"Series Keeps Getting Better & Better"

This is such a wonderful series!. This book highlighted the romance between Boyd and Claire with the backdrop of alcoholism and spousal abuse. As with the other books, the author beautifully featured family honor, loyalty, integrity and wit along with a well written engaging story. It is delightfully sweet, romantic, and the ending was perfect! All the characters have great personalities......even the charming "Sailor" the dog! Also, the narrator does a great job with this series too.

Such a delight!! If you love sweet, romantic, chivalrous stories with wit then don't miss out on this one!

"Love Can Heal Hurting and Broken Lives"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book is well written and is a great addition to the continuing saga of the Grayson Brother's books. The characters were well thought out and believable. I was moved to both smiles and tears. The imagery enticed me to get into the story. I would definitely recommend to a friend.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Boyd is my favourite character as he embodies the characteristics of a perceptive, concerned person gently and courteously making his way into the friendship and ultimately love for the bruised and fearful Claire. His thoughtfulness and support of her was endearing.

    Which scene was your favorite?

There were so many touching and emotional scenes that it is difficult to choose one above all else. However, when Claire revealed the existence of her grandmother's Journal and then the reading of it by the clandestine lover and his reaction, my heart overflowed for a love so strong and selfless, spanning decades.

    Any additional comments?

This is a great read, it keeps you enthralled and it flows smoothly along. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys historical romance. You never quite know what is coming next. The Grayson family saga is a wonderful mix of love, hope, devotion, friends, that embraces the family traditions of honour and caring for others who are hurting.
Claire and Boyd both have pre-conceived notions of what they think their lives should be, until they meet each other. Both have their reasons for the paths they have chosen. Antagonism to begin with and the sparks fly and what starts out with friendship turns to a longing to be more and a love that cannot be denied.
Can't wait to read the next episode/book in this marvelous series.

    "An enjoyable listen."

This is an enjoyable series, albeit not quite on par with some of the others I've listened to recently. While I enjoyed hearing Boyd's story I found the subject matter, or at least the way it was handled, to be a little too 'modern day' to fit the historical context. The book works as part of the series but I'm not sure I'd have bothered with it as a stand alone.

    Story
    "Historical romance with contemporary romance"

    The setup
Claire Ashier runs a respectable boarding house located near Boyd Grayson's saloon. She's a widow trying to support herself but can't keep boarders because of the noise from her business neighbor disturbing her customers late into the night. She wants to shut down the saloon. Boyd is sympathetic and taken by the lovely Mrs. Ashier but has no plans to close down his thriving business.

    The issues
There's so much more going on here than a noisy saloon. Claire's deceased husband was an alcoholic and an abuser. When a group of women from the church begin talk of a temperance movement, Claire's enrolled into leading the effort. When the campaign strengthens, she's threatened and Boyd takes steps to ensure her safety. As they grow closer, they are at an impasse on how to move forward with a relationship while Claire associates alcohol with spousal abuse and marriage as a loss of independence.

    What I enjoyed
There were so many layers to this story. What starts out as a simple issue regarding the noisy saloon evolves into situations regarding spousal abuse, the inequities between men and women's rights, alcoholism and family secrets. These subplots were seamlessly interwoven, making this a rich reading experience. Claire and Boyd's romance was complicated by her past and her baggage from her marriage. While there were moments where her stubbornness was irritating, it was true to her nature and the story. Boyd has his own issues, despite his affable and charming outward nature, and they have a place in this conflict.

    The bottom line
I don't often find meaty and tough issues in historical romances that have contemporary relevance. This story offered so much more than the traditional romance and it was very well presented without burdening the love story. The narration continues to be subtle and understated, not overpowering a riveting story. Each book in this series seems to best the last so I'm excited about starting the next one. The Grayson brothers keep surprising me.

(I received an ARC from the author)

"This Series is Enjoyable-But Book is Repetitious"
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

A bit more editing...I feel like many authors think their readers dense and need to remind us every few minutes about the characters circumstances. Wendy Lindstrom seems to have fallen into this habit in this book.

Give your readers a bit of credit, we are pretty sharp and can remember the reasons why the heroine and hero are in their situation. Edit a half an hour or so of the 'reminders'...your readers will appreciate it and it won't take away from an otherwise good story.

Claire's preaching got tedious, but that may have been the repetition - again.

What three words best describe Julia Motyka’s performance?

    Solid, rich & steady

    Any additional comments?

I may have been a bit tough in my review but I HATE the feeling that the author is writing to a word count instead of just telling the story. This is a solid book* and I'll listen again.

*I'm listening to the next in the series and the 'magic' of the first book is back!
