Fey warrior. His people have never recovered from a terrible war with the Dark Mages over a thousand years ago and it has been centuries since a new Fey child has been born. Worried about the survival of his race, he is desperately seeking for a solution. He never expected to find his true mate. In fact, Rain is a Tairen, and the Tairen do not have true mates. So her discovery is unbelievable, but at the same time undeniable.
The romance in this book is absolutely tender and captivating. Ellie's vulnerability and naivety perfectly offsets Rain's darkness and power, whilst at the same time complementing one another. I adored the rags to riches element of the story. Poor, common Ellie stealing the heart of the King of the Fey.
As the first in the series the novel is setting up the story for later books. The burgeoning blackness, the rise of the Mages once again and a poignant discovery about Ellie's parentage.
The narrator of the audiobook was very good, however, the production itself seemed to be very poorly edited. The switches between narrative phrases were too short, there were jumps in the story without pause which messed up the rhythm of the audiobook. Then you would have long gaps and you'd think it was a break and then dialogue between characters would continue. Which got quite irritating.
As much as I loved this book, I did have a few issues with the progression in Elie and Rain's relationship, but it's hard to explain without giving too much away. However, the romance of this book totally swept me away. I really cannot wait to read (listen) to the next instalment in Ellie and Rain's love story.
