Lady Sophia Sydney would do anything to ensnare the unattainable Sir Ross Cannon. Her goal - to ruin his reputation and cause a scandal that would be the talk of all London. So she insinuates herself into his life by gaining his trust and living in his house.Every morning, her lush presence tempts him beyond all reason... the way she bends over the table to serve him the meals she has prepared...the way her hands oh, so gently - yet sensuously - brush against him. Every night, she promises with her eyes - and her body - that the hours before dawn could be spent in unbridled passion instead of restless sleep - if only he’d let her share his bed.
She knows he is falling more in love with her each day. But she never counted on falling in love with him. And she never dreamed he might very respectably ask for her hand in marriage...

I hear a lot about any a Kleypas' other novels. And while I'm not usually a huge romance fan, I have been reading many books in the genre. I liked Karen Moning and Jeaniene Frost type books.
I have a soft spot for historical romance, that developed as teenager. I read the Knight in Shining Armor, by Jude Deveraux. If memory serves right, I read and reread it and cried, etc.
Anyway, I found a few historical romance novels I really liked. Lisa Kleypas writes in a way that I really respond to. I've liked all of her books that I've read, but this is easily my favorite.
I think the name makes it seem more smutty than it is.
I love this book and will read again. Narrator, as usual, rocks!!
I am a lover of books. I enjoy losing myself in a fabulous romance and great story plot.
Oh how I love this book! This is an all time “Lisa Kleypas Classic” for me. I like to revisit this book every once in a while when I feel like listening to a great romance. I also love that the story centers around the chief magistrate of Bow Street and the historical snapshot that is captured in that world of crime fighters.
The love story between Sir Ross Canon and Lady Sophia Sydney is written in a manner that weaves you in with a curiosity and a desire to learn more about how their romance will unfold. I thought I was refreshing how both Sir Ross and Lady Sophia are mature, older adults (well for a regency novel that is!..lol) I believe Lady Sophia is in her late 20’s and Sir Ross in his mid to late 30’s.
Sir Ross is so freaken appealing because he is unattainable. As a widower, he has not sought to fill the vacuum in his heart and no one has come close to making him want to, until Lady Sophia strolls into his office interviewing for the position of his assistant. In modern times, this would be a lofty endeavor, but in 1830’s London, it’s completely unheard of! Good for Sophia! She is beautiful, intelligent, educated, resourceful good in the kitchen as well as in the office…I mean the woman is undeniably fabulous! So why wouldn’t she be the one to capture Sir Ross’s attention and heart! The impending challenge is that she wants to capture his heart only to break it, as she lays the responsibility of the death of her brother at his feet.
Sir Ross’s appeal is undeniable. His sex appeal just flows off of the pages…he is powerful as the chief magistrate, and a fair, and just man who lives by an oath of unyielding morality. I think this is one of the reasons so many women were after him. Who wouldn’t want to be the object of attention from such an intense, dedicated man. Although Sophia thought the worst of him, this hate began to melt away as she worked day in and out next to the man who she was destined to love.
I love all of the slack that Sir Ross received from those in the office & from the bow street runners for hiring Sophia. I loved how Sir Ross always treated Sophia with respect, interest and was just flame-torch hot with her once they began to give in to their attraction.
This book is an absolute dream for the romance reader because it follows Sir Ross & Sophia’s love affair from acquaintances, to lovers, to marriage partners. Through every step of the way this romance is luscious, intimate and so dam good!
The narrator, Susan Duerdon, was wonderful. I love her work……she created a deep, masculine voice for the hero and a sweet, feminine one for the heroine.
I will always revisit “Lady Sophia’s Lover.”
This is the first of a 2-part series, and I recommend reading this one first. It's a delightful read with LK at her best. Once again I almost didn't read it because the description sounded silly. It's a good thing we have readers' reviews to guide us. Duerden is not my favorite narrator but she's fine in this one.
Audible addicted love mystery, lately stuck on love story. Mother of 1 Labrador and 1 perfect man. Work way too hard, and so ready to be retired
Very enjoyable listen, Susan is a most excellent narrator she was the reason, I tried this one. Did not disappoint.
Lisa Kleypas is a talented writer and I very much enjoy her books, including this one. The heroine, Sophia, occasionally got on my nerves--too much hand wringing. But overall a fun read.
Ms. Duerden's narration was marvelous. She did a suberb job on all the characters, but her rendition of Sir Ross was exquisite.
I am quiet and love being comfortable. I love curling up in a corner either reading or listening to a nice romantic book.
I loved this book, it was the perfect fairytale with a great ending. I just wished I had read this book before the follow on. This was a little different than most of Lisa's books but none the same a good read with a good storyline.
Tell us about yourself!
Senuous, Captivating, Unpredictable.
Fast-paced, with many unexpected twists in the plot. Loved the main charcters, as well as the minor characters which keeps the reader engaged throughout.
Ross probably. However Sophia is also a great character, which is why the book is so great. Both of them are fascinating and likeable, so as a couple they are great! Also, Klepass knows how to stretch out the sexual tension, without being crude. Susan Dueden is great at the narrration, and adds much to the sexual tension.

Say something about yourself!
Good story. Terrific narrator. Definitely worth the listen. I recommend it. Lisa Kleypas and Susan Duerden made a good combination on this one. Made me look for this pairing in other books.
Audio-fiction ADDICT !
I always enjoy Lisa's books. But this was not as captivating as her other books . I find this series a bit ordinary. It does not compare to the Hathaway series or the wallflower series. And what's disappointing that the first book in this series , which is to me the most interesting of the series, is not out in audio!
It lacks the WOW factor !
But the narration was really good. I enjoy Susan Duerden's performance always
To be honest. This book didn't contain memorable scenes !
This story is about a woman who goes to London to take revenge on the man she believes is responsible for her brother's death. After she gets a job as his assistant, which was very scandalous indeed, in the hope of discovering something about him that could lead him to his ruin, she begins her plot to have him fall in love with her. In the process of trying to get HIM to fall in love with her, she falls in love with him. He is, of course, from a wealthy family, handsome and very honest and ethical and she is beautiful, smart and a "lady" or an earl's daughter.
I actually read the second book first a while back and have read many books since so I did not recall the story at all. Since I did not want to ruin the first book, I decided not to go back to reaquaint myself with the specifics. I actually managed to guess what was going to happen in the story based on logic. A bit too predictable at times but overall I still enjoyed the book.
