Lady Sophia Sydney would do anything to ensnare the unattainable Sir Ross Cannon. Her goal - to ruin his reputation and cause a scandal that would be the talk of all London. So she insinuates herself into his life by gaining his trust and living in his house.Every morning, her lush presence tempts him beyond all reason... the way she bends over the table to serve him the meals she has prepared...the way her hands oh, so gently - yet sensuously - brush against him. Every night, she promises with her eyes - and her body - that the hours before dawn could be spent in unbridled passion instead of restless sleep - if only he’d let her share his bed.
She knows he is falling more in love with her each day. But she never counted on falling in love with him. And she never dreamed he might very respectably ask for her hand in marriage...

Lisa Kleypas is a talented writer and I very much enjoy her books, including this one. The heroine, Sophia, occasionally got on my nerves--too much hand wringing. But overall a fun read.
Ms. Duerden's narration was marvelous. She did a suberb job on all the characters, but her rendition of Sir Ross was exquisite.
Tell us about yourself!
Senuous, Captivating, Unpredictable.
Fast-paced, with many unexpected twists in the plot. Loved the main charcters, as well as the minor characters which keeps the reader engaged throughout.
Ross probably. However Sophia is also a great character, which is why the book is so great. Both of them are fascinating and likeable, so as a couple they are great! Also, Klepass knows how to stretch out the sexual tension, without being crude. Susan Dueden is great at the narrration, and adds much to the sexual tension.
This story and
Audible addicted love mystery, lately stuck on love story. Mother of 1 Labrador and 1 perfect man. Work way too hard, and so ready to be retired
Very enjoyable listen, Susan is a most excellent narrator she was the reason, I tried this one. Did not disappoint.
Which came first... the books or the glasses?
Good story. Terrific narrator. Definitely worth the listen. I recommend it. Lisa Kleypas and Susan Duerden made a good combination on this one. Made me look for this pairing in other books.
I had a hard time finishing this. Books with 350 pages or more just seem to amble on and on, saying nothing or the same thing over and over again. You could have taken 150 pages from this book, or any other book with this many pages, and it would have been a good book. The filler in these books is getting ridiculous.
Sooo, Sophie wants revenge. She gets hired as the Chief Magistrate’s assistant and the revenge begins. Unfortunately, she falls in love with him and he with her. He proposes and she says no to marriage but she’ll be his mistress. Really? The author made Sophia’s thought process kinda’ stupid. I really did liked Ross, the hero. He was kind and patient and an all-around wonderful guy. And as bad as Nick Gentry was supposed to be you could see a little niceness underneath.
As much as I like sex in my books that’s where most of the filler came from. Page after page after page of sex. I wish I would have counted the number of pages because it was kind of crazy. IMO it would have been much better with a mention of sexual tension most of the time instead of all that sex. Anyway, this is my 3rd book by this author and the last one. Too much filler for me and not enough meat of the story.
As to the narrator: I always enjoy Susan Duerden. She's just a really good narrator, whether she's laughing, crying, whispering, yelling, whatever, she does it all.
Love this book, huge fan of her historical books. Have read it several times but this was the first time listening to it. Still one of my favorites :)
Geez this story was wordy. 384 pages I would have rather it have been about 84 pages shorter. I felt like the book was never going to end! The story was okay. I have read better. I did like the Hero, Ross, he was a very likable hero. The heroine, Sophie was good too, a pretty strong female character not, a simpering crybaby.
The chemistry they had together was good, and the sex scenes were nicely written.
There is lots of dialogue throughout the entire book and I really like lots of dialogue in my stories, so there is that.
I did figure out who Nick Gentry was right away, not a surprise there.
As for the narration, I am becoming a great fan of Susan Duerden lately, she reads with such emotion, whispers, shouts, yells, and mumbles as the story calls for it. The men sound like sexy men and the women have very nice voices as well. She tends to give all the characters their own distinct voice that is separate from her reading voice. Most excellent narrator!
I have a PhD in American Literature but my love affair with romance novels on audible is going strong.
This is the first of a 2-part series, and I recommend reading this one first. It's a delightful read with LK at her best. Once again I almost didn't read it because the description sounded silly. It's a good thing we have readers' reviews to guide us. Duerden is not my favorite narrator but she's fine in this one.
This story is about a woman who goes to London to take revenge on the man she believes is responsible for her brother's death. After she gets a job as his assistant, which was very scandalous indeed, in the hope of discovering something about him that could lead him to his ruin, she begins her plot to have him fall in love with her. In the process of trying to get HIM to fall in love with her, she falls in love with him. He is, of course, from a wealthy family, handsome and very honest and ethical and she is beautiful, smart and a "lady" or an earl's daughter.
I actually read the second book first a while back and have read many books since so I did not recall the story at all. Since I did not want to ruin the first book, I decided not to go back to reaquaint myself with the specifics. I actually managed to guess what was going to happen in the story based on logic. A bit too predictable at times but overall I still enjoyed the book.
I am quiet and love being comfortable. I love curling up in a corner either reading or listening to a nice romantic book.
I loved this book, it was the perfect fairytale with a great ending. I just wished I had read this book before the follow on. This was a little different than most of Lisa's books but none the same a good read with a good storyline.
