Publisher's summary

A captivating romance from the New York Times best-selling author of Remembrance.

Deveraux transports us from modern-day Virginia to the high mountain deserts of 1873 Colorado, with a vibrant new tale about a feisty lady and the man she was meant to love.

Petite Kady Long, a celebrated chef about to be married to a gorgeous man, felt she was the luckiest woman alive. But when she tried on an antique satin wedding dress, she was overcome with dizziness.

When she opened her eyes, Kady was in the harsh, sunlit landscape of 1873 Legend, Colorado. There, she meets Cole Jordan, a tall, rangy, and very appealing man. But while Kady is anxious to return to her time, Cole has other ideas...i deas that could give him and the inhabitants of Legend what they so desperately need - a future.

CAGA-UK

This is the first time I have been compelled to write a review because I loved this audio book so much. It was funny, romantic and sad and it left me completely drained. I listened to it virtually non-stop because I had to know the ending. This is the first, but not the last, Jude Deveraux book iv'e listened to and I'm looking forward to listening to many more. I have eclectic taste in books, from Christine Feehan, Christina Dodd, Brenda Joyce, Megan Hart, Nora Roberts,Kerrelyn Sparks and Johanna Lindsey.

In my opinion, this book is well worth the credit.

AWFUL!!

I have always enjoyed Jude Deveraux stories, however, the narrator of this book is terrible. She has ruined the story and makes it unbearable to listen to. : (

Great Story, Awful Narrator

First, I should say that I have read a lot of Jude Deveraux's works and really like her period pieces. The first time I read this book was maybe about 20 years ago within a couple years of when the book first came out. However, I hadn't reread it. Recently, I decided to listen to it because I remembered enjoying the book a lot the first time. Once again I enjoyed the story line and liked the use of time travel. Though on the second reading, I thought the ending was a little rushed compared to the rest of the book.

My issue is with the narrator. Note that I have listened to 100s of audiobooks and I am fairly tolerant of bad narration that bothers other people; however, she was so god awful slow and had these weird pauses which made it very distracting and detracted from the story. When I first started listening it was so bad that I almost stopped listening. I then remembered that you can listen to the story at 1.25 times the speed. I HIGHLY recommend doing this. I think the speed is slightly too fast (I wish they had a 1.15 times the speed option), but you get used to it and it's MUCH better than the painfully slow narration speed. It also helps with the strange pauses where you think something happened with the app. I also didn't think there was a lot of variety in the characters voices, but this wasn't an overall huge problem. Another thins is that I felt like the narrator's voice made the main characters sound older than their ages. Without knowing the age of the narrator, I would guess that she is an older woman, and it was distracting enough that it would pull me out of the story.

TL:DR If you want to enjoy the story, set the audible app to 1.25x the speed to deal with a painfully slow narrator.

Legend

This is the second Jude Deveraux book I have purchased on Audio. Did not enjoy this one compared to Days of Gold. Quality of the download was poor, first time I have ever gotten background noice on the audio. I have a libray of over 20 books and do not have this issue with any other book. Was distracted by the narrator of the book and I felt it took a long time to develop the story.

It was okay.

I have this in hardcover -- I bought it and read it when it first came out. I loved the story just as much as then, but wasn't thrilled with the narrator. I envisioned 30 year old Katie with a younger, perkier, more innocent sounding voice. While C.J. Critt does a great job, her voice just sounds far too old and too refined, like some glamorous movie star from the 40s or something. It just didn't fit the character. Therefore, I didn't like the audio as much.

Not worth the read or the listen.

Would you try another book from Jude Deveraux and/or C. J. Critt?

Not likely

Has Legend turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

Would you be willing to try another one of C. J. Critt’s performances?

NO

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Legend?

Most of them.

Any additional comments?

The story is juvenile, not true to the periods (clash of language and slang). The dialog is just plain stupid. The story drags on and on and really didn't make me want to rush to my car to listen every commute. The performance is weak. The narrator doesn't have a good command of male vs. female voices and Cole sounded like a light footed, limp wristed wimp.

I do not recommend this book!

Even though Jude Devereaux is one of my favorites.... and I love this book. I have read it many times, the narrator ruined it for me. Her voice didn't fit. I felt like someone was reading to me with expression.

A bit of a disappointment!

I am a big Jude Deveraux fan and I have to say this book was a total disappointment! The main character was so boring and repetitive and totally fake! Several times I wondered if this was really a Jude Deveraux book.

Love the book…TERRIBLE choice of narrator!

Legend is one of my favorite Jude Deveraux books, I’ve read it many times. I thought it would be a great option for an audible book. To listen while I’m driving, working, etc., I was wrong. I just can’t get past the narrator, her voice doesn’t fit the character or style. The worst in my opinion is the awkward cadence, style to her narrative. I’ve started and stopped this reading multiple times and just can’t get past it, regardless of the speed I set it to. So very disappointing!
